- Bigger is better what a cliche right? Or is it?
In this video, I'm telling you briefly why I don't want a wind vane and some other things most long-distance sailors do differently from me. I dare to share with you my point of view and also my journey in a genuine and honest way. The answers might surprise you, but then again this was the biggest advantage old Vikings had :-)

I'm trying to sail around the world in my Bavaria 55 Cruiser, making videos whenever I have time for it. Most of the time I sail singlehanded but occasionally I do have sailing friends onboard. Still in the Caribbean due to Covid and was supposed to be in Asia by now.
Even though this is season 3 on youtube I have already sailed 4 seasons full time but did not make that many videos in the beginning. Before full-time sailing, I have sailed several seasons in the Med prior to this, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and also been an active regatta sailor. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and been sailing ever since.

I'm just a normal person sharing my travel adventure through my eyes and experience from my perspective! Remember how I do things might work for me but not for you. It might even not be the correct way to do things, and I don't have the blueprint either. I'm not perfect and nobody is. The day I believe I know it all and don't think I can learn new things I should go ashore.

Really good points about having a comfortable modern home to live in as well as a fast and safe yacht.
I am following this line but with smaller budget and finding the balance between comforts, performance, price, age, size and on ...that works for me.
Glad I am not the only one who does not want an old fashioned "blue water boat" but also wants to sail oceans and live confortably.

As someone who plans to one day do the solo cruiser thing, size is definitely something I've considered a big deal. While I know that I could easily survive and live with a sub 40' boat, I don't really want to. I want to be able to take a shower without feeling like I'm in a coffin, or to be able to sleep without having my feet inside of a box. I want to be able to decide that I don't want to sit here right now and have an option other than a couple feet away on the other side of the mast or outside in the rain.
But at the same time, I think about how things get bigger faster than the boat gets longer, including things that I might have to manhandle, like sails, or the anchor, etc... My brain says "what if the windlass fails and you have to pull up the anchor by hand, do you REALLY want that extra 10kg on the end of that chain that's 2mm larger?" or "what if you need to deal with a sail issue in a bad situation? Are you prepared to wrestle with 10m^2 of extra sailcloth?.
So seeing you out there soloing a yacht that by pretty much all group wisdom says is "too big for a solo" is nice. Of course you have a lot more experience that has made you into a sailor that can do these things solo, and I'm just someone aspiring, I've always felt like the best way to learn is to jump in with both feet and start treading water.
I feel like I've commented this on your videos before, but I'll say it again. Thank you for sharing with us and acting as inspiration for those of us who want to be where you are.

JUST SEEING THIS ONE! Total agreement here...I was at the sailing club the other day and a sailor said, "i'm thinking about downsizing 'cause my boat is a bit much to single-hand...." Of course I had to ask, "what size is your boat?"...He said,...yes, he really said this..."25 feet!" Thomas, I am planning to go from 25' myself to 60 ft. to single-hand around what ever part of the world I choose. I appreciate your honesty and willingness to not listen to the norm and think for yourself "out of the box!" Bon Voyage....

You are great , biggest sailboat I ever owned was a 43 deck salon ( French) yes a 50 plus footer is exponentially more expensive run rate , but 50 to 58 is a very sweet spot. I’ve sailed for over 50 years and you taught me something! The twin rudder set up makes huge sense , a heavy puff of wind would round me up fast on my large but single rudder . There is a stalling effect in the rudder as it breaks clear in that hydrodynamic situation. There just is not a good enough foil
Surface to effect a 20 k pound boat going 7 knots or surfing at 10 !

We all know it’s based on your knowledge and experience and desires and I am grateful you impart all this stuff to us. Great video Thomas ,enjoyed your explanation of your choices.A big boat that has/is being sailed single handed l know of is a Dynamic 80 called Pawnee by and an old Australian guy(Norm) for many years,he has been everywhere on his own,he is on your part of the world somewhere,it is for sale on Cruisers Forum,just search fir Pawnee.He was asking about $700k but might now down around $450 thanks for your video

Lots of good points well expalined. I think the dinghy garage is particularly interesting, so nice to have a clear foredeck, and as you say to keep the weight down and forward.

Guess you’re spot on... Norwegians are born and raised not to stick their head out, and definitely not believe we’re the one with the blueprint.

I think your boat is very nice and even though you mention the cost differential,, some things that bring us enjoyment cost more money and as the saying goes, you can't take it with you. I enjoy your vlog so much, you have so much experience and I learn so much. All my research (I don't have a boat yet) tells me the same things you're said. Also I want my boat to be my home, like an apartment, not like a basement so I want space and a proper shower. I mean it's the 21st century, living on a boat should be civilized right?

