Johnnyswim: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Once you're able to see this three-song set by the band Johnnyswim, NPR Music will have published exactly 350 Tiny Desk Concerts - so we've developed a pretty good sense of when a set will stick in our memories for a while. We intuited, for example, that Adele was about to become a dominant force shortly after she breezed into our offices. (Okay, that didn't exactly require psychic powers, but still.) In the case of Johnnyswim, the prevailing sense boiled down to, "Boy, we haven't heard the last of them."
Impossibly telegenic and charming, husband and wife Abner Ramirez and Amanda Sudano - who formed their band in Nashville before relocating to L.A. - have the booming voices of great street buskers, but also the polished sparkle of natural-born stage performers. Sudano is the daughter of the late Donna Summer, with whom she used to sing backup, but Johnnyswim's story isn't one of nepotism or overnight success; the two have been at this together for nearly a decade, and they've got the grandiose impeccability to prove it.
In this set, the lovely ballad "Falling for Me" is bookended by songs that could be airdropped onto half the shows on television; if you're hearing them here for the first time, don't be surprised if it's your first exposure of many. Johnnyswim opens this session with "Home" - a sweet rouser that could easily follow in the footsteps of other recent hits with that title - and closes it with a full-band reading of what promises to be its signature song, the title track from the new Diamonds. As Sudano notes here, the song has morphed into "an anthem to ourselves to keep ourselves encouraged." For Johnnyswim, such pep talks won't likely be necessary for long. --STEPHEN THOMPSON

The way they look each other is relationships goals.
Donna Summer's daughter's voice is velvet and so is her husbands. I love Jonnyswim.
6 years later, in 2020. they're still awesome but they deserve more attention!
Donna Summer would be so proud of Amanda, amazing voice, just like her mom's. I'm Loving this singing duo.❤️❤️❤️
How have I not seen this? I love Johnnyswim and Tiny Desk. You're failing me CZcams Algorithm
They're so young in this one! Pre-kids A+A are soo cute.
well I just commented the same thing on a discord server so
Same
I KNOW RIGHTTTTTTTT?????????
They don't only sing their songs. They express their feeling to audience and I can feel it all 150%
What a great great couple!!!!
Awn this is so cute how it ends and she says I want to have a kid with this guy one day. Now look at them! ✨
Abner is just an animal vocally and their performance chemistry is lovely. For the interested, the Live At Daryl's House of Annie is sublime.
Daryl's House also best version of Diamonds.
I looked up because I'm a big Donna Summer fan and this woman is her youngest daughter Amanda and this is her husband Abner. I became a big fan after listening to this just once. Now This is the four time I've seen this video. I'm a big JOHNNYSWIM FAN.
Just found them yesterday, then discovered they are playing in KC Friday. Can’t wait to see them live. Feeling blessed! Their amazing harmonies remind me of Lone Bellow. They sing with every ounce they have with no fear. Love it.
Ughhh their music is so light and airy and refreshing and lovely.
The love between these two is so amazing. Can't get a stage presence like that from everyone.
+Priscilla Chuong if you like them, check out "The Civil Wars"
7 Yearrrrrrrs!!!!!! Man Time Flies.
I don't know if this music they're making is country, folk, or a combo with soul. All I know is whatever they're doing here is so full of passion and heart. It's greatly appreciated and I'm NOT one who listens to country or folk music on a regular basis. I was told by a co-worker to check out Donna Summer's daughter and husband duo since he knew I am a big fan of Donna Summer. Fantastic job Johnnyswim, keep doing what you're doing!!! :)
Their music. I still don't know what their style is but I can feel the spirit. Some songs has the spirit of gospel
@@ABLynWilson Yes! I feel those vibes from their music too. I love their music!😊
Wow, just heard this for the very first time today... 7 years on... Outstanding! I truly believe music finds YOU, not the other way around.... I really needed to hear 'Diamonds' as this relates to my life situation right now.... If I'd have heard it 7 years prior, I'd have liked it, sure... but it wouldn't have had the impact on me then, as it did today... I'll may just become that diamond, rising up out of the dust..... I got this!! Cheers Johnnyswim! Now to go dig deeper into this band and discover new tunes... 🙂
There is a genuine passion here that is rare in performances these days. You can tell that these words have meaning to them and even more so there is a deep connection between the two of them and to just being happy making music.
