Those aren't the wings of slain Rathalos. Those are the wings from Rathalos that have aged to the point where they turn into Lao Shan Lung and shed their wings, that's why they're so big.

Rathalos is King of the Skies because the Raths have successfully propagated more territory than any other flying wyvern. Humans aren't the strongest or fastest creatures on the planet, but we have successfully propagated into more areas which allowed us to evolve to the point where we are the dominant species.
Plus if one includes subspecies, variants, deviants, etc. Rathalos are among the strongest wyverns.

People complain about too many Rath variants in the games. While the complaint is understandable, the sheer amount of Raths in every game is also lore accurate.
Nono, folks... Rathalos is King of the skies because it was discovered amd classified as such BEFORE all the other, faster, stronger Flying Wyverns... at that time, they only knew about 3, And Rathalos is stronger than Rathian or Yian Garuga... A scientifically Valid theory. It's the sane reason Tyrannosaurus Rex is called as such, despite us now knowing their were larger, stronger Dinosaurs...
The Rathalos is their world's T-Rex.
To add to this, if we compare rathalos to Seregios and Astalos, Rathalos still has the most mass proportionally to agility. Sure he may be HARASSED by Seregios and Astalos, but he beats out Astalos in power and durability (Astalos is mostly chitin and has transparent wings) and has the fire power to stoke out Seregios. He may not be the fastest or destructive, but he still does beat out his competition.
I'm not sure why intense propagation would give them the title "King Of The Skies" though? "King" pretty specifically implies dominion, not just... Crowding it. Also, it's not like they live in the skies, they just fly decently often, but not really meaningfully more so than other large flying monsters, as far as we can tell. Like, rats are super successful in the same ways, but I'm not sure anybody would really give them the title "Kings Of The Earth," because that's just not what people tend to be implying by those choice of words. "King" pretty heavily implies singularly imposing, so if they would have that title from just propagation, it would make sense to call them "Peasants Of The Skies" then if they get the title because of the number of them all over the place.
Plus, they aren't even that propagated of a species for M.H. standards - they basically never get found in deserts, wetlands, or cold regions, and pretty rarely in tropic regions, all of which make up a huge amount of the M.H. world, they're basically just in temperate sparse forests and grasslands and then volcanic regions. Rathian live in a way broader range than Rathalos, and, yes, they are the same species, but are separately named creatures with separate titles. Not to mentioned things like Seregios, which specifically did a mass invasion of previously non-native territories and biomes quite rapidly, and successfully, too successfully, even, which is the whole point of Four U. And then there are Bazel, which also have a way wider regular range, and are also more devastating. And then Tigrex, while it cannot fly, it can propagate way wider and be a bigger force in the local ecosystem, so... Why does that not "King Of The Land" then?
This is the problem of trying to twist some meaning out of a thing that way made incredibly early in a series that has expanded a bunch since then. The authors just literally could not account for everything back then, and if they made sure not to contradict anything they said in old things, it would severely limit their options going forwards. So it'd be best to just view it like that, both Meta-textually and within the text itself - the creators didn't know any better, and then just use that same logic in-universe, the people who gave Rathalos that title hadn't seen a bunch of the other monsters or gotten a good study on the ecology when they decided to title it, since things like that happen in the real world all the time too. A lot of M.H. "lore" and ecology can only logically be chalked up to the denizens of the world not having a lot of wide access to good quality information in general.
Also, yeah, humans aren't the strongest or fastest... Naturally. But we are, now, thanks to our technology, because what we are - as far as we can tell - is smartest, which lead to tool creation and use, and insane levels of learning pattern recognition and inference, which let us exploit our environments the best, so we kind of were basically already on track to be this dominant before we propagated so wildly. We didn't evolve to be dominant because we propagated, you got it backwards, we propagated because we evolved to dominate.
Funny enough, Rathalos might have a similar reason for being so wide-spread as humans - really good nurture to make sure the survival rate of the young is quite high thanks to lots of investment. The Rath pair is the only monster we hear and see extensively guard their nests and ensure the safety of the young, as both parents engage in it, quite intently. Rathian guard the nest itself closely, and Rathalos are said to patrol their territory for threats from the sky, and even a much more potent monster would still have a hard time dealing with a Rathalos and Rathian at the same time. Even if an Astalos or Seregios or Bazel could take on a Rathalos themselves, getting in a fight with the duo would be much to dangerous for most things to want to risk - especially thanks to poison. A Seregios may be swift enough to go snatch a sneaky egg from the nest or something, but it wouldn't be able to stay to get its fill with the Rathian right on the nest. A Bazel could easily just carpet the nest in explosions, but a Rathalos could quite easily knock it off track and deter it from trying to stay to do it, let alone get in position in the first place.
Their power is in being a pair of protective parents, and their titles make more sense when viewed through that lens of their roles in guarding a nest together. King Of The Skies and Queen Of The Land. Their kingdom is their nest.

Cotton's giant corn bizarrely backs up a theory an old friend of mine had: that the humans of Monster Hunter are only the size of Hobbits.
According to him, it's always just been assumed MH humans are the same size we are, and that's our measure for scale across the franchise, but the physics of Monster Hunter only makes sense if humans in that world are only a meter tall. Kind of a funny thing to get hung up on given the other, more blatantly fantastical parts of the setting, but it's a fun thought experiment the corn reminded me of.
Capcom has a lot of explaining to do for the sudden disappearance of Aptonoths in the recent mainline MH games.

You guys definitely need to play around with monstie element changing this playthrough, it'd make some awesome custom monsters (and hopefully bring it into the light so it's brought back in stories 3)

Speaking of putting Navirou in normal monster hunter: Back when MHGU was added to the switch, there was a feature added to the 3DS to allow you to transfer your progress to the switch version. I did this some time after playing Monster Hunter Stories, and it turns out that you get a Navirou set for your Palico if you have MHS save data, so I had the option to turn my Palico into Navirou in MHGU, so close to getting him in the mainline games.
I wouldn't mind another play-through of this game

It’s so amazing to see you guys play through this again. I’m currently getting it downloaded on my switch so I can delete it from my phone. It’s gonna be so much better playing through this game on a bigger screen.
I mean giraffes being more closely related to Cows explains why the giraffe Fruit is an Ushi-Ushi(Cow-Cow) model, though I still want to see a Mythical variant of it.
Also Fun Fact there are two Mythical Creatures that are just a giraffe, one is the Kirin, the other is the Questing Beast, which I find amusing

In retrospect I think the Monster Hunter Stories anime is probably one of the better video game adaptation anime. Most of the time, when adapting games, they are taking a 80+ hours of content and story game and condensing it into, at most, 52 half hour episodes, as a result the episodes can get a little rushed and a lot can get missed. Prime example of this is most of the Persona adaptations. I like how in the MHS anime they used the format to add content that takes place before the first section of the game, giving more time to develop Cheval, Lute and the other characters in the village. It makes when the Nargacuga attacks much more impactful and you empathize with Cheval over his journey a bit more then in the game which RUSHES through those parts very quickly. You can also tell most people would agree as most of the DLC was content that was added on to the anime. The only other instance where I saw a anime adaptation, kind of the content of the game, was when the sequel game to Gungrave game was a sequel to the anime rather then a sequel to the story of the original game.
