"Востани Сербіє" ("Arise, Serbia"; Serbian Latin: Vostani Serbije), also known as "Песна на инсурекцију Сербијанов" ("A poem on the insurrection of the Serbs"; Serbian Cyrillic: Pesna na insurekciju Serbijanov), is a Serbian patriotic song, originally a poem written by Dositej Obradović (1739-1811), published in Vienna in 1804, "dedicated to Serbia and her brave warriors and sons and to their leader Georgije Petrović" at the beginning of the First Serbian Uprising that transformed into the Serbian Revolution against the Ottoman Empire. Obradović, delighted, he happily and sincerely greeted the Serb uprising with this special, patriotic poem. Obradović extensively used the concept of "Mother Serbia" in his works, including this poem. Of his poems, Vostani Serbije is the most patriotic. In it, he calls on a new Serbia, with overtones of memory on the Serbian Empire which had been long gone. Obradović then became the first Minister of Education of Revolutionary Serbia. It was also the national anthem of the Principality of Serbia.
It is one of the best known patriotic songs in the country, and for some time it was considered as a potential national anthem following the replacement of the old Yugoslav anthem Hej Sloveni following the break-up of Yugoslavia. The song was set to music written by Vartkes Baronijan, Z. Vauda and Ljuba Manasijević.

This song was written in Slavonic-Serbian, which was the literary language of the time. This was the period of the First Serbian Uprising against Ottoman rule led by Karađorđe Petrović. Since this is before the reformation of the writing system by Vuk Karadžić, which took place a couple of decades later, the language is a bit different from modern Serbian, while still mostly understandable.
Written by one of the most prominent Serbs at the time, Dositej Obradović, the song is supportive of the Serbian struggle for freedom and enlightenment.

Ova je za mene najbolja verzija pesme. Nemam mnogo protiv druge verzije, samo ta melodija ne čini za himnu, dok ova melodija tako tera čoveka da ustane i da peva ponosnije i jače, a još ima i stih "i serblje vozbudi", što mnogo nama treba u svako doba ali najviše sad nam je najprotrebnije da to čujemo i pevamo. Kad bi bilo izbora između dve verzije, za ovu bih se opredelio.

IDK, I'm a fan of Bože Pravde too, especially since it's actually in Serbian, as opposed to the unstandardized mess of Serbian with randomly thrown in Russian words that was Slavonic-Serbian but yes, it is beautiful.
I like how I understand everything being sung, but if I didn't learn other slavic languages I'd be so confused by the subtitles. Crazy how much our language has changed in like 150 years...

Great song, and great video, but there are some letters that didn't exist when this song was written, like "њ" or "ћ". "Њ" is a combination of 2 letters "н" and "ь" (нь). Ћ is made from "ч" and "ь" (чь).
Dositej Obradovic's lyrics can stir the soul of every true Serb! This anthem was written by the great Enlightener when Karadjordje freed one section of Serbia from the clutches of the Ottoman Turks. However, it took the Second Serbian Uprising under Milos Obrenovic to gain more freedom on a gradual piecemeal basis. Unfortunately, Serbia has yet to redeem all its territories (Bosnia Hercegovina and Montenegro). I doubt that will happen in my lifetime, knowing how the Anglo-American Alliance works. My faith is in the hands of Serbs who have proven themselves to be leaders agianst the oppressor. I hope that they are not all dead and -- if they are -- may the dead come to life and haunt them!

Old script before Vuk was better because it looked better. Also it more vowels and it‘s kinda cursed to hear “serbije“ instead of srbije. Or chernaya instead of crna.
This is not literary Serbian language. It is Slavo-Serbian. Serbs don't speak like this. But it is nice.

@@user-pn7jz9vr2z upravo je sve tako svi pravoslavni slaveni nemaju slovo j ono nam je nametnuto od vuka ono se samo izgovara a ne pise se ć isto pravoslavni slaveni se prezivaju ič samo na kirilici ИЧ ima jos tu mnogo stavki nisu nam turci unistili jezik za 500 god a vuk je uspeo za 15 godina ubacio turske imenice recenice i glagole ono bugari koji dolaze iz azije imaju vise staroslavenskih reci od nas jastuk ajde i jos mnogo toga na ruskom podglavnik jasno i precizno na sta se misli ajde/idemo idemo na ruskom, bugarskom
i da kazem mislim da vuk nije napravio cirilicu vec neki tip on je samo sproveo dosta ovih reci koje nisam razumeo na google translate automatski ih prebacuje na makedonski i bugarski

Not really. At the time the song was written more then 50% of Bosnian population were Serbs. Today 34% of population of Bosnia are Serbs. One half of Bosnian territory is autonomous Serbian republic called Republic of Srpska, so this did age well actually. The only reason this territory doesn't join Serbia is because that is against western interests. They are doing everything in their power to stop this from happening.
