  • Six Flags Over Texas has begun their summertime operations, opening daily until they close on Tuesdays beginning later in the month. Summer at the park looks a little different with a lack of events and no entertainment offerings during weekdays. Food prices, along with a surcharge, continue to increase while quality suffers. Join us for an honest look at Six Flags Over Texas' current situation, along with construction updates for this year's planned ride openings.

    I'm an avid vlogger of my local Six Flags park - and I try to be a pretty positive-spin guy on what is happening in the park, but Six Flags isn't making it easy lately, so I appreciate a lot of the honesty in this video. You guys are not alone in DFW.

    If you're fine with not eating at the park, it's wonderful. Went there yesterday with my BF and on top of every ride being a walk-on, I had an 8-hour stay and got 19 coaster rides and rode 2 darkrides for $30 a person. I remember in 2016 thinking Cedar Point was insane for $7 hot dogs at TTD, but yesterday I saw a single slice of pizza for $17 and a $20 burger under the same roof. Hungry, but not that hungry.

    I bought a pass this year and I’ve gone three weeks in a row. Before that it had been three years, the drop off in the guest experience in just that amount of time is staggering. I’m also under the impression the last park president (who was a very good president and cared a lot about this park) was forced out and the joker they have in now I put 100% of the blame on why the park has declined. I get company wide budget stuff, but there’s no excuse for the big decline. I still love going here, I’m glad I got the dining pass, I’m praying that Cedar Fair will give this park love and get rid of the new park president.

    I have so many good memories of being with my daughter at Six Flags over Texas. We always had Season passes. The parking lot would be packed. People everywhere. We would have lunch at Gator McGee's. You could buy a hamburger then go to the fixin's bar where you could load up on tomatoes, pickles, lettuce. Our burgers would be 6 inches tall. Never missed Arania's Nightmare during Fright Fest. Great memories.
    This really makes me sad.

    It is an absolute shame that Six Flags has let what should be its flagship park run itself down. It wasn't the best park in the world when I was growing up in the late 90's, but it at least exciting, fresh, and had stuff to do.
    Now that I'm older and travel a bit more, I've been to places like Silver Dollar City and Dollywood, and these places blow the Six Flags experience out of the water. It floors me that with all the talent in Metroplex schools that we cant have at least one revue show, or at least a couple of areas to have some simple entertainment. Why are they even keeping the Southern Palace and other buildings around if they've given up? And speaking of the other parks: the two that I mentioned had much better quality food at half the price. I had a fantastic Hot Chicken Sandwich with fries and a coke at Dollywood for $10, and they didn't charge me $1.50 for the pleasure of ordering it. That surcharge for food is one of the biggest "go take a hike" things I've ever seen.
    I've wondered with the beaten down nature of the park if they are just waiting out the lease to sell it and develop it into either a stand alone park, or to just make way for apartments and warehouses. Its sad to think about (and would have been shocking to even mention just ten or twenty years ago), but it's clear that Six Flags just doesnt care about SFoT. I really hope that isnt the case, but mergers usually mean cuts, and if this is the way they treat the park, then it just might mean its time.

    Thank you for this critical recap of your visit. The park really is in terrible shape and is absolutely heartbreaking and unacceptable. I can only hope that things can still get better, because the lack of crowds and low waits are just a product of a park that is a shell of itself. That wait time board was pitful, everything looked dirty and worn down, and the prices are even higher than Disney for food. I see so many things that are simple fixes.

  • @xtremejay2000
    @xtremejay2000 Před měsícem +7

    At the start of may I went on a first time trip to Cedar Point. Without a doubt the BEST theme park experience I ever had and that was with one day being cold and rainy all day. The experience was second to none. Efficient ride operation and line management led to short wait times. They had staff EVERYWHERE and they were friendly and knowledgeable. Every restaurant was actually open (what a concept). the Food itself?, great! Their food pass lets you eat every 90 mins and get a drink every 15. I have been so used to SFOT that I had no idea theme parks could be run this well. There was not a single issue I had other than barely being able to walk by day 3. While I was there was when I heard about the merger with Six Flags and man I hope Cedar point does some MAJOR housecleaning of executives at Six Flags. It will take time to essentially teach SF how to operate a park but this is one of the few times I am actually looking forward to one of these corporate merger/buy outs.

