I need engine work on my 6.2 amg. Ported heads, hotter cam and other stuff. What Chicago area mechanic do you recommend for high performance rebuild?
@@handyman3320 Alex has a bunch of videos where he goes to www.fluidmotorunion.com/
It's not exactly what I would consider Chicagoland area though

Alex, never tried this but the results are fantastic. I think you set a strong example of,
a. Being prepared
b. Doing all the prep
c. Taking your time and doing it right
Poll: What's more amazing? The results he got? Or the fact that there is a BMW with 409,000 miles?
Definitely that there is 409,000 miles on a BMW and I haven't even watched the video yet. He must have had to dump a lot of money into it.
The mileage
@@koteletten84 if "by take care of it" you mean constantly have to take it in to get repaired after it's just a few years old then sure. I keep a car maybe 8 years and drive maybe 175,000 miles in that time. I want a car that need nothing more than regular maintenance (oil changes, etc) and things like tires and breaks. You aren't going to get that with any German cars. And when they do start needing repairs they are absurdly expensive.
A German car like a BMW is good for maybe 40,000-50,000 miles. Then you are better off getting rid of it. It's just a bottomless pit that sucks in money after that.
@@jimv1983 by modern BMW standard, sure, I wouldn't keep one past the warranty. But you have bought into the stereotype that BMW's are bottomless money pits, which is absolutely false. This era and back BMW are phenomenal cars, and if they were properly maintained they do not constantly need big exspensive repairs as you say. My family bought a 1 owner 94 325is coupe with the M50B25(Inline 6 cylinder motor) with 40,000 miles in 1999. My mother daily drove it 100 miles round trip for work for 6 years, then continued to drive it daily 40 miles round trip until 2009, and I proceeded to drive the car from that point until 2011. When I sold that car, it had over 120,000 miles and only went in to the repairshop once, for a new radiator and hoses. Pretty cheap to keep that car for 12 years. And it is still on the road to this day with the person I sold it to. I currently daily drive a 97 328i with 178,000 miles and a 2003 330i with 158,000 miles, I would without hesitation load up the trunk with luggage and go across the country in either car right now. If you take care of these cars, they will take care of you, and there are plenty of older BMW's that hit 300k-400k miles. In my experience they are extremely easy to work on and that comes from someone with little to no wrenching experience. Usually the inline 6 motors only need a cooling system refresh every 75,000 -100,000 miles and they are good to go. Which is not much, you will pay that to keep any used car on the road. I have owned 4 old BMW's and they have been some of the most reliable cars I've ever owned.
@@letsplayclassicgames5024 the experience is very unusual for BMWs. They are very often bottomless money pits.
Might use the dye to fill in the cracks on my forehead 🥴

I guess you could say you're a crackhead...
I really miss my 2000 M5. I remember how nice that full leather interior option was and how incredible it was. There was nothing else like it back then.
Absolutely perfect timing. I just bought a Lexus GX470 and wanted to touch up the front seats. Thanks Alex.
It looks great Alex, my only concern is will the shoe polish / dye leach back onto your clothes in the long run
I wonder long term how it will hold up
I've been using it for years. I use a really thick layer as my 2nd coat, let it sit on the seats for a couple of hours and with a microfiber towel go over it gently making sure its evenly distributed and just let it dry over night. In the morning i go over it again with more pressure on the microfiber towel to remove excess.
What if it’s not evenly distributed
Alex Polishchuk in my case its never fully dry. It doesnt give it a shine so if you miss spots just go over those.
does any of it come off onto your clothes?
with liquid leather (filler) from lederzentrum in germany for example you can really get those cracks repaired in a way that you actually cant really tell anymore that the seats were cracked. there are probably other similar products :D
colourlock? schöne grüsse aus schaffhausen ;)
Such a satisfying watch. Love this type of transformation.
I've used the Kiwi before on my black interior and you're right, it does leave the leather shiny. Never knew about the Doc Bailey's stuff...gotta try it. Thanks for the tip!
Good job on the leather, it’s always satisfying breathing new life into an older used car. Nice M5!
I used to work for a company called Griots Garage and I ran their car care school. They make a product called Leather Rejuvinator that literally can make those cracks almost completely disappear and without using die at all. Another thing is the outside temp. It is not exactly warm in Chicago right now and that affects how the pours of the leather absorb conditioner/rejuvenator. I used to love applying GG Leather Rejuvinator to a customers car in the heat of the summer. Close it up and let that soak in to the seats for a couple of hours and it would be like a miracle.
Back when I had my E90, it had 225k miles on it and the leather was practically worn out all over the place. The dye as you recommended really helped me in making the car look a million times better before I sold it.
Idk why I think of a sunny day, 90 degrees inside, white t shirt, driving along, sweating a bit from the leather seats, getting out of the car aaand kboom... new black t shirt and pants.
