- Caravan Towing Law changes on the 20th September, or does it. The towing law hasn't actually changed as yet. From 20th of September you can no longer take a B +E test, but as yet they have not changed the law to allow everyone to tow more than 3500kg, so just wait until the date is announced before you tow more than 3500kg.

This is just yet another goverment "Screw up", due to hgv driver shortages. There will be many accidents waiting to happen when the B+E test stop and this law is swept away. It will mean you can go from lets just say a mini to a large SUV with a 2ton van attached. Absolutely no way. It will make our road even more worrying .
It should have maybe changed to a quicker basic training course where the instructor gave something to say you have pasted basic training.
I'm also glad I bought our twin axel large caravan before this. As I think they were better value than the smaller ones as not everyone could tow them. Watch the prices of twin axel vans rocket.
Yes this may send prices crazy, we have always seen a lower amount of twin axles available in general so this could see even less available too.
I paid £475 for a 2day course and test only last month, now obviously I'm a bit gutted on the law change, but still think its money well spent, I learnt a lot about hitching, reversing, general driving tips and really enjoyed it too. For 2 days and less than £500 I dont see the big deal with everyone now wanting bigger caravans, if you cant pass the test should you really be towing anyway??
If new to towing its possibly even worth doing the course as a training course, you get the confidence and also know how to do it correctly, its not just the towing on the road is it.
@@thecaravanplace The company where I done mine are now starting offering safe tow courses, would definitely recommend as they are proper hgv instructors with years of experience.
I passed b+e and c1 licence which both are automatic entitlement now. Glad I done the training for them because there’s a lot of info a standard B category doesn’t cover, imagine all these B licence holders hooking up +750kg trailers when they don’t know what train weight, unladen and kerbside weights mean or even knowing what their MAM for their vehicle is or how to find out! Police are going to be busy!
Watching from afar this is interesting. Training is always worthwhile, I had to take a "driving test" every year in my job. I found you get out of it what you put into it. MOTs are called a roadworthy over here. Only necessary in Queensland when you re-register / sell a vehicle. Other states have annual MOTs. There is no evidence that the annual roadworthy decreases traffic accidents.
Thanks for watching and commenting 👍 great to hear how other countries do things.
What I understand is you can only tow 3.5 tonne when it all changes. They have only stop the trailer test in the manoeuvring part so be very careful.
Why does everyone focus on people rushing out to buy their first van as a twin axle, that isn't going to happen, yes a few that already towed may no go bigger but most will now be able to get a decent tow car for their 1350kg+ MTPLM van where before they had a just legal car.
Also you can tow without if you display L plates and are accompanied by a B E licence.
Bloody hell, That buccaneer didn’t hang around!! Just shows we are still in the COVID staycation!!
Always know your limits. You wouldnt jump into a massive 4x4 your not uswd to and drive it without caution the same applies to towing take your time and get practicing
Hopefully we will see new drivers getting into caravanning , but still wise to take training, keeping us all safe
It seems that a lot of towing training companies will offer training courses to build experience and confidence, so hopefully people will still do this instead of the test.
So with the law place with VW Touarag which has a 3.5 tons towing capacity I can now tow upto 3.5 tons without having to take the B+E test.
I passed my test in Jam 2012
Yes you now automatically get B+E now.
Nice to be kept updated thanks for taking the time to let us know 👍
Thanks 👍
Good evening Mark, thank you for the video, take care and stay safe 👍😎🇬🇧.
Thanks Wayne 👍
Who expected the government to make it clear and make sense? 😂 just glad I have b+e so it makes no odds to me.
You won't see the date they will suspend test for a few months and get as many lorry drivers through as they can then bring the b+e back in
This is very possible, time will tell. Thanks 👍
Great video Mark, best one I have seen regarding new rules
Thanks 👍
I love all this M.A.M and G.V.W stuff, people still may not realise that if you passed before 1997 you are judged on the G.V.W gross vehicle weight, which is how much it all ACTUALLY weighs.
Whereas from 1997 (B+E) you are judged on how much it's ALLOWED to weigh, M.A.M maximum AUTHOURISED mass.
This law was in my opinion a stupid law anyway, I started towing heavy trailers at work at the age of 25 and I did that daily for 30 odd years. We had to take "refresher courses " which were a bit of a joke, we knew more than the "inspector". Still towing caravan at 74 years of age with LR Discovery over 3.5 tons all over Europe.
Great to hear thanks for commenting, some of the laws are crazy, it doesnt help keep changing them every few years.
Law changing, but nothing stipulates if you have a 'B' on your licence you can just go & tow over 3.5t. You would need the B & E on your licence I'm assuming. So people who have passed between 1997 & Sept 21 may not automatically get entitlement. Is it just new drivers passing there car test after September ?
No it will mean that anyone who would have previously needed a B+E to tow over 3500kg will inherite grand farther rights and be allowed to now tow over 3500kg without taking the B+E test. So anyone from 1997 will not have to take the test. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
The gov website states the B+E entitlement will be added to your licence automatically and it will be updated on your photocard licence when it is next reissued.
