      Couldn't agree with you more. If I have questions, it's only because I'm trying to learn, definitely NOT criticize...the naysayers for this channel need to deal with it or move on....maybe start their own channel, since they're obviously smarter than Jonathan?

    I come here to see stuff I'll never get the chance to see, touch, or experience firsthand. Always fun to see them running again.
    You're doing the work, You're sharing the experience with all of us.
    Bring 'em back to life YOUR way.
    Opinions are like backsides.. Everybody's got one.. And they all stink....

    When I was a kid, oh, probably 8 or 10, I had a friend whose name was Tom Riggle. His father worked for Champion Spark Plugs. This was in the fifties. I lived then 30 miles outside Detroit, down Woodward Ave. A year or two later, Champion moved from the Detroit area to Teledo, Ohio, taking my friend and his father with the company. There ain't much in Teledo these days. I drove through there about fourteen years ago with my wife, on a trip to show her where I grew up. It was all Rustbelt depression era then, and Teledo hasn't recovered one iota since our trip through. It's a terrible thing, what time does to all the good things that used to be so sweet. Financing was what killed Detroit. Nowadays, the auto dealers make more money financing a car than Detroit does making one, and at the same time, what do we get for interest on our bank statements? I think we should pass a law that says, if you drive an American car fifty years old or older, it should be free to register it. Beautify America, and get more antique American autos on the roadways. Nowadays, everyone drives a silver SUV or, if they're real classy, they drive a white or black one. If you drive one of those ugly things, it should cost you double to register it.

    I worked at a full service gas station in the mid '60s. There was an older gentleman that brought his '50 Buick in for an oil change. He always brought his own oil and had an aftermarket oil filter on it that used a roll of toilet paper. We charged him $2.50 in labor to change the oil, filter and lube the car. Changed the oil every 1000 miles and used 30W non detergent oil. That old straight 8 was so quite the fan made more noise than the engine did.

Tapping those rockers to see if they're loose took me back to early days , old guy , charlie , like yourself , what he didn't know , wasn't worth knowing is what all the old hands used to say to us younguns . . Real old top man he was . Straight talking , patient as hell always had time to explain to anyone who he could see was willing to learn . Not many people around these days like old man Charlie unfortunately . Should be especially these days . Vehicles now are just computers on wheels . Should go back to all mechanical . More reliable in my own opinion that is . Keep up the excellent work and content Johnathon . Old schools the best school . Top man . Keep saving the old classics .

  • @wileecohagen
    @wileecohagen Před 4 lety

    Mighty as an old brand. I’ve seen them before but never on a running engine. Way back when there were tons of parts manufacturers and auto makers as well! You can always squirt oil in the cylinders and if the compression comes up it’s the rings. If it doesn’t it’s the valves.

  • @kimharbison5277
    @kimharbison5277 Před 4 lety

    I had a '49 Super, something I learned was sometime in the '49 model year Buick switched over to bearing inserts, before that they were babbitt bearings. Something to keep in mind if you end up with low oil pressure like I did. It would have cost more to rebuild the engine than I paid for the car. It's been a few years but, at the time I was quoted $400-$600 per cylinder to have it rebuilt.

      If it is the same as what you come out of the mines wearing it is pretty fine, almost like flour or corn meal. The draw back to it may be that it is flammable. I doubt the ignition point could be met in the environment that Jonathan is operating in.

I tend to more patient and dose the cylinders with Upper cylinder lube which is available in small quantities as Marvels Magic Mystery Oil (really). They PB Blaster is my best friend, otherwise. Jonathan, don't listen to any of the guys who challenge your methods, it shows their lack of knowledge about engines. I would feel very confident in a vehicle you sold me, were I to be in NC and happen across one you worked on.

    That one engine already had pine straw all over it, so you wont need to add any...😁

    Shop I worked at had sparkplug sandblaster on the wall. Afterward, we sprayed with brake kleen then blasted with air. No sand left. Tell those putzes to shaddup. lol

    Cleaning the carbon fro the inside of the plug with a standard pin works fine. Also, with a thin file, flattening the tip of the electrode helps.

    I use a spark plug cleaner. It sand blasts the plug. Has a canvas bag full of sand. I just brake clean and blow them out. Never had an issue

    I've seen one of those straight 6's out run a V8 302 in a mustang and the built straight 6 was in a Little Ford truck's that came out around the time Chevy made the little Chevy Luv truck...His had two carbs on it to make a 4 barrel...

      A Ford Courier, maybe? Ford made an excellent 300 cu. in. straight 6, but if that was in a Courier, the factory didn't do it. I could easily imagine a 300 in a Courier showing the tail lights to a Mustang 302, at least until speeds got quite high, when the short stroke V8 could out-rev the long stroke 6.

    Jonathan did a quick search and yes the Buick straight 8 did come with a Stromberg 97.
    Another quick search and found Mighty spark plugs can be bought today. One place is Rock Auto.

    Those old straight 8’s were strong smooth running engines. My parents drove Packards when I was a kid in the 50s which had flathead straight eights in them. As I remember, they seemed to develop most of their power in the higher RPM range. I imagine that the Buick is much the same.

    I love the attention straight 8s have been getting lately. They're neat engines

    16:23 If at first you don't get the compression reading you like, just keep taking readings until you see more of what you'd like to see!
    This common sense approach to cold starting engines, even old, old engines even with very low compressions from sitting for decades in some cases, shows a lot of general understanding about how machines work. And shows you don't have to do all that much to hook one up, turn it over and likely get it running, much to your own surprise even!

    As soon as your video started, I thought "That looks like Hiway 1" and it was. The North Carolina Motor Speedway is a sad sight. It has new owners now but nothing new is happening.

    Don't know what year your Buick engine is but I remember looking under the hood of a '49 Super and as I recall it used a Carter carburetor but don't know what series, also the Mighty plugs were used a lot by smaller garages years ago.

      I used to buy Mighty Plugs at Gov-Mart. Depending on the year Buick used Marvel carbs, Zeniths, Carter, Rochester and Stromberg. My '56 Buick Special uses a Carter 2 barrel but some used a Stromberg. The 4 barrel units were usually Rochesters.

    Your videos are great, thanks for sharing. No matter how rough The Rock may be, I’d love to see someone save it. NASCAR needs to get back to the short tracks like The Rock, Nashville and North Wilkesboro.