Hi Thomas, well spent time to listen to your wisdom. Note also, it is only mono-hulls cruisers that demand wind wanes so necessary. Wind wanes is totally absent in the discussion among catamaran skippers and does as you, rely on the auto pilot. Cheers.
You are totally right and also there is lots of disadvantages with a wind wane not so many talks about. However in smaller monohull it’s brilliant. All the best and cheers from Be Free🍻
The biggy is sail trim before engaging the A/P . Iv had 65fters to 55 try's now at 73 down to a 34 fter & give me a 50fter any time , Just think ahead & have all lines to the cockpit - Fair winds my friend youv got it right - Life's not a rehearsal - Enjoy .

What year is your vessel? And how much did you spend? How many upgrades were added? Instrument upgrades? Engine maintenance? What is your annual running costs. Can you do a episode on that?
Thank you for watching and your comment. She is a 2012 mod and I have not done much as she already had lots of things like a huge watermaker, oversized generator and so on. Critical things I changed/upgraded was double up with computers for autopilot and double up with hydraulic systems that’s stand alone redundancy. Also added cockpit arch and solar with replacement of chargers and stuff from Victron. Added two sails as well, and for the comfort a full size laundry machine. Gonna do a full refit of all standing riggings next. Some is already in earlier episodes and it’s more to come. All the best

I am not a sailor, but I was amazed to see that a lot of what I thought I would want in a yacht being espoused by you and utilizing diagrams to back up your theories. I have not sailed in over 30 years because my wife does not like sailing. Keep the great videos coming and I am going to have to binge on your videos to catch up to your latest postings.
Great! I would like to have a windvane to combine with good sail trim. But only if it was working with a trim tab/s on the rudder/s. Not the pendulum ones.

@@SailingwithThomas Have you ever considered positioning cctv/video cameras on your boat (Big Brother style) to do the recording positions and you can do away with time-consuming 'handheld' recording on your boat?
Yeah I have been looking at some options but it’s pretty expensive and quite a lot work to install. Also need lots of power and massive storage. So for now I believe my GoPro’s would have to do the work on side of my DSLR. All the best 🍻

Don't change a thing about your videos, Thomas; they are great. I also learned to trim my sails on my dinghy so that I could let go of both sheets in order to open a beer, prepare my pipe and sit back and enjoy the sailing :-)

New sub. Very interested in little things solo sailors need to do that 2 people would take for granted. Like anchoring, retrieving anchor, docking, avoiding unmarked shoals/ bommies, how all lines are led to cockpit, safety at sea and anchor. You seem like a great guy with a zest for life. Hi Thomas, I loved your description of balancing the boat without the auto pilot, I did this years ago on my J30 with no autopilot doing some solo sailing. I found if I took the time to balance things out the boat simply drove itself and learned exactly how my boat worked in various conditions. Doing this prior to engaging the auto pilot is not only smart but keeps you in tune with your boat. Nice job!

Great episode. Love the garage and swim platform - that's essential for warm climates. Surprised to see the galley opposite the settee, not a fan of that setup as you lose valuable seating. Personal preferences of course. Thanks for sharing.

The probability of me ever sailing a 55 are slim to nill. However I still like to watch and learn as much as possible. Your vessel is practical. You know how she responds to your calculations and equipment. It obviously takes a few Brain Cells to sail in the open seas. Its nice to be free with your adventures and set backs . Thomas if you’re not an expert then what does that make just about any other sailor who doesn’t have his masters papers. Haven’t you been sailing since a kid in 1 digit age, that kind of makes you someone to listen to and certainly learn from your experience and wisdom, which we all appreciate.

Wouldn't it be more fun, i'll admit less practical, to have a small jetski in that garage? You say you spend most of your time at Anker right? Also, with all that space a movie room would be nice.
Actually been thinking about a jet ski but it’s so noisy and most sailors hate them playing around. Being mostly alone I would not need much more. And already have a backup dinghy on deck. I have slept on a madras in the garage once. Was at a beautiful spot with amazing flat water. Waking up and looking at a white beach was not wrong

Yes I agree with you, I do have to say that last year I had to take care for a 56 ft Oyster.
In my experience 56 ft is too much, maintenance wise, to single hand.
Single sail I think an 72 ft would be my max.

I enjoyed your video. I don't actually share your view - i prefer small and simple - but I understand why you have made your choices and they're clearly the right choices for you. I learn more from someone who has different opinions to mine than I learn from someone who always agrees with me. (That's why I learn things from my wife :-) )

remember....a solo sailor ---without a safety tether----only falls off once :(
Every fail can and will be deadly!
Even if you are tethered and has crew as well!
I know of cases when tethered ppl got drowned.
Better advice for Thomas would be to add another lifeline and even a net as his cockpit is very open.

Thank you Thomas for sharing this valuable insights. Your 55' has a teak deck, But you stated that your dream boat has no teak deck. Why ? May be I am wrong, but I think that teak deck will provide a better heat insulation for the saloon/cabins under hot sun. What you consider here?