    With the upcoming merger w/ Cedar Fair. I'm hoping we start seeing some serious money and improved management pumped into this and Hurricane Harbor across I-30. The latter I went to a suburb "Hawaiian" waterpark that was built so much better with both shade and ground water cooling, heck id love them to take a "Bahn" approach to its redesign with updated rides/slides/lazy river. On SFOT, what id give to see them adapt a food festival event similar to Boysenberry Festival at Knotts or even start offering better sit down food options like Mrs. Knotts.

    It truly makes me disappointed with all these things SFOT is doing. I usually try my best to be positive but it’s getting rough for that. $17 for fries (which they actually switched the waffle fries to normal fries meaning portions has dropped and prices increased), 3 rides being delayed or cancelled consecutively, Aquaman, el rio lento, these 2 rides. Weird decisions like changing historic attractions for Dinos, no shows. Like SFFT is thriving and communicates so I don’t get why it’s so difficult for SFOT to do good it clearly can happen we saw it when Ron McKenzie was in charge. But anyways that’s my rant I want to see some changes I care for my home park

    I'm one of the biggest cheerleaders of Six Flags, but they sure are making things difficult. That surcharge for all purchases cannot be justified. Just raise the prices. People don't like tack-on fees like that. Just out of principle, I'm sure many people choose to not make a purchase just because of it. I know I've done that with many other things. Recently, I almost purchased a ticket for a multi-day sporting event for $275 plus a $90 "convenience fee". If I saw the total price of $365, I would have bought it. But with how they did that, I chose not to purchase it, and I'll now just watch it on TV. We as consumers need to take a stand on those things.

  • @winningfreak1
    @winningfreak1 Před měsícem +11

    This park is in a dire state. For where it's located, the lack of competition in the DFW area for amusement parks (atleast until that new Universal park opens) this park should be doing amazing.
    The lack of shows of any kind is sad. Why is there no interest/development for shows? The old Batman Stunt show used to be extremely popular. How about a summer concert series? Dance off? something, anything really. Not everyone is into thrill rides and coasters (although I love em!)
    The food options just suck. The cheapest food that Six Flags can get their hands on and charge INSANE prices. This isn't new, but this drives away people. I'm sorry but $80 for 4 of those cheese burger baskets aint it. JB's Smokehouse years ago was awesome. Now it's been cheaped out. Johnny Rockets is in shambles and honestly all the food service area's I often wonder how they pass any health inspections.
    The blown deadlines for the new attractions should come as no surprise. Heck we waited 4 years for Aquaman...
    My biggest issue with SFOT was almost always the staff. A bunch of teens who didn't seem to really care to be there. Infact I've often gotten the feeling they would rather be doing almost anything else.
    I would love to have the chance to manage this park. Give me 5 years and a decent budget and I think I could have this place shining once again.
    The park has so much going for it. The location, a good theme park enthusiast fanbase in the DFW community, favorable operating weather almost year-round. But it's horribly mismanaged and at this point, really needs major investment. And not just a new coaster.

      Completely agree with this 100%. This park is Trash (now) and honestly always have been for a long time, and I don't understand the praise that the park gets by the locals. Its all due to like you said, the lack of competition. I am not the customer that is targeted for the new Universal Kids park, but I look forward to visiting for a better quality park, service, food and rides (if there is some for me to ride ha). Hopefully the locals will see that to.
      Like you said, give me a couple years to manage the park and it will be great. (RCT experience).
      Definitely we need the management to be gutted to a staff that cares. A staff with a long list of working in the industry. This park as the potential to be great.

