In the north of Scotland, at the village of Gairloch. There lives a lone faerie, one who was exiled from the faerie court and abandoned in the forest. The tale of Ghillie Dhu. On one warm afternoon in mid-summer, a young girl Jessie Macrae went wandering in the nearby forest. She spent many hours adventuring and exploring the trees, but when evening fell, she realised that she had lost her way. Fear began to descend upon the poor girl as she attempted to fiind her way through the forest. An hour later tired, hungry and footsore, she sat beneath a large fir tree and began to weep. Suddenly from behind the tree a calm and reasted voice said, “Why do you cry, girl”. She jumped at the sound and looked round to see a strange elven like creature standing before her. The creature had long hair black as a raven’s wing and hazel brown eyes, jessie described as soft and kindly. With the creatures’ strange smile, she could see it had hundreds of small sharp teeth. If jessie had seen the Sith at a distance she would have ran screaming, but now up close she could tell there was no malice in the creature’s heart. The Sith wore a great cloak of moss and leaves, he bore such a resemblance to his background that jessie thought he may be the very manifestation of the forest its self.

my house is on the border of a birch forest and was built in victorian times, its name is "ghillie dhu's gate" and has a legend that every time a child goes missing you can see ghillie dhu wandering the woods looking for the lost child
GHILLIE DHU????GUARDIAN OF THE WOODS???WOW THAT IS DIVINE!!!!
BOYKIN DIALECT " GHILLIE" MEANS "BLACK"
AND "DHU" MEANS "MAN"
"GHILLIE DHU" MEANS " BLACK MAN"
THANK YOU LAITH WOLF□
I love this!
I love this video. The two sides of the Ghillie Dhu’s personality remind me of J. R. R. Tolkien’s Willow Man in the Old Forest that drags people down with its roots and Treebeard and Fangorn who helps Merry and Pippin. I bet that’s where he got his inspiration.
A most beautiful story and so wonderfully explained. Thank you. More please.
My Father's Mother's family were some of those first Lovet Scouts from the Highland Clan Fraser, arguably the first Special Operations Forces. Ghillie Dhu is now my favorite Sidhe I think, he should be the Patron Sidhe of Search and Rescue teams.
A huge Hell yes to the Patronage idea :-D
We need more of him to protect the forests
Ghillie Due sounds like the best friend humanity never deserved
This is how they want you to think??? They want you to think we don’t deserve any thing we are so barbaric and childish that we need our one world overlords to tell us what to do and how to think this is what the Pictish people fought against all those years ago they fought and died to keep our well deserved relationship with nature we belong outside we belong with nature and both nature and us deserve it
Cool to read a story about a mythical creature that's actually like, a cool guy.
I would love it if Ghillie was My forest friend. 🤔🥰🤗💖🇨🇦💚🌲🌳 I love your accent. 😍
Ohh wow. The ghillie suit comes from this legend, that’s amazing. 🇦🇺✝️🇦🇺
Loved this! I've been sick and couldn't fall sleep last night, and thought, 'why not see if there's some Scottish folktales for a relaxing bedtime story on CZcams?' After listening to this, I did get that well needed rest.
Thanks so much, I also do this with other creators, I need something to listen to while trying to sleep haha. I hope you are feeling better
I often wondered where the term ghillie came from. Had no idea it was from Scottish myth and legend. This is awesome.
Thank you so much for that story , my brother was in the Marines and was a sharp shooter, Now this is where it gets weird,,,,, I have been seeing people in the trees for about 8 years now having different versions of a ghillie suit I try to show others but they think I'm nuts that is not all my brother believes me and a niece who was in the military She saw them right off .. and guess what ....... I have Scottish decendents Mc Henery again thank you
I was a Ghillie Dhu in the Brownies back in the 80's in Scotland.
The Ghillie Dhu is so sweet, and deserves respect.
Even the Sith take hospitality seriously.
The story has reminded me of a fairytale from the country I grew up- 'borowy dziad' benevolent spirit of woods, protected the forest and those who respected it. ♥️ Thank you for your story
I love your stories - each one is a little diamond❤❤❤
Well told. I enjoyed this tale.
The spirit of the wood guardian still lives
Gorgeous stories ❤️ Thank you! 😊
Love the clip from Mushishi. Such great folklore that is similar and shared in so many cultures.
Mushishi, is one of my all time favorites. I love the tales.
You deserve a million likes!
Thanks for watching
Very interesting. Thankyou
Wonderful tale! I was wondering about the ghillie reference, so I'm glad you explained that.
Please make more stories from Scotland. I loved this.
Thank you
Thank you Laith Wolf, I had no idea the ghillie was derived from fae folk and the steal hearted Scots snipers! But I have the utmost respect for Ghillie Dhu of this story. I'm sure he could have handled the MacKenzie's if he wanted to (wink)!
Wonderful storytelling in the old bardic tradition for these lockdown days, keep up with the great work that you do, best wishes from the wirral ( which featured in the tale of Sir Gawain and the green knight).E.
Many thanks!
that was a beautiful story Liath Wolf or should I say "Gray Wolf"
This channel is swift coming to be my favourite channel. Liarth Wolf you are a great storyteller. In olden times you would have been welcome at any hearth or hall!!
Glad you enjoy it!
Well done! I have always loved mythology and folk tales. Your videos are beautifully produced, informative, entertaining and relaxing
Awesome, thank you!
The Fells have a similar spirit, an owld fella, often with his old Collie who has 'Allus been heeyah mind, since ah wer la'al...'
He's taken many a walker and climber to rescuers or safety 'See't thon liight? Ga on terward it n mind thi step asseh, else the'll slip ower and hev a mischief...'
I guess everywhere still has that connection to the other realms.
I'am so sad😥 to see what we did with our beautiful Earth. She gave us all she had but for us is never enough 😔🌺🌸🌹🌻🌲🌳🍀🌛🌕🌜
I’ve just watched the story of the fairy witch. These are some fascinating productions! Well done, and thanks!
Many thanks!
we need to hear more about our pagan ancestors mythology, I also wonder how many old Scottish tales have a norse influence on them
If you go up north to Orkeny and Shetland, the vast majority of folklore and myth has a norse influence. This definitely filters down south as well. Thanks for watching
It's nice to hear how the land of my ancestors influenced the the job I had in the military so much later.
Loved this! Thank you!
It is illegal how little subscribers you have. Great video! It didn't click to me before you mentioned that the ghillie suit was named after ghillie dhu. Very interesting.
Hello,
I think that I'm going to love your channel since I like mythology of any kind. Thanks.

