- After watching the film Garbage Warrior, kiwi couple Nathan Rushton and Jess Fitzgerald were so inspired by Earthship architecture that they actually travelled to New Mexico to study Earthship Biotecture with pioneering architect Michael Reynolds.
After returning to New Zealand and finding an ideal location, the couple then began the process of designing and building a downsized version of an Earthship at their property in Raglan.

2014 this was filmed I would really like him to go back and revisit it is now 2020 and see if he ever finished it
thought the same!
2022 - same here
yer same.
Yeah same
Nathan and Jess have been totally snowed under since the birth of their baby so the build of this Earthship has been put on hold. We will be back to visit with them as soon as it's done though! :)
+Living Big In A Tiny House Hopefully they are getting on OK and you can revisit soon.
+Living Big In A Tiny House
Will be looking forward to when they finish.
I hope you can revisit them soon and enjoy that amazing views.
loved this house and would love to see more. Don't know how practical it would be having a baby there though unless you had lots of outside living space... kids need lots of room to play! an outside covered deck would do the trick though
how did the house turn out?
I was fortunate enough to meet Nathan and Jess in Taos, New Mexico while at the Earthship headquarters. What an amazingly inspirational couple! Look at what they've done in such a short amount of time. I think we all can learn so much from these two. Simple living, simple bills... that's the life. P.S. - Congrats on the baby news!
Would love to see this building once it's completed!
"I can't stand the idea of paying banks hundreds of thousands of dollars for 20, 30, 40 years of your life." In other words, he doesn't want to be a debt slave working some shit job he hates for stuff to be "normal." Smart man!
da324 - I live in a cave in the south of Spain. It cost me the same price as a car would have done. No heating or cooling costs apart from occasional use of a firewood stove in the coldest of winter up here in the mountains. No mortgage, no rent and I have a small garden. Paradise. Very low maintenance as well...
@@carltaylor4942 are there other caves available? I want to escape to nature. Did you buy one or just found?
@@gregwow8038- Hi! If you look on a map for Baza, Spain and then follow the map up to Pozo Alcon, that is all cave country. There are _thousands_ of caves ranging in price from 8 K Euro to a million Euro and in condition from very bad to excellent. I bought my present cave for 18,000 and spent 3 months making it habitable. I sold my previous cave for 19,000. There are also many cave houses - part cave, part house. There are many estate agents here who deal in caves. Get back in touch if you want more info. :)
@@gregwow8038- I meant to add, Google "Guadix caves" for a whole series of videos in English about the cave town of Guadix.
@@gregwow8038 There's a cave community somewhere in Utah, USA.
It's been ages bro when are you revisiting these guys?
I have a feeling that they didn't finish/sold the project after the baby came along he said in the beginning "we will see how far we get" & "I'm not sure I want to live in 10sq meters with a newborn". Bryce is usually really good at following up with people on builds.
earthquakes?
Both Earthships and the tiny house movement have been shaping my ultimate sedentary future/goals. Thanks for these great videos and incorporating this to your content. Really looking forward to the follow up to this build. ^_^
Glad you're enjoying them! Thanks for watching. :)
On that piece of land I'd live in the damn toilet and be happy.
Haha yes indeed
Same
It's a second video I am watching on this channel. Besides gorgeous views NZ has equally beautiful people.
Please do make another vid when it's all done, it looks like it's going to be spectacular (especially with a green roof in those rolling hills)
Bryce, thank you for sharing another great clip. One thing that is nice about the Earthship design is that they have the capability to add to it. I think it will be adorable when they are finished. Can't wait for the update. I've been watching all your videos and can't wait to see the next one on your Tiny house build. I'm planning a tiny house for my retirement which will be an adjustment as I am in the home I grew up in with many additions and approximately 2,000 square feet, and 3.45 acres. Your videos are an inspiration, so keep them coming. Good luck with your Tiny Home.
I didn't realize that New Zealand was so beautiful. Your clips are terrific.
TheTexasbuddy Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit were filmed there too.
Looking forward to the finished house. Congratulations on the birth of your new baby. The views are spectacular. Location, Location, Location!!!
I look forward so much to seeing this finished
This is literally the future of homes.
Looking forward to an update on this earthship. Have you been out there lately? Thank you for what you do.
That is gorgeous cant wait to see what it turns into once its done
The view is breathtaking!
I would love to see how these folks get on with their project. My prayer is for their success, with the build, and their pending addition to their family.
i look forward to seeing it when its all said and done.
Bryce, I'm a huge (NEW) fan of yours and your channel - love all your interviews!
