For me the whole jam (Sample>Moma Dance>Free) rivals only the 7/23/99 Ghost>Free>BOAF jam. At least as far as jams with Free in the middle go. they're tied for me
Oh, boy. This show was a wild night on Coney Island. I feel like this show and Coventry were the bookends of so much. Even after many nights of loving up on this band from being a student in 1994 @ the Syracuse War Memorial for my first show. The four of them continue to create magic. This Free was a trance. They can talk to each other musically at will. See you this summer!
Man this is the Phish I miss and Love! Where to begin on this legendary version! How tight Mike and Fish are at 5:07 The look Trey gives Fish at 5:55 realizing Mike didn't take the bait and instead wanted to continue the jam. Treys phrasing at 7:00 The moment Gordon knew this was a monster, just feeling it so hard he stomps into the ground at 8:05 The smile trey gives Mike at 8:12 almost thanking Mike for continuing the jam. Mikes face at 10:12 and Treys face at 10:15 I knew deep down that they had to stop, it was evident that it was getting out of control, but there were moments in 2003 & 2004 looking back now where if you were there, you were lucky enough to witness some of the all time moments in Phishtory.
Nice observation. I have seen them over 60 times, and from what I remember, he is always smiling. My take is that he truly is living the dream and playing music to one of the most devoted followings any band would dream of having. I truly feel he loves the fans as much as we love him.
i once heard of this type of event back in the day.a large group of people gathered tightly together in an auditorium or stadium to witness an extraordinary band play.. i heard that it was an experience to remember forever.
This and Moma Dance from this show are incredible. Love that part near 7:25 where Mike hits a pedal to get that wet reverb with Trey switching right after him starting with that bent note.
Just posted an in-depth analysis of this jam on my channel, as well as note for note guitar tab on Trey's solo at 6:40. I think a lot of you guys would dig it!
I remember the rain. When I entered the stadium, I went right for the few seats that were under cover. While most fans got soaked I was completely dry!
The Goosebumps at 7:02 are lethal. Bopping in my chair at work as if i have a rash on my ass. Must look strange. But when ya gotta groove, ya gotta groove.
I feel like I am skydiving right now. Chills head to toe. Goosebumps. I love you if you're reading this phamily. Keep it pounding. Now let's go save the world.
jason smith acually, superb version mike lays it down, beautiful finish by trey,my favorite of this show is the 46 days, even over the stellar version of free, moma, possum, suzy ,great show! haven't stop jammin it since it was recorded!
They played this in Wrigley first set and i was crying... 2nd set i called the dwd opener which i know is a easy call... but i thought i was on top of the world having a great show then it dropped into fuego and i got so freaked out i had to almost leave the show things got very evil and dark for me that night in wrigly... still dont understand how it went from so good to so bad... fuego is a nogo for me... if a setlist has fuego 2nd song 2nd set i wont allow myself to open up to the beauty of phish for that set........i get overwhelmed with the power they weild...but i grew up on phish so im trying to hang im there and work threw my shawdow... maybe ill just stay away from the baseball field shows...
This version ruined me be I have never found a moment when the bassist and guitarist are left to their own devices. If anyone can give me references to other songs like this I will gladly thank you.
Why is this the only live in Brooklyn video on you tube? I want 46 days dammit! I lost my dvd! Ok there are others, but no 46 days! - melts like a snowflake -
I believe it was Eric Clapton who first referred to "being in the pocket". Yeah phish exemplifies what it means to be in the pocket. Each and everyone of them
I was seeing if I'm among like minded kinderds; 41 year old hippie 2.0 born in the 70's to hippies and old enough to have had my fun in the 90's grung, alt,new age, phish the other hippie bands and a bunch of 1 hitters bands and
This period of time in Phish's life was wrought with strife and a darkness which fueled the music. It also made it horrifically terrible. Some of the stuff played on this tour is embarrassing, but some of it is the best stuff they've ever played, like the 6/19/04 Piper, the 6/20/04 Drowned, the 6/23/04 Crosseyed -> Slave, the 8/10/04 ACDC Bag. But then you have the 6/23/04 46 Days, etc. Let's not even begin to count the Coventry butcheries. But that stuff is beautifully broken. Today, the band is comfortable and often times can still power through some great jams, but there isn't a darkness fueling the fire underneath them. The band was dying, here. It's poignant. It's art. You still have great things like the 7/8/12 Piper, the Magnaball Caspian, 11/1/13 Twist, every Fall '13 Golden Age and Tweezer....
It's a mindset. It hits you when it does. It's up to you to grab it. I've been to shows (not just Phish) and didn't even hear what was straight up presented to me on a silver platter! Later on I'd hear and think what the fuck was my problem. Why didn't I hear it? in that moment, in that time? And I'm blown away yyyyy
Was listening to this on the walk to class and struggling not to dance. Eventually I just had to to surrender to the flow
You always have to surrender to the flow. I learned this with a head full of portabellas at Alpine Sunday night during Ruby Waves.
Don't fight the feeling sister
Let it roll right from the soul.
Peace
How do u keep from moving on this jam??!!
Most definitely!!!!!!!! Everytime I listen I keep that constant head bob going. I see why Mike is always bouncing his head lol. Impossible not to !!!!
I always come back when constipated and mikes bass makes it flow free
Perhaps the best 10 minutes of recorded music ever made!
really...were just weightless in the room?
@@grizzlyitch1662 Amen brother

The song that made me fall in love with phish. M Gordon is an absolute monster 👹

Here I thought I lost that '70's vibe forever!
I'm back again at this Free. Its such a go-to!
I've listened to this soooo many times!!
Best version of Free Ive heard especially Mike's swampy bass and the buildup at the end
For me the whole jam (Sample>Moma Dance>Free) rivals only the 7/23/99 Ghost>Free>BOAF jam. At least as far as jams with Free in the middle go. they're tied for me
By far this phish's best version of this song........so clean and crisp and sum funk !!
some flubs in the opening section. spectacular interplay in the jam. top 5
I prefer the studio version
I would have to say yes to that !!!!
@@bobcoleman9045 I was referring to their live shows & this song .
they just played a tasty version in mexico last night too
Greatest mike gordon performance ever! Everybody else feeds off of him!!!
So locked in. Love when they nail the chord change right before that last chorus.
Best part, and when trey continues to shred between lines of the last chorus
@@samh729 totally. So sick
Trey's solo around 6min in is so good...groovin. he's feeling it!
The communication between Mike and Trey on that one was just magical. Such a joy to be able to watch one of the best Free jams there is.
Best version ever
+Patrick Armstrong You haven't heard Amsterdam late 90's

mike really grabbed that one by the nuts and sent it to outerspace
Grabbed it right by the pussy

You are so absolutely spot on with this observation. My favorite Free jam, and possibly one of my favorite Phish jams of all time.
This never gets old. This song speaks to my soul!!!!
I have never seen trey not smiling on stage. He seems like such a cool dude
Coventry lol
Super-drugs

God damn this is an excellent live rendition of Free. Absolutely flawless.
This whole show is so fire. It makes me shed tears of joy
This is by far the greatest guitar playing ever recorded
I mean, the Divided Sky from 10/31/1994 is pretty fucking magical.

Everyone in this band understands their job. And they do their jobs well. Great time.