This makes me want to go do something and not sit at my desk!
DKSouthpaw dude yes was literally thinking this then scrolled down and saw your comment
DANCE!!
These guys are an amazing Duo, beautiful couple and so so talented.... Johnnyswim deserve way more exposure!
I've love them forever ....@johnnyswim you are loved 🙏✌💜
I don't know if Johnny can swim but he surely can sing, and I'm almost sure that Amanda taught him to smile.
that was funny 😅
Love it, I can't understand how Home isn't everywhere at the moment. One of my favorite songs
Thank you NPR for introducing me to The Lone Bellow and now these guys, such amazing music.
Same! Love it :)
It's rare to see such chemistry, and I love that NPR brought this and another example in The Civil Wars(RIP) to us.
Their connection is awesome, so in sync with one another. You can see it in their eyes, body language and in their songs..Love Them!!!
Yessssss! One of my most favorite tiny desk concerts! They sound exactly like this live...so much talent in these two 😍
As soon as I saw her I thought, "She reminds me of Donna Summer!" Amazing music!
Yep, Donna Summer is Amanda's mother :)
usooicee 20 or 30 people always post that info in every Johnnyswim video comment section.
ZeeZee S. Duh.
usooicee ... Duh? Really? But you also posted it tho ... LOL!
ZeeZee S. ...Duh. lol why is it a big deal? Maybe some people just didn't know. I honestly don't see what the big deal is but whatever, have a good day.
These two! They are so inspiring to watch and listen to. More people need to pay attention to them. This is the real music from the heart and soul. I listen to Diamonds every day. It's opens up channels I didn't even know existed. Love lives!
Absolutely amazing! Had me hooked from the first few notes, fantastic melody, fantastic harmonies, great lyrics. Really blew me away!
How could somebody not love these people!
This is unbelievably good! I don't think I've ever seen two people more in sync with each other. Absolutely amazing.
Listen, no one loves the Civil Wars more than I do, but for now, they are no longer. This duo, married or not have a vibe ALL THEIR OWN. Great music and song writing is great music and song writing. They are sooooo good and I can't wait to see them live at Bowery Ballroom on 8/19. Even flying my bro out to NYC for one night so we can see them together. Good music is good music, period.
They are married. They've been married since 2009.
Jealous when I saw Tiny Desk filmed these guys! I hope we can catch them in Boston. Great songs, great performance, great video.
They make the kind of music that is played in Heaven
Love it! Fantastic voices and writing. WE ARE THE DIAMONDS
i cant tell who carries the group they’re both so talented
Saw these guys supporting Old Crow Medicine Show in England and they killed it. Good to see they are still amazing
lovely couple. we had the chance to catch them in Augusta GA at the westabou festival ...great to see them gain momentum. Love the song "I am"...thank you NPR. Thanks Johnnyswim!
This guy used to be the worship leader at my church!!
that's really cool!
Well, that's disappointing.
NoLord why?
Because religion is fake, and I'm sad to hear about anyone being tricked by it.
I'm not a Christian but whats its your business if they are. They seem grounded and talented.
OMG they're so cute together! Loved their passion.
May whatever exists out there keep this beautiful and talented couple together
I haven't been this inspired by a group in years. thank you.
They are my new favorite group - saw them at the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA last week - and have been hooked every since!
I love the Civil Wars. They are exquisite. Better musician/singers, but what they lack in connection Johnnyswim makes up in spades. Love these two. Love, LOVE, these two.
Ooh those harmonies, ear candy!
This music is so charged with emotion and energy; it's electrifying.
So obsessed with them..
They're amazing !!
Impossible not to smile
Absolutely brilliant 🙏🏼
Simply amazing. I can't believe I had never heard of them before today. I love, love, love them!
Anne,

Yeah, I would love to see them! They are the type of duo I could listen to over and over again. I wasn't prepared for her to have a great voice since she was Donna Summer's daughter but she blew me away too. God gave them beautiful faces and voices, what a great combination! Thank you !
