So basically this guy is the son of 1 of the most legendary astronauts that ever lived. But has passed away when that NASA guy came to his college campus( guess son is a Professor). NASA is telling him they need him but he has his doubts he could do this. But NASA guy says that his father prepared him his whole life. He has a woman he loves but must leave her and go into space because it is the only way to save her so he has no choice. NASA wants him to save the world from a huge meteor smashing into earth that will inevitably kills all on it. Somehow NASA feels if they have the son go into space, he could stop it. But he fails. The audience is now left seeing him go into despair that he couldn't save himself at the end(ship malfunction) let alone all on Earth. The End.
Oh, the way I found out was by watching another video that explained what this short was about. Cause I truly had no clue what was going on in the short while watching it.
That much was evident - except the meteor part. It never said what it was they wee trying to accomplish or why.

i agree. Too many film makers try to add too much mystery but at the lack of coherence... it then just feels like a big waste of time having watched the video.

I come from a place where story telling must include three elements, or they are not worthy of being told. An opening, A body, and A conclusion! This had the amazing distinction of failing to possess all three! A truly amazing feat of incompetence. Bravo!

TURTLE MOON FILMS - First, music bed is too high to properly here your arrogant"explanation" to what could have been a better short film. Two, the customer is always right. If many of your viewers don't get your message, then YOU failed, not the audience. Insulting the audience in your explanation just shows how spoiled, entitled and off base you are. Third, your actors did a decent job, and with a proper director, some short exposition and a "less is more" viewpoint on set design this would be a much better film. I expect much abuse from you with my post. Hopefully you will consider these and other points from other viewers, regardless of how hurt your feelings become.
How did you convince people to work on this? Did any of the actors ask what is was supposed to mean? Did you run short on budget and not shoot the entire thing? As it stands it makes no sense whatsoever.
I applaud your efforts but this is a swing and a miss.

the irony of this film is amazing.. one team gets weeks, months to perpare a way to to entertain us for only 9 minutes and 58 seconds.. fails and doesn't even care LOL

I think we were supposed to get that this is an important threat, but it is easy to miss if you miss the meaning of the Hubble (space telescope) line.
Reasons I thought the confusion may be deliberate:
They call Armageddon an "anomaly". Based on the 25 seconds of title shots, I assumed the anomaly had something to do with the sun.
The later conversation between Umbra and the protagonist works really well if we assume it is an conversion between the author and audience:
8:41 "Just tell me what it looks like, OK?"
Nasa people looking mildly concerned (suggesting lost of craft not loss of planet)
9:09 "I don't understand" (audience is lost too)
"I know."
9:16 "That's Okay."
9:20 "That's the point" (editorial unmask?)

There was a short story I read, years ago, in one of Asimov's anthologies. It was this story....it's not about anything in particular, really....just about a man, remembering things from his life, including those that led him to his end, as well as if his life has meant anything to anyone. In that story, the man wonders if anyone on Earth will see him as he enters the atmosphere. A little boy see's the catastrophic reentry and makes a wish, thinking it to be a shooting star. That might have been a better closing statement, instead of Umbra saying "Enjoy your rest, captain."
I liked it a lot. The short movie takes images we are familiar with, memes, elements of story that are very familiar (as witnessed by the summaries some commentators provided) and combines these to just hint at a narrative...that we all get and that still leaves a lot open to our imagination... so we can make up our own stories in our minds... This is a movie that gives you freedom to think and imagine yourself. Great

I liked this a lot. Very nicely shot, good acting, good music, it floated along as if I myself was weightless.
It's a short film: it doesn't have to make perfect sense. I understood it just fine.
For those complaining there wasn't a resolvement... the mission failed, dude faces death and the anomaly hits Earth despite their efforts.
Pretty straight forward I thought.

ok. so.The guy dies and the meteor hits earth. But how did he screw up the mission? No details at all. So vague .. No wonder half the people here don't get wtf is going on.

Congo Kael agreed! In the movie they state that they don’t know what the anomaly is - how would they not be able to tell it’s an asteroid years beforehand? Also - why in the world would they pick someone just because of his father’s expertise? Assuming a shuttle could really do anything about an asteroid (nuclear missiles, perhaps?) - they would send a Crew of their most capable astronauts. The plot is poor, the execution is not great (so many anachronisms in the shuttle contents, for example), and the writer responds to criticism with a lack of professionalism, grace and maturity.

