I have to say, not as someone who liked her policies, it was an unceremonial way for a sitting Prime Minister to be deposed when she hadn't been defeated, not in elections anyway
On this very day we were on a school art trip to the Tate Gallery and we went through Westminster too. When the Art teacher got us all back onto the coach on the Embankment, she announced Thatcher had resigned and the entire coach load of 15yr olds cheered
When i was in high school she was rising to power. My father and uncle spoke highly of her more than once. Her message and personality reached as far as Texas. To this day i think she was the most important PM since Mr Churchill. I admire her to this very day.
Thatcher was a complex women, puzzling about some of her political decisions: 1. Right to buy council houses 2. Deregulation of buses She was controversial and a hard woman who never listened, and thick-skind.
I was travelling to work by bus when news of The Ironing Lady's resignation came on the radio. Everyone - including - the driver cheered. Her departure was not before time.
I don't suppose anyone knows the exact timeslot this extended bulletin went out in? I mean I know it's the 6'oclock news, but I note from the viewing figures for this week that CBBC was shunted over to BBC2, which suggests emergency news coverage took over on BBC1, although Neighbours seems to appear on BBC1 as normal, and TOTP and Birds were still broadcast later that night (can't tell if Tomorrow's World survived or not as it did not rate in the week's tables). I also can't see this bulletin on the viewing figures, unless the fairly high viewing figure of 12.24m, which is shown for Tues, was actually for this and they made an error when publishing the figures, or unless this programme appeared in the ratings as 'Leadership Special' with no particular day shown and a figure of 9.27m. I'd also be interested to know what changes were made to ITV's schedules o this day if anyone knows.
i think she was a powerful eccentric - don t get me wrong i never liked her in my youth - but i don t think she was a hypocrite or a sell out which is the epithet i would give to a lot of modern politicians - i think that s our fault
hesltine hated thatcher before then. it was hardly betrayal. thatcher betrayed the working class by lying to them about winter of discontent and making it worse
Why couldn't she be permanently in power until the day She died, she was infinitely greater than anyone who came before Her, or at least since Churchill, and everyone after.
Evan Bernard She did better than anyone else in that house could. Without her, the trade unions would still hold the power to bring Britain to a standstill and inflation would still be extremely high. She also modernised and improved the British economy by shutting down loss-making manufacturing businesses and pushed Britain into a more finance and services focus. Her deregulation of the financial sector and belief in a free market allowed the British economy to thrive and her influence still affects policies put forward today. If that doesn’t sum up a great Prime Minister, then I don’t know what will.
Zoe Last lol, that is just the way I recorded it onto VHS at the time. Trying to stop and start recording when the relevant items were on was always fun. Remember those days?
+Zoe Last That's probably because it was edited at the time of transmission, by hitting the "pause" button on the VCR during recording, so just recording bits of a TV broadcast not knowing whether an interesting bit is coming up or not.
Imagine introducing internment and putting iniciont people into prison without a trail and taking liberties away from innocent family's...oh yes she was a real art of work ..
I agree gyrovague, good riddance indeed. 2013 was a happy, fantastic and memorable year indeed, the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, William and Kate's baby George, and Thatchers death, that made my year complete !! I bet as soon as she entered hell she shook hands with the Devil and danced with Saddam Hussein, and that's the polite clean version !!
A very sad day. The PM resigned 2 months before the Gulf War and 6 months before the Croatian Conflict.......
Proper news readers no fluff and gimmicks

A great PM she was and a great woman.
Dreadful person.
The only Prime Ministers that have done more harm to the country in my lifetime have been Johnson and Truss.
Thanks for uploading this very important news episode in full
R. I. P Peter Sissons.

U know he was from Toxteth Liverpool RIP brother
A truly great leader who led with conviction and passion. What modern Britain needs again ❤
I'm no conservative but her musings on Europe were bang on the money.

No respect there then! mrs thatcher was the greatest leader since Winston Churchill
@@davidhodgson9050 Respect for the devil? no chance
@@lvpvsmalvm522 Well said.
I remember when she resigned good riddance to bad rubbish she was so vile.
You sound like a bunch of feeble minded sheep
She was worth a billion of Boris today!!
*32 years ago today!*
1:55 It struck me funny, how Douglas Hurd and John Major were pulling the exact same expression.
Spitting Image used to always make fun of them looking and sounding the same, making them speak at the same time, move in unison, etc..

Consequential, yes, but for all the wrong reasons. Nothing admirable about her egregious policies.

No doubt you worked in a place with slack jawed morons.
The day our prayers were answered
Oh how we celebrated that day!
I remember the happy day well. I walked into a maths class late, and someone said, "She's resigned." I said, "Who?"
According to BBC Genome, Andrew Harvey was supposed to be on that night. Peter filled in for him.
8:08 Greville Janner. Conveniently deceased. Under the circumstances I won't say RIP. Thatcher didn't believe a word of it that day and nor do I.
Best christmas present ever.
It's now exactly 24 years ago this was recorded and tomorrow, I HAVE BIRTHDAY!!!

They wouldn't have gone on air before 18.00 - if there was an extended bulletin, they would have taken time from the regional opt out that followed.
wonderful day!!
The best PM we ever had.
Why is Peter Sissons shouting down the telly? :P
THANK GOODNESS!! She was there for far too long and did significant damage
Not long enough she was a great leader
@@davidhodgson9050 she was a sociopath and a bitch. Anyone who supported South African apartheid, like her, does not warrant any accolades or respect.

Scottish miners don’t miss her.
Ding dong the witch is dead.
She wanted to thank the cabinet for their 'dedicated support' they _booted_ her out.
Stupid statement.
Jesus, this was better than sex. The sinking of the unsinkable....but with a whimper rather than a bang. God is good.
how history repeats we did that, the people of the uk ,the iron lady.
She became The Rusty Lady.
Oh happy day....
Like Caesar, like Christ, like Napoleon, she was betrayed. Great men always are
hesltine hated thatcher before then. it was hardly betrayal. thatcher betrayed the working class by lying to them about winter of discontent and making it worse
yes i go along with that - this is the first statement running down that i can go along with
Shush now splinterbyrd - she wasn't a man.
Well she was certainly more man than woman. But great? Erm.
@@cahillgreg Are you going to tell her?

The day that the dead sheep awoke and was found to have sharp, pointy teeth. I remember it well.
"Our long national nightmare is over,"
I agree the country hasn’t recovered from that and I don’t think it will ever
i know this will get hateful responses but, god i loved her
And Anna Ford, eh?
no way that s double think if you fancy someone that s it it doesn t matter if it s anna or margaret or matt hari or benadette or sebastian
she ruined britain you american fuck

+Aidan Lunn (Ferguson Videostar) Haha, that is exactly what it was! Oh, those were the days.
She received shocking treatment by her own cowardice party. She stood head and shoulders above the whole lot of them. A very sad day indeed
Tories tend to be quite cutthroat on their leaders when things aren't going well
Mrs Thatcher's resigned?
Back in the day when politics was about running the country with none of this woke crap pushing everything backwards
