      I have a question about Halo wouldn't it have been more effective to have hundreds of small MAC cannons in turrets because hundreds of smaller rounds hitting a shield would have had the same or more mass then one or even 2 of the larger MAC rounds and have also caused more damage to the shields system

    I always saw the Snowspeeders as the epitome of Rebel "We're screwed but let's try it anyway" tech. I saw them as like tugs for Hoth that they strapped guns to and said "Good luck lads see you on the other side".

    Something everyone needs to remember with Star Wars and "Cargo Haulers", Repulsor Beds are a thing. The function of the T-47 was the use the Harpoon and Tow Cable to literally tow hovering flatbeds and trailers of cargo behind them. you literally see this very concept used in Star Wars Rebels Season 1 when Imperials are using the 74-Z Speeder Bike, yes, those crotch rockets from Endor, to move pallets of cargo on repulsor beds, that would have a total mass well in excess of several time's the bike's own mass. So calling something a Cargo-Anything, does not instantly apply that it means "Internal" Cargo Space.

    • @ironcladnomad5639

      It's kind of amazing to think a sliver of the Imperial war machine was harassed and brought down on Hoth by a small group of flying tugs.

  • @wbnc66
    @wbnc66 Před 5 lety +134

    One advantage the T47 has...its manufactured using a civilian airframe, and surplus hardware.. so you can get parts for it without alerting Imperial snoops... also they are small and would be easy to smuggle onto a world where a rebel garrison was hiding out to defend against such things as imperial scouts, chicken walkers, transports, and hovertanks...A flight of T-47s could be based well outside of a colony or in very remote areas fly at low altitude to a target area below treetop levels hit with a decent punch. Then run like a bunny back to remote areas under the cover of trees, and terrain, which would make pursuit by fighters tricky. ( Think SAS attacks on German airfields in WWII, using machine gun armed jeeps and land rovers)

    • @builder396
      @builder396 Před 5 lety +21

      somehow Im imagining the Snowspeeder just going into a colony, grappling cargo containers that are out in the open, and then towing them back to the base for supplies, while the pilots just say "Yoink!"

      William Byrd. Especially on a world were these craft are already common place, an extra crate of or two of parts here an there would go completely unnoticed by anyone. Also with many of these moving around, it would be hard to tell which ones on the sensors was the real target. Fighters or other craft responding to an attack would be confused as to which ones to follow if the attackers just blended in to the traffic.

    • @wbnc66
      @wbnc66 Před 5 lety +9

      I hadn't thought of using ground traffic as sensor camo...just a another perk to these underpowered under gunned"useless gnats" just from a technical and tactical point of view kind of wimpy...but if ya look at some non technical, strategic and tactical aspects...they seem a lot more useful .
      all this talk has me imagining an Imperial convoy suddenly beginning to explode as a flight of T47s painted up to resemble yard tugs or delivery vehicles burst out of an old warehouse district to shoot up the supply and troop carriers then heads down a busy transit way heading for the wilderness...Speeder bikes and TIE Fighters screaming in to pursue.
      The TIE fighters have to break off due to buildings bridges and then trees, while the speeder bikes have to swap shots with the rear gunner of the fleeing T47s..all the time the commander is swamped by reports of vehicles that look like the fleeing vehicles all over the place.
      a nice visual sequence of Speeders and speeder bikes going ballistic down crowed streets, though alleyways, then out into the forests as the Tie Fighters come streaming in for occasional strafing funs through the overhead cover....
      Then a nice climatic scene where the t47s run out of trees and have to break into the open ... TIEs in hot pusuit... just as they get in range the lead TIE explodes and a flight of T65 X-wings. or Headhunters rips into the pursuing imperials.
      I'd pay to see that LOL...

    • @davidtherwhanger6795
      @davidtherwhanger6795 Před 5 lety +4

      @@wbnc66 I tend to go the more sneaky route. A small group of about 4 or 5 speeders with camo'd, snap-on weaponry. In amongst many ordinary ones delivering stuff to an imperial base of some sort (rocket pods are my favorite). These once inside the defenses suddenly drop their camo like an old Q-ship and launch their payload at their targets. Before the guards can respond and in the confusion of regular ones running, the attackers make their escape to pre-arranged wharehouses where the weapons pods are quickly removed and new cargo is attached so they blend back into the back ground as legit cargo haulers while the imperials search for them in vain.

    Something I would have loved to see in ESB. The rebels entangle a second walker with the tow cable trick, but the crew recognizes the tactic and stop moving. Though immobilized, the walker is still very dangerous. Worse, the walker deploys its compliment of snow troopers to cut the cables and free the walker. Further hitting home the fact that the Rebels can't win, they can only slow down the Imperial forces.

