    The handle is not only there to crank the anchor up. You can also open the inner socket with it. This disconnects the drum from the windlass, what can be used to quickly release some meters of chain.
    When on a new boat, you should always tighten this socket to make sure, that the drum is safely connected to the windlass and you do not lose you anchor. (Yes, the chain might be tied to the boat, but 50m of freely falling chain will definitely break it loose)

    How to do it from the helm (as mentioned, that you could), if the lanyard and safty switch is on???
    Won't you just have to go there anyway???