Have you got your facts correct because as far as I am aware and I used to be a driving instructor after 97 you could drive a vehicle up to 3500kg and tow a trailer up to 750kg with a combined weight of 4250kg and the max trailer was only 750kg and I will admit that a750kg trailer is not very big and I have been an instructor for awhile
Hi Shaun, thanks for watching and commenting 👍, I will admit I dont always get it right, but this is correct.
This is right, my sister has a ranger that weighs 3.3t loaded so she can only tow 200kgs 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for that , once again 👍
I'm proud to have taken and passed by B+E test and glad it was there. In my view they should have postponed the B+E test rather than scrap it. Sort out the HGV problem and then reintroduce it.
Even after I passed the B+E, I took our rig, 12m 4800kg, to our local industrial estate and spent the afternoon with cones practicing different reverses and making it harder.
I feel the £500 I spent on the motormover was more of a waste of cash than the £500 on the B+E.
On the plus side also makes it easier to do my HGV class 1. So not looking a gift horse in the mouth.
Its definitely worth being safe on the road and know what you are doing, I think the new law could lead to more accidents as a lot of people won't take the time you have. 👍
Also another one you will have to register the caravan to the car your towing it with
I haven't seen this yet, I need to have a look 👍
It to make it more difficult so police can identify theft no more just sticking a number plate on
Hi great video but you should do another video on my new proposal by the DFT on the register in your caravan and also the security tag that you have seven back you can have it as well bye-bye understand this will cost over hundred pounds per year
This is only for commercial trailers, or trailers over 3500kg which no caravan weighs over 3500kg so isnt something that needs to be done. Things may change in the future though. Thanks for commenting 👍
Big Brexit advantage, but only valid in the UK.
If you cross the Channel and a car and caravan together weigh more than 3.5 tons, you need an international driving license B+E.
Once the law is passed it should then cover you for other countries also from what I can see, but its worth checking once the law is passed. 👍
@@thecaravanplace So typical Brexit. UK changes is law and other countries have to accept that? No way. other countries did not change its drivers licence law and stays clear: UK drivers need also an International drivers licence B+E, for car and trailer over 3,5 tons.
@@wim7506 it's no different to Americans coming here with a car license which lets them drive upto around 10,000kgs-ish
There are no refunds for anyone who cancels their booked test!
Hopefully if people have booked tests and paid they don't cancel, I do actually think it is still worth doing even if just for experience.
So from the 20th of September there will be no legal way to tow over 3.5 tonnes combined vehicle and trailer. I have never heard anything so stupid.😠😡
Yes until the new law is made law you are stuck. Crazy.
You would have struggled to get a test anyway. They were like rocking horse poo. 😁
2023 what going on ? What the update
Be nice if they changed the 7.5ton license
This would havd made more sense really, as it would have allowed more 7.5t drivers and fixed part of the issues.
Hi there. If I wont be able to take a test then how could I tow a twin axle caravan in mainland Europe? Will it be automaticly added to our GB licence?
Yes at some point you will get B+E added to your licence later this year, but not yet. We will do a video once this is added.
@@thecaravanplace ok thanks. Great videos by the way
is it that you can only tow over 750kg if you past your test between 97 and 2013 when the law changes ?
You can tow a maximum car and caravan upto 3500kg, so if max weight of car is 2000kg then max caravan of 1500kg. It will change soon so you can have a 3500kg car and tow a 3500kg caravan.
Wouldn't be ever towing a caravan. Motorhome or camper for me
A lot of people worry about the towing, the towing courses are great for this as it will teach you the correct way of towing, but also build your confidence for towing or confirm you really don't like towing 🙃
@@thecaravanplace I've not looked into towing but I assumed you had to go on a course as part of the insurance policy. But as stated before towing a caravan isn't for me
Any update on this topic
Another video would be great
czcams.com/video/KCN89wFngZ4/video.html
It was part of a update video sorry so wasn't very clear. We never got chance to do a proper video.
Why didn't you mention that it would still be advisable to get some towing tuition before as you put it, rush out and buy their big 4x4 and you sell them a big twin axel 🤔
Great comment. A lot of the towing course companies are going to start doing this and it is well worth doing.
So what is the total amount you will be able to tow?
You will be able to drive any motor vehicle upto 3500kg and tow a caravan or trailer upto 3500kg as long as the vehicle can tow that weight.
How many times did you repeat yourself ?
A fair bit by the sounds of it lol. Its a tricky subject and have to keep repeating myself to make sure I've said it correctly 😆
Took away the towing test's and now proposing to bring in a yearly caravan MOT 😂😂😂 bojo's government aint taking away anything that's a money earner. THOU SHALL BE SHAFTED 🤣🤣🤣🤣💩💩💩✔️✔️✔️
God help us lol