Alright I love myself some good ambiguity in short films but this... I'm sorry but you can't really pick up on what's happening. From the first time watching this, all I can say is that this dude is selected to go on a mission to the anomaly zone in space where I'm assuming his father went missing. We, the audience, learn about this through the use of flashbacks. The main character reaches this place, and then it just cuts to a shot of an object burning through the atmosphere after some dialogue with UMBRA. Yeah, I'd say it's quite confusing. Furthermore, the UMBRA character isn't really fleshed out so we don't know the meaning behind why she said she was confused at the end. I don't know, I think this needs more exposition. The acting and cinematography was pretty good, just cut some of those lens flares down. Can be distracting.
There was no solar flare involved in getting to orbit as was discussed early in the video. Also no indication of why there was an apparent problem with life support.

Some great general concepts. Some interesting character fragments. Hints at a strong story.

In the first couple years most of dust was very succinct and had clear reasons and stories told, and the ones that didn't had very good reason to be nebulous for artistic reasons. In the ensuing years since dust became more well known many shorts have absolutely no point nor story, and some even lack coherence entirely. Then you have a few that even have multiple part stories, where if a random person jumps in any order beyond the first it makes no sense whatsoever.
I understood it just fine. Perhaps you just need things dumbed down for you?
I've literally watched about 100 of these shorts in the last few weeks and I gotta say this is the only one that has really come up short. The life of anything is in the details and for this reason that's why there is a lynch mob at your door.
PS. When the mob is at your door words like screw you and idiots are the last thing you would want to say to calm them down.

If that was some kind of film school exercise, then full marks although it would help to know what the question was. But on it's own I'm totally lost but interested to know more.
What I got was this :
An anomaly manifested somewhere close to orbit, and his father vanished . His father probably knew something or had a theory about what this anomaly is , and what it's effects are on our planet. He prepared his son for the future in case something happened to him, hence the scene with the whiteboard. Now what the case seems to be is that they misjudged the info at hand, and thought of the incoming boulder as an anomaly, maybe because it had electromagnetic capabilities which greatly influenced all-radio activity , or maybe it is a meteorite which had some effect on earth's gravitational field, or orbiting fashion . Oh lord this could be a hell of a plot , too bad it got left over like this

The main sunspot that is focused upon has a huge plus sign in it. Kind of neat for that. Not certain I understand the rest though.
Not only did the space shuttle have all of those 1950's vacuum tubes, but did anyone notice the old style pencil sharpener mounted beside his head? All of the shavings would be floating around the inside every time they sharpen a pencil which they would never have in the first place on a space mission.
I did notice the pencil sharpener. I thought it was a funny touch that didn't take anything away from the overall project.

I liked it, I thougth about 2002 the second odyssey.
Ok. Just watched this and really enjoyed the acting, music and videography. Don't know what budget you had, but why were there racks of vacuum tubes? Or did I misidentify them? And why did this one person go into space and how long was he there to have only 6 minutes of oxygen left? I am really trying to find a meaning here but am coming up short. It may just be me though. Was the thing falling to earth the anomaly? Was it going to wipe out life on earth like with the dinosaurs? With all that being said, I did enjoy the film, even if left a bit puzzled.

Explained, my butt. The voiceover was *completely* drowned by the "background" "music." My experience for around the last ten years is that most of the younger audio "engineers" don't know their ass from a hole in the ground when it comes to balancing a mix. NONE of them (alright, VERY FEW of them) seem to be able to grasp the fact that *they* can understand the voiceover because they already *know* what it says from reading it during production. The solution (especially for You Tube-type productions) is simply to grab some random dude (or dudette) who happens to be walking by and make him/her listen to it on a crappy laptop. If they can understand it, mission accomplished. If not, do it over. BTW - the vacuum tubes were an interesting if anomalous touch. Not so sure about the parking-lot PA horn speaker and the pencil sharpener. Work on it.

5% oxygen equating to 6 minutes means that he only had 2 hours of oxygen total on this "space station" from the beginning. One could guess that his mission was supposed to be short. We don't know what his mission was so there essentially is no plot to this movie. And then the vacuum tubes and pencil sharpener. On a two hour mission with radio contact to relay data, why would he even need a pencil to begin with? I use mechanical pencils because I hate sharpening.