Love listening to these, and ss a fellow Scot, ( Kingdom of Fife) i know alot of these places too.
Seenmy own cryptid creatures as a long haul trucker including a flying kangaroo thing, a gnome and a big black cat walking beside a ball of light while i was going fishing one day in the 80s.
Thanks for the videos👍
Just subscribed ty for sharing brother
Thank You Liath Wolf, I love the adventurous folktale related trips like this one indeed.
Some random info: During the Second Boer War the Scottish took to wearing leather aprons to cover their kilts before someone thought of camouflage, because the Boers would take pot-shots at the Highlanders in their bright kilts, as they were standing out like beacons. (Whomever thought it a good idea to send brightly clad men into a war zone must not have had their brain switched on.)
Lol🤣
The Germans called them "the devils in skirts" lol.
@@audreymackie2165 lol😂
@@audreymackie2165 If you ever had the displeasure of meeting an angry Scotsman, you'd know why. 😂 They don't believe in an eye for an eye - more like the eyes of you and all your mates for an eye. 😂😂
To be fair, the last war Scottish troops were involved in in a big way was the Napoleonic War, where everyone was in bright colours, so you can understand why the thought of them sticking out never came to mind
I love how I believe in this stuff:) I am Scott pagan
Thank you for your stories.
As a child over 60 years ago I was christened Ghillie Dhu. Later as I entered school my name was changed. Anglicized to fit in. Strangely, I live in the country side ,among the trees and care for the well being of handicapped children. The wreck of the ship, The Gairloch is within walking distance of home.
In Maryland we are a old British colony we have some many haunted woods especially the swamps screaming at night to phantom machinery running in the dark I've witnessed this myself but no fairies.
I'm actually writing a children's book for my son and Ghille Dhu is in it and assists the main character as the young boy gets lost in the forest. Thanks for the information here!
fascinating.
This was great! Keep it up! SUBBED!
My 1st video from your channel I will watch them all.... absolutely beautiful work here. Thank you so very much for these wonderful videos and stories.
Thank you!
The cottage is to be found at Culloden...and was used as a hospital by the English for the English.
When watching this I could not help, but think of the Elves of middle earth.
Funny. I had a dream where this spirit creature much like this Ghillie Dhu spirit came to my dreams a few years back instructing me to make a outfit made from animal hide then make a mask made from wood in the shape of a wolf skull then to add the antlers of a stag. I was instructed to do this then go out into the forest and stay for one week. Now here I am learning about this creature. I wonder why it came to me in my dreams.
When something comes to you in a dream, you're supposed to follow its instructions. Native American cultures know this too when they go on dream vision quests. We seem to have lost this custom in modern times.
I would suggest doing what the spirit in the dream says and see what happens.
So this is all awesome and I cannot thank you enough for spreading a little more of our culture out to the world. I would also like to add that "Ghillie Dhu" in Gaelic is pronounced "Yillie Chu" where the "gh" makes a soft "yuh" sound and the "dh" has a soft "ch" sound almost like in "who"
Thanks, thats great, I must say my Gaelic is far from perfect
this Hits my heart hard.
Really cool video. Thank you.
Rewatching: This is one of my favorites!

