Did you know about the ongoing battle he had with his speech writers about the “Tear down this wall!” Iine in his Berlin speech? His children and others close to him ay that he was the primary writer of his speeches. The writers and others were afraid if he demanded Gorbachev to tear down the wall, it would create a huge incident that might lead to war. The speech went back and forth at least three times with the writers crossing out the line and Reagan putting it back. Some historians now credit that line and Reagan for ending the Cold War.

As others have already explained, Vietnam was an "unfashionable" war. Many who served were treated in an extremely shabby manner when they got home. They were booed, jeered, cursed, called "baby killers" and even spit on. Really heartbreaking! How awful it must have made them feel when veterans of other wars were celebrated they were villified. Nowadays our people have learned from that experience & all our vets (including the Vietnam soldiers) are treated with the greatest respect & honor, which of course, is how it should be. My brother and I both went to Eureka College in a small town of Eureka, Illinois. We both went there because Ronald Reagan graduated from there. Reagan was President when we attended and came to the college to handout diplomas to the graduating class which happened to be my brothers class. The security on campus that week was crazy, the day he came there where 2 motorcades that came thru the town in different directions (turned out to be decoys), snipers on rooftops and then 5 helicopters the size of houses come in and land on the practice football fields behind the gymnasium which was named after him....awesome thing to see. President Reagan was shot while I was at school, I'll never forget that day when word spread of his assassination attempt.

Vietnam was a war that had a lot of stigma. It was a drafted war and there were many who tried to avoid it. Sentiment at home was that it was a war we shouldn't be fighting, those who chose to go were looked down on. People believed we should have stayed out of it and when it ended we had nothing to show for it, most consider it a political war. It still has a stigma about it today, the war that should not have been fought.
Regan like many made mistakes, but you can always tell who are the ones who tried to go against those trying to destroy our country. They get shot, like Lincoln, like Kennedy, like Regan (although he survived), and I worry about that in today's world as well.

In regard to your question about Vietnam: the short version is that our involvement in the war was controversial, and as a result there were many protests - the war was not unanimously understood as necessary as WW2 may have been; for instance. As such, many of the soldiers returning home were treated absolutely horribly. Veterans had items and food thrown at them, or stepped back onto home soil with very little welcome. They got called awful names and dragged through the mud. On top of that we had politicians playing political games and a subpar support system for those vets. That's why Reagan is referring to the fact that we didn't support them in the same way.

Even though those events were important, Memorial Day was always the most important day in our family because my dad was a survivor of the Battle of Peleilu in the South Pacific during WWII. He was wounded and received the Purple Heart, but thankfully he survived. Many of his Brothers in Arms did not survive. 1600 Americans were killed on the island of Peleliu during that battle. Having said that, the worst enemy ALL Americans face today, in my opinion, is division in our country. We all have our own beliefs, and that's great!! That's what the country is built on! But if we can't find some areas of common ground and present a truly united front to the world, we're in a weak position to defend ourselves against the forces that would like to destroy us. And, perhaps even more importantly, if we refuse to do the hard work of seeking out and tenaciously upholding those basic principles of democracy that bind us together rather than tear us apart, our great country is in grave danger of being destroyed from within.
I don't want either of those results, and I know you don't either. It's clear that the future of the country is important to you, as it well should be.

  • @leahmollytheblindcatnordee3586

I really appreciate your respect and willingness to learn about a place like the US. Thank you.
I have to say that I have always appreciated President Reagan because he was very articulate and stood by what he said.. He was President for 8 years and always seemed to say something that I agreed with. As others have said, he had originally been an actor, then 2 term governor of California, then President.
The Vietnam war was something that did divide many here and I remember it well because I graduated right in the middle of it.. My cousins (same age as myself) and my neighbor went there. My one cousin recently passed away partially due to health problems he developed from being in an area where "Agent Orange" (a herbicide used to kill vegetation) was sprayed into an area where he was. The product was banned in1971. My other cousin is now displaying symptoms that may have a similar cause. My neighbor was a Marine and died last year for undisclosed reasons.