The best place to start is always where you are at..Great start to your big dreams.. thanks for sharing and hope your journey goes well past your expectations..regards..
They are brilliant
amazing project.
i wanna see it completed =)
good vibrations from a brazilian guy that enjoyed this channel crazily.
When will the re-visit video happen? I'm very anxious to see the final product!!!
Beautiful. Smart kids.
Beautiful view wow!
Gorgeous property. I would LOVE to live somewhere like that. I live between two or three mountains so I could never live anywhere flat. I think it would smother my soul.
Now this is what I really want to build - a Tiny House Earthship home!
Wishing them the best 😊
Since they're expecting a baby soon, maybe they could get those 40 friends back over to help them finish the house. I really enjoyed your video, and as always a very professional interview in an entertaining manner.
0:46 sponsored by Pepsi
It just continues to zoom in with the Pepsi in the center lmao 😂
LOL, at first I just couldn't understand why it was so small, then I realized it was a two story. Seems like just enough space with the lofted bedroom. Add some kids and you'll be expanding soon. Very cool!
whats up w/the follow up??? I love the prop. gorgeous.
Is there a video with this one finished, I love the size. That view is beautiful.
Living somewhere where the mountains are next to the ocean is my ultimate goal. I think I have found my total dream spot
I think I saw Bilbo's house in the distance...
i wouldnt mind waking up to that🌄
Was there ever a follow up video for this? It's 4-5 years ago, I'd love to see if they got it finished 😊
Gosh how i wish i were young again, i own my 3 bed house in suburbia, but given the choice i would opt for this! my hubby and i would have plenty of space, were he still alive, instead 2 bedrooms are just for guests now & storage.
I just love these.
Looks really good so far. Any updates on this lil earthship?
This was great! Is there a follow up yet?
Interesting small home, I hope its worked out well for them. I bet it looks great in snow. Surely he will have a wood burner by now.
that view!!
Is there an update on Nathan and Jess with their Extraordinary Micro Earthship in New Zealand
very awesome!
forgive a logical question:
are they doing anything to stop termites?
You Chanel is very nice. I just subscribe today thank you
Has this Earthship been completed yet Bryce? Would love to view some follow up videos of some of your old episodes.
Hey there Bryce - just wondering if there are any further updates on this build?
My goodness look at the view .
can we get a revisit tour to this place?
NZ is sooo beautiful. I wish to go there one day.
Does it ever snow there?
Did you ever get to go back and film the completed structure?
is this house finish?i really want to see after.😊
So still not finished? Would be interested to see how it ended up.
hi, amazing! i want to do something like this but not on such a grand scale. Wondering about building code and laws about building using tires or logs or other unconventional building materials. How much in rates do you pay? I didnt think you could build like this in nz? how do you get approval etc.
Awesome. I thought it was difficult to get permissions to build this kind of structure here, I'd be interested to here more about the consents
is there a follow up video ?
I wonder if they're completed by now.. ?
I wonder if the relation between space and price is not to high
Have you done a follow up on this project?
the view was spectacular T.T can i go there n buy land too????
Is there an update video we can check out yet?
hopefully they nail studded the tires before adding plaster to make it really stick on well. all they need to do after that is build a greenhouse off the front and they will be good to go
Love the idea but what happen when it rains with the dirt being the walls? Nz does rain a lot.
Is there an update to this? We are looking to build our own house about the same size (maybe smaller!)
When you gonna re visit and get this Earth ship done ?
Did they every get this place finshhed? and id you ever go back and get a finished update?
It seems this house will never be finished. BTW, why aren't the windows angled like other earhship? I thought window position was vital to the whole system?
Awesome job Nathan and Jess, all the best with your ES life. Re people's comments about using poisonous tyres for wall construction in Earthships >>>>These tyres are neither going to be exposed to heat or light in their building construction use and will in fact be much less of a hazard in that use than stored outside in a dump. People have double garages under their houses with parked cars that have tyres that aren't under a layer of plaster, that have just done heat inducing wheel spinning getting people home! Tyres are used for playground surfaces... Tyres are on vehicles in car showrooms where car sales people work 8 hour days. The computer/phone equipment we just used to type out our comment (and the flat screen tv we watch) contains all the chemicals people mention that tyres contain and more, inches from our nose. Should we ban those uses or wear a SCBA or a painters filter mask?
Very cool! I feel like they could have sounded more excited about it on camera especially the girlfriend. I would chill in there with the tires exposed and everything and be perfectly happy with it haha.
How’s it looking now
Oh my god... That is disgusting... An interesting build... Unique... Everything... I'm not sure what my mind is thinking about that...
Hello. Please give us an update. Thanks
still no follow up? :(
I hope everything worked out.
