The Village Farmer Meal: Open Fire Cooking Breadfruit and Boiled Taro Leaves🇫🇯

- In this vlog we are out in Joseses farm to help him plant yaqona. Since it was going to be an all day job, Josese and the boys brought the pot to the farm so they could cook lunch in the farm.
The boys and Josese are showing us a dish that village farmers in our village cook to eat when they are out in the farm because this dish is fast to cook, healthy and gives you full stomach.
They show us how they harvest the taro leaves, how they boil it and what else can go in the pot with the taro leaves. To go with it they cook the breadfruit on the open fire as it is breadfruit season in Moturiki Island.

I remember the smell of breadfruit and fish, etc. on an open fire, from my childhood in Fiji. My nana used to boil breadfruit, let it cool, slice it thick and fry it in butter! I spotted one of my favorite vegetables in the market on my last visit - Daruka! It was the last bundle left in the market that day! I had the chef at Vuda Pt. marina cook it for me vakalolo style. When he brought it to me at the bar...everyone around me flocked to it, like starving seagulls! I was lucky enough to retrieve 2 pieces! If Daruka grows in your village farms, I would love to see how it's grown & harvested. as well as the season. I'm so grateful for your Vlogs! The brother's English is so much better than my Fijian! And I learned a trick for cooking Breadfruit!! Although, I have only had occasion to cook 2 times before myself...
Koreans and Japanese do something like that with bamboo, salt & spices as well. Sometimes sealed in the bamboo and roasted in fire to mix with more salt (and/or the ashes) - to flavour grilled meats.
