    There is no greater agony in life then doing the windmill in clogs, the 6+ pairs of socks cutting off the circulation to your feet, toes squished together, hopping up and down repeatedly with your arms and legs pin straight, moving in a coordinated circle using your one, exhausted leg-exhausted as you perform the dances for the fourth time that day, sweating and sunburnt from being up and active for hours, chugging your water, now warm. Seriously tho lmao it was a really fun experience and u get free cookies at the fire station bc otherwise youll faint. Really fun, spinning in circles with giant skirts is enjoyable. 9/10 would do it again.

      @@lienbijs1205. My humorous Dutch grandfather would tell fish stories that we knew as “Whoppers.” When I was younger people while at a social tradition told me about Jonah and the Whale. I knew that story was a “Whopper” because I watched Pinocchio.
      There were Hollanders who claimed that "Mister Ed" who was in a documentary they watched on TV was a distant relative of Balaam's talking donkey.
      I went to Camp Geneva to listen to ghost stories about talking snakes, golem spell dirt men, enchanted fruit, talking shrubbery, food falling from the sky, a female salt shaker, talking donkeys, Noah's magic zoo boat, ghost sex, alien landings, zombies, magic hair, magical goblins, giants (Bigfoot), magically multiplying food, magic blood, an invisible magic kingdom, the heebie-jeebies, 900 year old humans, and a man who lived in a fish.
      My Oma was Danish and she made the best Danish pancakes that were sugar filled. My parents bought practical gifts for Christmas but when Oma and Opa came on Christmas morning I realized they were the real Santa and Mrs. Claus. True story.
      Danish folk story teller Hans Christian Andersen sang a song about the emperor's new clothes. It's just like the invisible armor of god thrifty Hollanders told me they were wearing to protect themselves from the Boogeyman.

    Eerste dans is de ‘Skotse Trye’ - een Friese volksdans. Jammer dat de muziek bijna niet is te horen. Tot mijn twaalfde liep ik behalve op schoenen ook op klompen. Dat is voor de voeten beter dan op schoenen lopen overigens.

    • @jolienvsndijk
      @jolienvsndijk Před 5 lety +6

      the guy on the couch x they're clogs (wooden shoes) it's how farmers in the Netherlands used to protect their feet while working (if anything would fall on their foot the shoe would break instead of the bones). They filled them with hay for comfort so it's not that bad if you're used to them.

    • @theblondebirdgirl392
      @theblondebirdgirl392 Před 5 lety +4

      I’m a Dutch dancer and, they’re actually quite comfortable! We wear 5-10 pairs of socks when we dance to keep our shoes tight and prevent any flyaway shoes during the high kicks. The actual farmers and fishermen in the Netherlands would not wear that many socks.

      Please be careful on who you judge is Dutch or not Dutch.
      People that were kidnapped from their country and loaded on crammed ships and hauled to the Nederlands as slaves, their descendants are Dutch? They were forced Dutch.
      Muslims can't be Dutch? Muslim is a religion not an ethnicity.
      I understand that you mean by blood or ethnically Dutch.
      But take a look at the history of the Nederlands before these Dutch immigrated to Michigan and Iowa in the 1800s. Most of Europe had states controlled by the church, when there wasn't religious freedom. Jews were heavily persecuted, and the Nederlands was very free and tolerant. Many Jews and others who wanted religious freedom migrated to the Nederlands. The Pilgrims that went to the New World fled the Church of England. But they first came to the Nederlands.
      So some of the Dutch that came to Holland Michigan could be English or Jewish.
      And don't judge the whole of the Nederlands by Amsterdam. The rest of the country is very different than Amsterdam. Don't judge upstate New York by NYC, don't judge us rest of Michiganders by Detroit.
