  • NOW FOR SALE.
My car is a 1975 Austin Mini. This car has been completely restored and is now powered by a 4Lt rover v8 engine and 5 speed transmission. The carburettor is a four barrel Edelbrock 500 as is the inlet manifold. Crower 232 cam and stage 2 cylinder heads. Ignition is provided by Mallory. The cassis is made from 38mm CDS tubing. Fibre glass boot lid and bonnet. The car has a steel flip front to allow easy access to the engine. The differential is a Ford Sierra Cosworth LSD. The suspension is coil over shocks all round. Seats are black glass fibre buckets with 4 point harnesses. The car now has disk brakes all round with 4 pot callipers on the front and Ford Sierra callipers on the back. Due to the engine layout the radiator is in the rear of the vehicle. The wiring loom and all electrics are new. Wheels are alloy and are 15X8 all round. Weight is approximately 600Kg's.
This gives me 500BHP per tonne.
If you look on Ken Voss's website he has an applet to calculate quarter mile times. Mine comes out at 9.46 @ 144MPH which is a shame cos my tyres are rated at 130 MPH Ha Ha Ha.

That's the thing most other countries don't understand. Our cars are typically much larger and heavier, and need larger engines. The truth is that American built cars are the most reliable in the world. People see them broken down on the interstates here and call them junk, but what they fail to realize is that car likely has 350,000 miles on it and its original engine. We drive them until they won't drive anymore, then get another one.

I know it's a late response to your comment but I would say Rover did sort out the motor, it was always reliable (the police used Rover SD1 V8s and it was used in Range Rovers and TVR sportscars for many years too). Way too small for big american cars though so it was probably overstressed and underdeveloped. If I'd grown up around Ford or Chevy small/big blocks I wouldn't like the Buick lump either but it actually weighed less than iron block 2L (120cu/in) 4cyls of the era like the Ford Pinto.

It looks excellent, I just can't stand the Buick 215 engine. It was a disaster in the larger cars over here in the states. The aluminum would rot, the heads leaked like crazy and it didn't make much power, far too little for our cars. GM had essentially trashed the thing until they sold it to Rover. I'd love to see a Jag 3.9 or an Olds L47 in a Mini.

Isn't the engine bay of a classic mini big enough to accommodate the Rover 3.0 litre V8, in its normal transverse layout without a lot of fabrication?

  • @StumpyHead79