I'm sure I will 😁
I had a dream like Jesse McRae when I was a young girl. The dream is fuzzy but I eventually made it back and didn’t remember how. Did the Ghille Dhu lead my spirit back from being lost? Maybe. I give him thanks anyways. The Guille Dhu reminds me of Anubis, also
Just found your channel, awesome content man.

I honestly feel Scotland is home inside out in everyway Scotland is my Bagpipe Father and he will come here and bring me home my Black Father is Scottish King James 6th I Bless you My Scottish Lion Father□
Just found you and love it already! Subscribed and would love to see your channel growing 🥰
Thanks for subbing!
what a beautiful story, so ghillie dhu never came back after the hunt? i love that u included the mackenzies from outlander
I'm not of Scottish heritage so what do I know, but I've heard Ghillies were gameskeepers tho right?
Or Scot Gaelic for gameskeeper?
I wonder this must be the origin of the ghille suit.
Very similar to the Leshen in Witcher 3, but more peaceful.
I wonder how much this influenced certain pop culture characters.
Highlanders are the Scoti Invaders Scythians turned Spainards (such as Ross, Ross' Particularly from the Scoti Kings), Vikings, and whatever Picts managed not to get Crushed In between the Two! Scoti got the upper hand, eventually though being overthrown by the Stuarts, who took my Ancestors Daughter as Queen, starting the events which unfolded into a Great War.
Another great tale, the US Army snipers use ghillie suits to this day, I never knew where the term came from! many thanks for your stories!
This feel like it's real to me 😯and I wonder if ghillie dhu is still there🤨if he is I'd like to go to Scotland😻💖so that I would meet him imagine a fairy or magical being in the forest,it's so imperial❤️💚✨💙💜💞👩🦰
Wow, the military inspired by myth. Respect!
props to Outlander image at 5:48
Sounds similar to the Slavic Leshy.
Kako si?
You understand?
@@marinakaiser7639 UHm, OK.
hi again liath wolf, i wonder if you know the name of the loop theme that plays during the whole clip and not the song in the beginning? i could have been more clear.
best wishes and thanks for sharing the scottish mythological entities!
I can't remember it of the top of my head, but It will be from Alexander Nakarada, I bought all of his music to use for my videos. here is his website www.serpentsoundstudios.com/
@@LiathWolf found it! wintersong - alexander nakarada thx!
Um, wait, what was her name? 😳
What was that black and white movie where that girl get attacks by some vines?
Evil Dead 2, Thanks for watching
@@LiathWolf you're welcome. 🐱
As a rural child in 1970's Scotland I thought all spirits where female as the family, who where by todays standards very superstitious and former travellers refer to them as She it was only when I asked my aunties if there where boy faeries that they realised I spoke no Gaelic.
Sadly none from my generation where taught it, but I elders spoke it frequently as well as what you'd refer today as romany...deals where always done in the old language.
Bonnie good.
Are you a Ghillie Dhu...or a Ghillie Dhunt? :p
@Liath Wolf I am not sure if you will believe me good sir. I'm American and I have been raised by many spirits namely the Sidhe or Sìth however you spell it. Despite being baptized by my mother and what not I still got called a Demon by many Christians despite I don't burn in Church or Holy Water or Frankenescence.
Growing up I have always seen spirits and I was even taught Wicca 101. We had a "Meet your Deity" day and it was a group meditation thing. It was a Tuesday in 2016 and my game not got canceled as always for Wicca 101 but this time by a Tornado in my Gamemaster's home town so I knew this Wicca 101 class was important.
I got to meet my Faery mother who took me from the group and brought me to Avalon where I have a home there and house. I also got to meet my Faery sister.
Many do not believe me at first but I am the daughter of Queen Titania and King Oberon. I am also the sister of Queen Mebd. The Seelie and Unseelie Courts I can traverse both and my own.
I went to a Scottish Highland Games here in Washington state and found I am part of clan MacLennan but they don't seem to like me because of my Faerie aura and that I am also a witch by birth.
I want to go to Scotland and Ireland and connect with the spirits there and help heal the land. Every human who has ever hurt me either by rape or abuse or gossip has had horrible things happen to them that I might find out later. Some work with angels some with darker spirits but they have a different energy than say Dragons or Angels or Demons or such just many humans cannot differentiate.
This video...I got to meet the spirit from this video. He pulled me aside and listened to this video. He is very similar to the artwork depicting him.

Is there a difference between highland and lowland folklore?
Yes there is a huge difference, between the highlands and lowlands. Mostly due to very seperate cultural influences, the lowland folklore has more aspects of english, saxon and welsh lore, where as the highlands, is heavily influenced by irish, norse and pictish lore. Hope that helps, thanks for watching
@Liath Wolf thank you for responding! I recently learned that I'm nearly full Scottish (DNA, obv), and I think we were from the lowlands. Very cool info, I love these stories. 🖤
00:53 excuse me the young girl WHO?