Mathematically one would expect maintenance costs to exponentially increase with size
The increase in Volume and surface area are not linear with the length. Things like sail area , and area to paint increase in proportional to the length squared. Rig size follows sail size. ....
Yeah it’s crazy how much more this is than a 45” I also believe the production volume plays a part as it’s obviously larger numbers using same spare parts in the mass volume size 40-46 foot

I could afford a boat big enough to live aboard IF I continued working but I don’t know how much time owning and solo sailing a 55 footer would leave me to actually do some work and earn money…Also I don’t know how much of the maintenance and boat projects I should be doing myself and how much I should be delegating, considering that I make around 100$/h after tax and deductions. Would I be saving money by working less for my clients and doing more for the boat or would I be better off to delegate most or all boat-work and to concentrate on making money?…
It’s absolutely interesting reflections your sharing. There is no blueprint in this, due to many factors like location only to mention one. Some places the needed experience or expertise is not available. And unfortunately many places it’s better to do things yourself. Some places you will even have no other alternative than sort out things yourself. In a remote place money will help you nothing. The running costs on a 55 is 2 times higher than on a 49 foot yacht. I have covered this topic in several different episodes on this channel.

Hello Thomas. Trying to recover the vidéo where you explain the pro and cons of having à wooden deck and all the points you wanted... can you help finding it?
Hi Laurent, I think it could be episode 43 but can’t remember I ever went to deep into details about it. I could make an entire video only about pro & cons with teak deck, artificial teak deck etc. However main reason for why I did not want it if I could choose is the increase of maintenance. For older yachts before they started with vacuum gluing teak deck is a nightmare no matter what some try to say. Sooner or later the screws that puncture the skin of your deck will eventually start leaking. Trying to find the spot where the water comes in is a challenge. Some modern yachts have very thin teak, plantation teak that’s not so good, and some even a type of plywood/teak sandwich. At least it’s easier to rip off and you will never see any leaks because of the teak deck. It’s beautiful when maintained and also insulate inside a bit from the heat. Artificial teak however like the one you see on yachts like Amel is beautiful and little maintenance but works the wrong way in terms of insulation. It makes it so hot inside the cupboards under deck you can fry eggs there.
So it’s pro & cons with everything

Thank you 🙏🏻 Yes I live full time onboard on my forth year now. Before this part time, and before that again sailing my whole life.
@@SailingwithThomas So your plan is to spend your life onboard? Perhaps a personal question (forget if delicate) but do you live on your economy or do you have revenues? CZcams seems not enough yet. (this question because I now evaluate the economical aspect of this life style for myself, so any information welcome!)
CZcams gives nothing and have not even turned on adds. I dont see the point to bother my viewers for so litle money. This lifestyle is ridiculous expensive and it’s always something not in the budget like Covid... I have a budget and planning to do the full circle. If the money last or I would have to either go back home for work or come up with something.

Have to very disagree with you in this case)) With the same budget you can go to slightly used high quality 45-48ft yacht, will be faster, more comfortable and almost no repair) Easier to manage as well) I do know many boats very well unfortunately and fortunately)) But your videos are great, thank’s for effort!))
I do not believe there is many 45-48ft boat faster than his Bavaria 55ft beside racing one (which sacrifice everything to speed). Simply because boat speed is mostly linked to sail area versus weight. Bigger boat means more sail area but the overall weight do not increase as much. Go on production boat website and you can see that going from 40ft to 45ft, 45ft to 50ft ... only add few hundred kg to displacement. However, sail area growth is much more important (several meter square) when going from 45ft to 55ft.
Moreover the hull speed is higher with a longer boat. While you can go over hull speed, going over means you start planning which require a significant sail power (total force resulting from the wind) to overcome the bow wave.
When it comes to Thomas, he wanted a dingy garage and i do not know any 45-48ft boat with that feature.
By the way thank you Thomas for sharing your adventure and personal opinions with all of us. We all learn from each others experiences.
Well, that is very simplified view on things - my main point of commenting. Sharing personal view and experience is a good thing, if not starting general statements.
Regarding the boat - Bavaria’s are particularly slow, as hull is designed around accommodation, not waterlines - as all big production brands do, targeting charter market. Simply speaking those boats are fat, with low stability and overall balance, especially in big seastate. The hulls are torsionally flexy, and hardware used just to comply with certification - why the breakages, etc. The list is long..)) Do you you really believe, that somebody is ready to pay a lot more (for a new) than Bavaria or a like, just for finer furniture?))

I couldn’t find another model of ~55 foot production yacht with a dinghy garage and twin rudders available in reasonable numbers on the brokerage market for under $500k. Did you look at anything else besides the Bavaria?

So what's the yearly maintenance on the 55'?
Thats hard to say... I guess in a year I will have more data to give a trustworthy figure spread out over five years. Some costs are annually and some are every ten years or so. Like refitting of all standing rigging right now would be wrong to put into only a years running cost. But it’s a lot....
