The Marian antiphon ‘Ave Regina Caelorum’ is one of four prayers used at the close of compline, a prayer at the end of the day. The prayer expresses admiration, honor and praise for the Virgin Mary as a powerful intercessor who brought Christ into the world. Originally found among manuscripts as old as the twelfth century, the prayer was since institutionalized for regular use for over half a millennium.
Composer Kenneth Tay begins his arrangement of this timeless, beautiful prayer with a melodious and warm theme with two parts, before deftly weaving the song into a six-part harmony at “Super
omnes speciosa”, and closes the composition quietly with a return to the opening theme.