      I grew up going to SFoT at least once a summer with my family. That was in the 1970’s and early 1980’s, and it was a great place then. They’d have fairly big entertainers play at the amphitheater during the summer nights, and it was fun to watch them while eating a ‘Pink Thing’ (IYKYK)! I’ve lived close to San Antonio my whole life, so when SFFT and Sea World opened there, we stopped making the pilgrimage to SFoT. The last time I went there was in 1995, and even back then the experience at SFoT was notably worse than what I’d seen before. Especially when compared to SFFT. The whole vibe at the park was not enjoyable. There were guests on the train spitting on people below when the train went over a walkway…& not just one person was doing that & I saw that happen a couple of times that day. Things like peeling paint & lack of keeping up with the landscaping was also very noticeable. But the biggest kicker that day was when my wife and I were waiting in a long outdoor que, in the heat, I stepped approximately 10 feet away from where we were in the line and bought my wife a bottled water because the heat was getting to her. There was no line to buy the water, and it literally took me less than 15 to 20 seconds to do so, and the line hadn’t moved an inch. Well, here comes an employee who tells me that I had to now go to the back of the line since I had, technically, gotten out of line. I was calm and explained that I wasn’t ‘line jumping’ or anything close to that. I told them that my wife was getting over heated, and the kiosk where I’d bought the water was almost in arms reach to where we were standing in the non-moving que. Didn’t matter to them at all, and so we both left the line & the park vowing to never go back. Which we haven’t, and won’t. Anyway, that’s just my experience with SFoT. But of course, if you have staff that treat customers like that, and now obviously they’re also giving customers less with no shows, you’re going to have less customers.

    Summers are brutal in Texas and we used to wait until around 5:00pm to go to the park so that we could get in when it’s past the heat of the day and enjoy the rides in the evening when it’s tolerable. They essentially killed that. They open so late that by 11:00am, it already pretty hot. We found ourselves rarely going last summer because of their reduced hours. It’s hard to enjoy our favorite coasters when we are getting sick from the heat and g-forces. We went from going weekly to 3 or 4 times last summer. We most times spent money in the park when we went. It wasn’t just utilizing our passes. We also used our passes to go to Fiesta Texas until they took that perk away. Another park we would spend money at while there. We were always bringing friends and family with us. A lot of whom would end up buying a pass and/or food and merch. Now they are getting nothing off of us. Not even pass money.
    I really hope that when the merger happens, things turn around.

    I'm glad you were honest with your sentiments about what you saw. I've been kind of thinking the same thing The last few times I went to this park, I grew up with AstroWorld, and it was outright owned by Six flags but started a downward spiral in the '90s. Even so, no one ever thought it would close. But from what I'm seeing at this Park it wouldn't shock me to hear that they are going to decide to close it. The fact that there are no shows, and there's that theater along the railroad that doesn't look like it's ever going to open again. Very telling. They got rid of the taxis to put in a dinosaur ride?. That's pathetic, dinosaurs are so 20 years ago. And these dinosaurs look kind of lame, nothing near the quality of a universal Park Dinosaur. You really hit the nail on the head though with the food, there is no way someone should be paying anywhere close to 20 bucks for a lousy burger. And I know Cedar Fair is expensive too, but their food is better,. And their ride-ups are better, and their Parks look nicer. Worlds of fun is considered one of the worst Cedar Fair parks, and it is in a class above Six flags over Texas. I'm always mesmerized by the picnic area, since I grew up with AstroWorld which had a really bad picnic area, I'd love to know the story about the picnic area at Six flags over Texas. Looks like it used to be amazing and now it's a total dump.

    I like the honest review. Without sounding too much like an apologist for SFOT, I will add a couple of notes as I was there the same day you were. There was a parking attendant for preferred parking, and we got there two hours after you did. There was someone manning the overflow preferred parking, but let me in the primary because I told them I saw some open spots.
    My son’s burgers always come with veggies. (I have to pick them off. 😂) And you can always ask for condiments. But I don’t like those burgers too much. Especially plain and dry!
    Also, I was told the Southern Palace is being used to stage some behind the scenes construction. And shows will return in September. But man, I really like cooling off in there.
    That WAS a karaoke stage someone was working the mic that afternoon. But it looks trashy. They should at least put up a backdrop!
    Im glad you saw two boats on Aqua-man because it I think it was back down to one later.
    Oh…and Johnny Rockets was just repainted and updated inside. Awing should be back soon. I have high hopes for SFOT. I see the President out a lot walking and picking up trash. I’m hopeful next year will be bring something big!