The Magnolia Channel brought me here. Love their show. Love them!
So, I saw this band on "Live from Daryl's House" and was instantly hooked. Great sound that totally sucks you into the lyric. Love these guys hope they're around a long time.
they are gonna be (and should be) massive
Amanda reminds me a lot of Joy Williams from the Civil Wars. The way she sways shows that the passion for the music oozes out of her!
That's because she's trying to be miss Joy.
Roon Mc They both remind me of The Civil Wars with their harmonies. I was just thinking about that.
Roon Mc A bit different i think, nice though!
This is Magical. Without Question.
Incredible vocals, awesome lyrics, and huge energy. You guys are awesome
This is just so good, glad I found them, thanks to my friend Nick.. We all need a friend like Nick!
First saw them at Firefly, fell in love with their music instantly!
Great duo!!!! Music with substance and heart..
Fabulous, fantastic, phenomenal!
They're great! love the vibe and that guitar, gorgeous
I have never heard these amazing artists before, I liked within the first 15 seconds of the video. Great vibe
See you guys at Firefly Music Festival this Saturday, looking forward to checking you out. Donna Summers daughter can sing, go figure!
I wish these versions of their songs were their album songs. So much better.
They are fun, they are beautiful and they sound so damn good. They are the future and the best music can bring us today. They are the diamonds rising up out the dust.
Beautiful voices, beautiful playing, beautiful songs, beautiful people. FML lol
Love you guys! Great music and great people!
You guys are BEYOND WORDS, INCREDIBLE! PRAISE GOD!
It's a testament to the kind of people they are, when even their "suck it" song is super polite and positive. :P Man, I love them.
Sick music. Really tight vocals.
I love these 2. I listen to their albums over and over.
I love that this is in stereo. So good.
Great job you two!!! Ya'll are truly two of the best people that I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Keep up the good work.
They make me think of The Lone Bellow. Awesome band!
Yes!!
These two sound a lot better live than The Lone Bellow though.
ipodkiller6 I really love these guys. But Lone Bellow's NPR Tiny Desk is truly amazing as well.
Kevin Barrera so much passion in that performance
Why does it matter who is subjectively "better?" Why can't they both be good in their own right?
I think I'm loving in love with those two. Such a amazing performance. Will be buying this CD. Johnnyswin you have made a fan for life out of me.
damn that last song it looked like the guitar was gonna grow wings and he was gonna fly off from sheer joy
I love JS! And hearing them live is even better. They never disappoint!
This is seriously my most favorite band. I love them!
I just love them. So much.
Wow! Great songs and stage presence. Hopefully they capture that energy and rawness on cd.
These guys are awesome!!!
Awsome show! See these guys at Lakewood all the time!
Absolutely love Johnyswim! Cant wait until they come to Louisiana! My kids can't either!
I have listened to them since like 2016 when I was visiting with Jake in San Diego
Amazing! Perfection!
they were dope! can't wait to hear their album
Wow. Two beautiful people with incredible talent. I just love that song "Falling for me."
These guys are amazing!!!
This deserves more views
I randomly heard these guys on Hypemachine a few months ago (I think it was "Paris in June") and promptly bought both their earlier EPs. I loved them both but still was unprepared for how good the full length is. I think this is the shoe in for "best album you haven't heard yet" recommendation to anybody who will listen to me or has to ride somewhere with me in a car. Well done, JohnnySwim!
Love this!
Since they aren't listed,
Aaron Redfield - Drums
Marcus Huber - Bass
Outstanding.
Beautiful!!! Nice Taylor
Not perfect, but infectious. Doing that loop thing today. Great job Johnnyswim!
The strumming on "Diamonds" is really freaking good.
They totally stole that from Coldplay go listen to major minus
Caught them at the Ann Arbor Folk Festival in January. They were great!
Excellent!!!!!!
Best I've ever seen.
2022 their concert was absolutely amazing
Tiny Desk comes through again, big time. They're at The Troubadour in December but I am out of town for all three dates! Bad karma, seriously good set. Best I can do is share to Facebook so maybe some friends can go instead. Already jealous...
Diamonds is killer! What a great duo.
I downloaded their CD and it's great!