Do you have to worry about outgassing from the tires???
How was it now at this time?
Do they have off gassing. We where in an Earthship in Arizona and it had off gassing
genial
I am all for using tires as a recyclable material, but this is a bit to literal for me. There are plenty of people who appreciate Earth-type houses - I'm just more of a wood framed kind of person. Still and all, very interesting.
What has become of this build? I anxiously awaited the update :(
He said they were snowed under for a while and it put off the project for a little while. I'm sure we'll see something soon.
really ??? i live close by and it dont snow round these parts.
snowed Under (as in overwhelming problems, not weather "snow")
Love the concept, but the view in the toilet won't be much when squatting! A Squat Toilet is fine for young folks, but when your knees and hips are worn out from age, it might be a little difficult to stand up again... lol
According to the EPA, benzene, mercury, styrene-butadiene, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and arsenic, among several other chemicals, heavy metals and carcinogens, have been found in tires. Studies have found that crumb rubber can emit gases that can be inhaled.
From what I understand as tires decompose they let off gases that cause respiratory problems if inhaled for extended periods of time. How do you prevent that problem? Plaster wouldn't do it, the gases would just build up and crack the plaster over time.
Abyssal86 Seriously? so earthship design is flawed?
Andrew Towell
As it's presented here, yeah I think so.
As I understand it tyres degrade through exposure to UV and extremes of heat. If they are packed with earth and buried they are exposed to neither. They will still gradually decompose naturally though but very very slowly.
I was in Taos for 15 years and the topic of...off gassing...from the tires was a hot debate. Some people claim to be sensitive to it,,,,others have lived in Earthships for decades and have had no problems. I visited one incredible place that had 2ft. of tires,,,then 2 ft.of strawbales inside that! It was 25 below zero, and that house, with no heat of any type running for over a month was 70 degrees. there were banana trees in the south facing garden that were doing ok. The layer of strawbales inside the tires was to eliminate any chance of off gassing from the tires to the inside of the house. Personally,,i would just buy a quonset hut shell,,,or blow a gunnite quonset shape,,,and bury it in 2 ft. of earth above ground,,,,every bit as efficient and way easier to build. The metal building companies will make you dormers to cut in around windows,or side entrances, and you can get a 1200 sq. ft. quonset for 7 0r 8 thousand dollars. If you buried it with tires,,,then dirt,,,the gases couldn't come through the metal either,,ha! Although I agree with the other guy that commented here that, once buried,,,the tires shouldn't decay,,,I wouldn't take the chance,,,the tire build is extremely labor intensive, and I met more than one person who gave up their Earthship home because of illness. Radon comes up through the ground and collects the same way,,once you build a box over the ground,so,,,in New Mexico,,you really have to put down a solid layer of plastic or something under your footings to keep the gases from collecting in your home. You could do the same for your walls, but it disrupts the process of plastering over the tires. Why bother? Just buy some type of shell structure,,,and bury it with loose earth, above ground. Shell structures will survive any natural disaster, they go up quickly,,,and covered with earth will repel emf, and give you a peaceful,,highly efficient living environment
Coca cola products are good for cleaning! Lol. Love the vids. Keep them coming.
Ok this was over 6 yrs ago......so have they finished it yet???
They are like from the post-apocalyptic future, both the home and it's creators )
0:46 that product placement though
Has this been revisited??
I don't care if I live in a cardboard box, I'd drop everything to live in that beautiful land!!
I had the same project, but i shot up some stuff and now its on hold...
Wouldn't they be really cold using the bathroom over winter?
So ..... like 6 years, not 6 months later .... is it an update ? ;)
Is it finished yet??
#living in a tiny house Did they buy the land? I've been watching all your videos and am liking the idea of not paying the banks for the rest of my life but do these people buy the land too?
Awesome looks like a real adventurous challenge to live like this. But it probably gets boring after awhile.
Just curious... What is the point of the cans??? Does it do anything??? Does it count as littering to a certain degree since lots of the cans are buried as part of the structure is built into the ground? May seem like a dumb question but can someone actually seriously answer the question without belittling me for having the question? Lol. Thank you!
P.S. I'm actually seriously considering buying a tiny house, myself.
It count's as "just more recicling to fill the holes in the walls", so that you can then render the wall to a good looking finish.... althouth I wouldn't use aluminium inside anything that you want to keep in a good state for long... It tends to rust away quite easy once you bury it... PVC or any other plastic will last 3 times longer underground than aluminium underground and aluminium will last 3 times exposed to the elements then any kind of plastic.....
did the earthquakes affect this building?
Did you go back?