    I've been consistently disappointed with SFOT for a while now. I don't buy their excuses. I went regularly during the years they were going through bankruptcy and the park was no where near as bad as it is now. They haven't built a major ground up roller coaster since Titan and that was almost 25 years ago. The new Gotham city section is an asphalt wasteland with some rides slapped on it with no care for presentation. The food pricing is ridiculous, which it always has been, but that surcharge and the excuse they're giving to tag it on pissed me off so bad i left the line I had been waiting in for 30 minutes. I'm not paying $13 for some cold curly fries plus a grievance fee that they're blaming their employees for. I have some real concern whats to come if leadership doesn't change. A lot of their major rides like Mr.Freeze are coming close to the end of their service life, and I suspect they will either tear them down and not replace them or go with an inferior replacement. If there is one thing you can count on with Six Flags, it's for them to make the worst decisions possible.

    Hopefully, with the merger of Cedar Fair, they can add cooked fresh buffet style restaurants like some CedarFair parks offer. The quality of Six flags has been down because of poor leadership and some bad park managers.

    • @ATARIMAN
      @ATARIMAN Před měsícem +1

      Cedar Fair should really think twice before they go through with this merger. Six flags brings very little to the table, and I can't believe they are going to retain the Six flags name for the main reason being that it's not viewed as quality anymore. I'm basing this off of the fact that Six flags destroyed AstroWorld, and has gotten Six flags over Texas down to six operating days a week during the summer, in fronti er your city is down to five operating days per week. That's just terrible. Also, I know people love Fiesta. But opening up a DC themed area ?that's not even a real theme. Is it supposed to be Gotham, or metropolis going on? No, it's DC themed so it's really just like a boardwalk with cheap signs placed that have DC characters on them. It's really bad.

    Anyone that goes to Six Flags in Arlington in the peak of the summer is crazy. It is way too freakin hot, most ques are outdoors, no way. I live near Dallas, we only go to Six Flags in the fall or Spring break time or even May. Hurricane Harbor is for the summer. With that being said, we haven’t been to Six Flags since pre pandemic.

    Is it normal for the place to be that empty? In the 90s my girlfriend and I got season passes and every time we'd go (always weekdays) it was super crowded. Maybe we just chose the wrong days, but you'd think that with the metro area probably doubling in population since then, it would always be packed.

      @AmusementSource  Před 15 dny +1

      I've seen some mid-2000s summers that weren't super busy during the week, but it does feel like attendance, on average, is on the lower end. There are some weekend days or special event days that pack out still.

    You have to ask for lettuce, onion, tomato, pickle, ketchup, mustard and barbeque sauce but they do have them. However even with all that I do agree that burger isn't worth it. The Johnny Rockets burger is slightly smaller but 100% better than the All American Grill burger.

      @@AmusementSource yeah, honestly All American Grill is my least favorite food option in the park. I really like those rice bowls but as you pointed out they aren't always open. I've wanted to try a cheesesteak from Etienne's but they've never been open when I've been in the park. Hopefully they bring back the loaded potatoes and soup bread bowls they had last year for Holiday in the Park, those were the best things I've had at Six Flags

    SFOT looks like it’s just given up. I’m not sure what’s going to happen with it, but they either need to sell it to someone that can rebrand, spend some money to refresh it, and get people coming back and excited about going, or make a real effort to advertise, run some specials, and get butts back in seats so they can afford to do some good things. I used to love it, but man is it depressing.
    I’m a Universal Orlando pass holder now … and I drive my SFOT every day on my way to work! It’s right down to road and I have no real desire to go anymore. The food costs … the parking … the way it looks run down … it’s just so sad.

    He has been adding nothing but kiddie attractions. No rollar coasters, nothing interesting. He needs to do more, because arguably the best six flags park is just 4 hours away and has gotten a B and M dive coaster and a bunch of great family rides.
    That was the last two years of additions. And you know what SFOT added?
    A dark ride that’s falling apart and more kiddie attractions