Thank you for making a video. Now I know what to do for my seats. 🙏
Thanks for the tip on the Doc Baileys leather black, I’m currently restoring an SLK230 flood car and this product is amazing!!!
Perfect timing! I’m just about to do the interior in my E28
Amazing what yah can do . They music was cool as well,
Watching your videos is relaxing while feeling like I’ve accomplished something.
As always Thanks Alec.
Been watching your videos for awhile now, must say very great video(s). Keep it up Alex
Going to give this treatment a go on my 385,000 mile all original merc interior, its not bad but could do with a little tlc, like the quick easy application of this stuff.
Nice job Alex.
whats it like having that kind of miles on a car? does everything fall apart at a certain point?
@@h7pubg Everythings still good.👍
@@Jonc25 nice, we have 2 jags, fortunately made during the ford period, done preventative maintenance, but i really want to keep especially the xk8 forever, i would be willing to redo engine and trans and suspension down the line when it has a ton of miles (84k rn) just bc it has personal value , but idk if at a certain level everything else just fails like wiring and stuff you can’t really get to. hopefully i can keep it on the road for a long time.
@@h7pubg Still got the Merc, now showing 415 thousand miles, i won't be letting it go anytime soon.
XK8 is a nice one to keep.
Watched full video and looks great! Bought a M5 about two months ago so I'll be trying this as well!
Awesome!! Enjoy!
love your videos , I have had great results from Lithium Leather Love. It has made a tremendous difference in my '03 SL500 interior. Completely erased all the little cracks in the leather. It does a fantastic job bringing old leather back to life. I am not a distributor, or get compensated by Lithium in any way, I have just been detailing cars for 30+ years and like to pass along what works.
crazy box I recently found Leather Love as well; the stuff is amazing! A true restorer and conditioner. No more Leatherique. Going full time with this.
My old BMW E46 seats of the same year as your ones looked exactly the same, before and after, using a simple black Wapro shoe dye thinned with a turpentine soaked rag to really get into the cracks. Amazingly easy and effective. So true, your comment about never selling a car without doing it.
Btw, 3 years ago and still looking fine.
Thanks! Going to try this on my e39, those brushes look awesome
Cool. I was looking for a simple solution for my old Z4. Thank you very much.
FINALLY BMW VIDEO ! I've been waiting for this for far too long :D
AWESOME JOB!!!BMW M5 What a DIAMOND!!!LOVE,LOVE and LOVE!!!
For the mileage, those seats look fantastic!
Looks mint! Nicely done, Alex!
Perfect timing posting this I need to do this on my E36
And I on my E39. Thankfully rear seats are mint.
Huge transformation. Nice work.
I love a care taking approach instead of a replacing approach. And leather is allowed to have a few wrinkles, gives a worn in and expensive look and feel.
Never thought I’d see a BMW with such high miles...
My dad has a 15 impala that has 250k miles on it
@@casio5658 BMWs are luxury cars with expensive maintenance which is why you'll almost never see one with high mileage. This guy just knows how to take care of it.
@@mohamedbaradji7504 no its because bmws are shitboxes 😂
my E60 got 250k miles
@@casio5658 it’s because it’s a BMW M5, you actually want to drive the car lol
Alex thanks for such a informative video! Your interior looks great and I’m gonna have to try that leather product that you used!🐟
Your interior is soooo choice!!! Great work!!!!
That reminds me I've got to Polish my Allen Edmonds shoes. Great video my friend.
I took mine to the upholstery guy and he did my seat bolsters. They were completely worn down to the bare leather. After he was done it looked 100% original. I was amazed. He wouldn't tell me what he did but charged me 100 bucks. I was very happy.
I used colourbond products on my car. It’s also a leather paint/dye but it’s specifically intended for seating surfaces. I also used crack filler and glue to fix the small torn areas like you have to give an even nicer result. Look into their products if you’ve never heard of them as they are very DIY friendly.
This was the fist M car I had ever driven back in 2004. What a car it was. Good memories.
Love the work man! Think about it, it’s actually much more durable to keep an M5 going than buying a new car every 3 years. Would be awesome to see it hit 500,000 mls :)
Top 5 interiors of all time
I use Leatherique leather dye. Does an outstanding job.
WOW man kuddos to you for long hauling the car.. so beautiful. German for life ♥️
It looks really great Alex. Hard to believe it's got 400k miles on it.
Thank you! will be trying this
I have low mileage w211 its a 2003 with 41000 miles on it. The leather seats are on really good condition but do have a few sciffs etc on them . So I tried this on all the scuffs and applied a coat over all the seats . The seats look like the have just left the factory ,amazing stuff.I am in the uk and the only way I could get this product was on ebay from a seller in Florida total cost with deliery about 12 dollars. Keep making the great vids regards Tom uk.