He had the "2 minute flash " before his eyez....his job was to push the meteor away from hitting the sun...he accomplished it but wlhis ship was made inopporative and he crashed back to earth. NASA saw his success as to doing it correctly. The annomaly was ....Unbra came to life and flew away!!!! lol

Some truly beautiful cinematography and convincing acting; but from the comments it's apparent that the story isn't clear to many viewers. It probably wouldn't take much to add something to change that, though.

I am one of those 26k views. I came on the promise of sic-fi, like many others. The LOST happens after viewing it, not before! This is about feedback and critique, not criticism of the director/producer, it is about the film's story, not the person! As such is a valuable resource, and should be seen as a way of improving future films.

Very heavy...
I think they have seen an ice comet/meteoroid headed for earth. Note the talk about a solar flare pushing an object (the anomaly) into earth's orbit. For some reason his ship has also experienced problems. I guess an extinction event, only the events in the film are cryptic.
This has some nice cinematic moments - good cinematography, blocking and editing. My feeling is that this is more of a character-centric story and needs a LOT more time to develop the feelings of hopelessness and futility in the actions of the story and characters. Its a shame that the main character's regret for not being with the person that mattered to him could not be further developed.
Technical comments:
Watch out for J.J. Abrams's love for lens flares. Sometimes they enhance the image but most of the time they are distracting.
Don't worry about the armchair critics who want to see ultra futuristic space ships. This story appears to take place in the very nearly present time and I can tell you from experience that present day military grade (or NASA) electronic equipment has a very '50s industrial look about it. A little more effort in set construction (or decoration) within the space craft to remove the visual references between ceiling and floor would make the set much more believable. Also filming at odd angles within the ship (not vertically oriented) would also enhance the illusion of weightlessness.
I've seen toddler Lego sets put together better than this plot.
Im going to take a stab at this. The "anomaly" is a point where two object can share the same space and time there by becoming entangled. If one object then brakes this entanglement it is transported to the location of the original mass and the entirety of the original mass will take up the point of the first objects spacel position. think of it like this, two objects have a shared center of gravity. They also have a shared point where they can become entangled, naturally at a distance ( this being the "anomaly" point) if that happens they swap places maybe only a few degrees off for the comet but that will make it for a safe pass and the shit that entangled with it is what now strikes the earth. Why not just send an unmanned ship up there ? You need a conscious entity within the entangled structure to be aware of it and collapse the wave function.. Ya ya I know its one hell of a stretch but its better then what we were left with :)
I totally get this video. When the anomaly zone is entered the spaceship gets a vision of what is to come on earth, then enters a parallel universe where he can warn the citizens of that version of Earth to prepare for the disaster. Due to laws of conservation of matter and energy, when the guy disappears into the parallel universe, a different version of him arrives in this world from another universe, etc... Unfortunately, because death has been cheated, this operation needs to be repeated every generation.

You really shouldn't have to watch an explained video to appreciate a 10 minute short on youtube that isn't even good enough to deserve more time than it has already been given. Maybe take some of the criticisms of other people (who, no, their opinions aren't meaningless) and use them to improve and build upon your future projects, without always assuming you know better.

At first I was really enjoying a true sci-fi in this short and its story far from cheap postapo, otherwise so commong in other shorts. I had problems with technology aspects: Odd mix of technology from the 60s (although very well retro-designed!) , the shuttle from 90s and the computer with abilities available some ten or twenty years from now. However that did not realy matter much.
What matters is storytelling and it failed. Somewhere among comments here you can find a link to Vimeo with author's explanation. There is something wrong with a movie which needs another movie to explain it...
Vít Výmola the Vimeo explanation doesn’t do anything to improve the flimsy plot - and it’s condescending and rude just like his comments on this video - a person who can’t accept criticism is unlikely to improve - and he obviously cares little for the audience. Valves? ( 2.18 ). On board a spacecraft? So no EMP / CME shielding then?
What a brilliantly acted waste of time. While it is wonderful to leave people wanting more, this is just a jumble of images that ultimately mean nothing. Not context, no urgency, no investment...it feels like it could have been something, but there was no story, just a vague idea.