President Reagan was called the Great Communicator because of his ability to deliver great speeches and style. You should check out his first inaugural speech, I was 10 when we watched it on TV in 1981. I personally can still remember many pieces of that speech to this day, especially when he talked about American Heroes. Another great speech of his was from the anniversary of D-Day in 1984 at the cliffs of Point Dehoc. Great review.

One of our greatest Presidents ever. He was a Hollywood actor. He knew how to speak to the moment. He was President during the US USSR cold war. His policy's destroyed the evil soviet union. When he was reelected as President in 1984 he won 49 of 50 states (I do not believe that will ever happen again). God Bless America on our special day. God bless our fallen hero's.

Ronald Reagan was underestimated as a political force, because of his background as an actor and because he was perceived as being extremely far right. The 70s as a whole, beginning with the Vietnam War, and ending with the Iran hostage crisis, completely discredited establishment institutions and politicians. The inability of the politics to adjust to the economic realities of stagflation and Carter's inability to project confidence (as well as to end the hostage crisis) created an opening for Reagan in 1980. The economy improved massively by the mid 1980s, and just a couple of months after he left office, the Communist block started to implode and collapse. Reagan was also an inspirational leader and was known as the "Great Communicator". For many in the US Reagan is the "last great President". No one has come close to winning the Presidency by as much as Reagan did in 1984 since that election (58%-40% on the PV and 49 out of 50 States in the EC). Today, there are critics of Reagan's policies when it comes to issues like the Aids pandemic and his approach to the Apartheid regime in South Africa (Reagan's mindset was Cold War centric and South Africa was anti-communist). However, Reagan remains a top ten President on most lists of successful Presidents, sometimes even in the top 5.

Ronald Reagan was a good President. My first time voting for President, I voted for Reagan in 1984 when I was 20 years old. When he spoke of the soldiers of Vietnam not having support of their country he was right. America entered the Vietnam war during the time in our country in the late 1960’s when the country was dealing with the new counter culture. There were many people who felt like we didn’t have a reason to go to war. There were many young people who began protesting the war and we had young people who were living their lives as hippies doing drugs and living their lives very differently than any generation before them. So when the Vietnam Vets came home they were met with anger and disgust instead of being thanked for their service. There was a lot more to that, but it’s a generalization of what happened to the Vietnam Vets.

Great speeches from a visionary. It was a great pity but the country was divided on the rightness and wisdom of the Vietnam war. To add to it self-righteous college students looked down on the largely lower class soldiers. One good thing is that the next generation learned to respect the soldiers and separating them from the policies. We seem to need to learn that again.

“Last full measure of devotion” is Reagan quoting Lincoln’s Gettysburg address. I miss having a president who loves our country 😭
Thank you for sharing this with us. My fellow Americans and I owe such a debt to all the fallen from the Colonials to those sacrificed in the proxy wars.
7:30 Vietnam was a very unpopular war… it was essentially America’s 2nd “proxy” war in the 20th century that was police action without a formal declaration of war from congress. Americans do not like undeclared wars.

Reagan was a very popular President in the USand my husband and I happily voted for him. I was in college during the Vietnam War and so angry the way some left wing radicals would spit on soldiers came home from the war. President Lyndon Johnson listened to so many protestors and did not adequately support the soldiers in terms of weapons, strategy. You don’t send young men to War and not support them. I have to say my husband and I traveled to Europe in the 1980,s and so many Europeans didn’t hesitate to criticize Reagan to us. I was angry, but we said nothing! My husband and I were history majors. Reagan was a great President, unlike our current 2 choices in our upcoming election. God bless our soldiers!

(e.g., he commanded Mr Gorbachev to tear down this wall.) He was criticized like all our presidents are, but he was respected the world over. 🇺🇸🫡