Great job that’s awesome the results look great
I think the silver stone seats are LEGIT. No a fan of the black seats after seeing the silver stone package. Hey I'm your 999th LIKE!
Great job man definitely a nice budget fix. Check out leatherique though as well, they also have a flexible crack filler that combined with their dye makes the seats look brand new.
Nice job man... My Buick may need this treatment in a few years out here in this Texas sun...
I would recommend three step restoration: filler, paint, clear coat for these cracked seats. this method is good for 3-6 months
what happens after 6 months? the filler falls out?
@@gregh7457 it fades away
I did similar with same year BMW seats using a Wapro shoe dye. Did it 3 years ago, still looks good.
@@gregh7457 the shoe polish fades away
Or you can bring the car to a car upholsterer and he can change the leather of the seats + the sponge that is compressed and worn and have brand new seats, not the old ones with paint on them. Yes, it will not cost 50 $ or under but you will have new seats. This whole dye thing is just an eye smudge so you can sell the car easily.
My 2 Cents here :)
Awesome..... Super helpful Video Alex
need to do this on my new to me expedition, good video alex
Amazing results! What would you recommend for gray leather on an E36 M3?
Amazing..... Doc Bailey's should become a fully paid sponsor after your review.
I totally agree
The seats look SO much better! Are you planning on owning this one long term? Take it to 1,000,000?
No not me but someone will.
It's already been sold back to the previous owner.
Douglas Owens ah gotcha. Thanks for letting us know
@@douglasowens4248 You know this? How much did he sell it back to the prior owner for?
Rockin that old skool Makita drill!
Looks great!
Would you recommend adding a conditioner after this process to extend the protection and look?
Love bmws ,straight quality
What was your experience some time after applying the leather dye/conditioner? Did it fade away or wipe off? Did it stain clothing? Was it slippery on the steering wheel? What leather conditioner would you recommend on top of this dye (I understand it already has something in it)?
Those are prime candidates for a restoration!
Great job!
Lovely work
2 years laterrrrrrrrr Still Legit !!
Who agrees with him that it looks amazing?
I do
I don’t

Love this video
I have restored 94 e34 with 317000 miles and she still works like a gem
What if you have perforated leather seats? Like for the ventilated seat function. Would you still recommend rubbing dye on perforated seats??

Ive got a 1993 e320 and the leather seats still look new btw haha👍 love your work Alex.
Awesome T-shirt!
The foam in those things look in good nick. No big boys squashed the sides.
Decent results but it would've been surpassingly better if you had sanded the leather and filled the cracks with leather fill in the seats. It would level out the majorly cracked areas especially on the bolsters. But great vid anyway! Thanks bro!
Looking good 👍🏿
That’s a very neat car
This was good, hope those product ship world wide. 👌👌👌🤓🤓
Nice job duude
that car looks amazing!
*🌠Great job it is much Better🌅*
Any experience with leatherique? I plan on using that after the 5050 alcohol and water spray.
wow! that interior looks mavelous!
Just a friendly question but did u consider a steamer to shrink some of the leather back to shape before dye application?
I didn't for this video because i wanted to show an inexpensive method anyone can do without any special tools. But, that's a great idea.
how much does a steamer cost?
@@gregh7457 Look it up on Amazon. You can get a decent one (not vacuum combined - only steamer) for ~60$.
Saddle soap can do some magic on leather. 303 protectant for plastic inside and out.
Saddle soap can do double duty on cleaning hoses and wiring in the engine bay too.
Katzkins makes replacement covers. I’d recommend those for any car worth over 7k or so.
Earned my subscription
clean with alcohol and a little ceramic coat on those seat belt release buttons makes a big difference. and ouch that passenger side weather stripping needs some love.
I have a 2004 SL 55 that had ripped and torn drivers seat with side bolsters that were severely worn. I bought a complete passenger seat for $400 and then took all 3 backs to an upholstery shop who took the best sections from each cover and pieced it together. Charged $135 for that. I ended with perfect seats with no wear.
Great work Alex they've come up really well, here in the UK we use Gliptone (maybe you use it in the USA I don't know?) which is superb 👍👍
Does it help soften the leather? The seats in my M3 are in great shape just some parts are very tight and stretched
Nice Carl dude
What about a top coat? Factory leathers have a clear/sealer so does this just sit atop?
nice job dude. any ideas for the caramel color seats!?
Nice video!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great job. Is there anything for white interior on a bmw
I would try doing another coat of Doc's. It looks better than before but could use another coat if it would make a difference....? At least in a spot no one would notice, at least to try out. My leather is very light tan and has a few of the same splits in the leather like you do. Any easy way to fix besides "spackling" and painting as in other videos?
I’ve seen a detailer use some sort of putty to cover all the cracking and then apply the paint which restores the seats back to almost brand new looking. Looks good, but could look even better.
