They really are flown in first class. Generally they are purchased before they even arrive at the facility, in some cases they are collected specifically for a client.

Candy Basslets aren't as reclusive as you suggest. When 1st added to a tank, they will find a cave to dwell in and usually can be spotted hanging out there (although usually very hard to spot). After several months, they are usually easily spotted and will swim from in and around your nooks and crannies. Then during feeding time can even be seen in "open" water.

@@bummbrotha1065... it's been discovered that they eat sponges in the wild. Consequently, if you feed them specialist sponge based food in the aquarium, they'll stand a chance of lasting for some time.
Trouble is, they grow big if they do last a long time, and the sponge food gets really expensive when they pile on body mass.

  • @sunnygoold9449

Awesome - I would say you covered all the fish - there are a few below $1000 that are crazy expensive and difficult (femininus and some special fairy wrasse, ventralis anthias, yellow hawkfish and the peppermint hogfish - all of those fish I'd be happy owning if they were under $200 but really all the ones you have on your list are better.
I would say that the Candy Basslet is a great fish and I am planning on getting the swales. Also I have seen captive bred multibars (I want to get a pair) and these are deeper water angels so should be reefsafe. The masked angelfish are also totally reefsafe as are all the geinacantus - all of those are great alternatives - I like the spotbreast ;)
What you should do is a popular Hawaiian fish list and alternatives

I like cichlids or bass because first Their not expensive (some times) and secondly you can just catch them and grow them out they’ll probably be more interesting than some 10, 000 dollar limited edition blue tang. is there something stopping people from breeding the more expensive fish? that's the only part I'm confused about, how their prices stay so high

Some of them are, including the masked angel. It's just difficult to work out so takes a lot of time and expertise so doesn't happen for many fish.

Hawaii isn't a country, it is the 50th state in the United States of America. The Mailed/Reticulated butterflyfish is a close match for a wrought-iron butterfly. As is the white-faced butterflyfish.

This is why I keep a firemouth that I bought as a baby from a private breeder for just £ 1! 😃 PS My grandad was Jewish.

I think it's strange people pay more for a hybrid, I'm a pure bread kinda guy. Take a macro shot of the face of a scopas tang and tell me that's not a bad ass looking fish.

I don’t get the appeal of candy basslets. They look cool but not cool enough to be $1000. An lfs had one near me I think it was closer to $2000 but I don’t get why they are so crazy. Plenty of nice fish that look similar for less than a 10th of the price.

If they look as bright in the flesh as they do on the live aquaria picture, they'd be awesome 🙄