    • @christopherbordelon5960
      @christopherbordelon5960 Před 5 lety +2

      That wouldnt work either, there are two spots on the AT AT that are very vunerable to Blaster fire as they are not armored. The first is right behind the head of the AT AT where it connects to the Cargo Hold. If you blast there it will cause an explosion and severe the head from from the AT AT. The other place is to the rear of the AT AT between the rear legs. That is the fuel tank for the entire AT AT and some well aimed blast will cause this think to explode. Also if you were to release the snow troopers, exactly what the AT AT's did to the Rebels is what the T-47 would do to the snow troopers not to mention the Rebels already had troops on the ground so it wouldnt be hard to pick them off

    What they should have done is 1 of 2 things if not both.1 They should have brought more ships to bear on echo base. They could certainly spare the numbers. At this point, they could either overpower the planetary shield with a brute force attack or wait them out while outside the range of that ion cannon. The other thing they could have done is send a small force of highly trained commandos to sabotage the shield generator. They definitely had enough skilled personnel at this point. Doing both of these would be extremely prudent as the large fleet would draw focus away from the commando squad. I have to say though, I was a big fan of the snow speeder design and still am.

    I can't imagine that the tow cable trick against AT-ATs would have worked more than once, maybe even twice, before the Empire or AT-AT crews got smart and added modifications to AT-ATs to keep the tow cable trick from working. The simplest solution would be to put cutters on the front of each leg, similar to what the Allies equipped jeeps with to counter wires strung across a road at neck level. They wouldn't even need to be to super sharp, just have a basic edge and the power of the walker's legs moving would do the rest.

It has a small story that I thought would be just a small part of the game, but actually develops into something bigger. It was made for the same developers who created the old Galaxy on Fire, and I think that it became what GoF 3 never succeeded to be. Anyway, I would really enjoy if you just could take a peek on it. • @Justanotherconsumer
    @Justanotherconsumer Před 5 lety

    I’m baffled at the idea that the tow cable trip was an innovation in the heat of the moment rather than a specific tactic explicitly intended in the design (the AT-AT wasn’t exactly a surprising foe to face). There’s very little reason to include the harpoon gun on the already overloaded craft otherwise.

  • @Zergonapal
    @Zergonapal Před 5 lety

    You would think the Rebel engineers would have known that the cannons on the speeder weren't enough to penetrate an AT-AT armour so honestly I don't know why they didn't have other options prepared like proton rockets or more high powered cannons. I mean the leadership did know a ground attack was inevitable if the Empire couldn't initiate an orbital bombardment right?

  • @jtroopa
    @jtroopa Před 5 lety

    ... That is strange that the Empire would use a ground force without some sort of air support. Even if they’re not designed for it, a simple squadron of TIE fighters might’ve been enough to ward off the airspeeder attack.
    Or, y’know, use some TIE bombers to take out the shield generator.
    Instead it looks like the Empire was planning for Hoth to be a protracted ground battle instead of a hasty retreat by the Alliance.

    • @williammagoffin9324
      @williammagoffin9324 Před 5 lety

      Contemporary air defenses at the time of Hoth might make ground strikes by unshielded snubfighters very bloody affairs. Imagine a battlefield where ground forces can engage any target in their line of sight at near light speed velocities with laser cannons and the idea of air strikes becomes very dangerous (remember the Rebels at Echo Base had weapons emplaced that could knock out Imperial Star Destroyers, I can imagine they had ones that could handle a TIE bomber too). TIEs are very likely good at taking care of civilian targets or hounding isolated Rebel ground troops on the run but against prepared defenses, their lifespan would be considerably lower. IRL we are seeing that precision artillery with guided munitions deployed at the company or even squad level is taking the place of air strikes as even man-portable air defenses are getting sufficiently good to take care of attacking bombers or helicopters; I could see that by the time Star Wars type weapons come into existence having heavily armored ground vehicles is the only thing you can hope to advance on the enemy with, we were almost there during the Cold War with the IFV and the idea that infantry was going to fight from inside an armored box on tracks because the battlefield was going to be filled with so much radiation and poison gas that nothing else was feasible.

  • @evrint
    @evrint Před 5 lety

    If you harpoon an AT-AT's leg, and then start wrapping around the other legs in order to cable trip it, you'd have to make the cable taut to fully restrict the walker's leg movement. So in order to make that cable taut, you'd have to keep your speeder flying fairly slow so that you don't give your snowspeeder a sudden high speed jerk that rips out the tow cable and renders all your wrapping work for nothing, right?

      the main reason for this was the Shield generator. High-speed aircraft would just slam into it like a brick wall, yet slow, lumbering walkers can walk right through. (points to the Clone Wars series for better explanations.) Had Ozle not been an idiot, they would have gotten the drop on them and had the air support they needed, resulting in the battle being over a lot faster than it was.

Even when a vehicle or other object is not in use and presumably, shut down to conserve fuel or shut down the object for maintenance, it still floats in the air. The only time you see anything with a repulsor is when it is destroyed. How can anything with repulsors possibly stay in the air 24/7 (or whatever the local timeframe is) without ever shutting down and resting on the ground?

    it never made sense to me that they used T47s to fight at Hoth then the pilots evacuated in their T65s, if the X-Wings were there, had vastly superior firepower (laser canons are several times as powerful as blaster canons) and simular manouverability and speed in atmosphere why not use the X-Wings, they were designed to operate in space so would be designed to handle cold, would nto require refitting for cold weather, they could have killed AT-ATs without needing such dangerous tactics and would have lost fewer pilots because the X-Wing is both better sheilded and harder to hit.
    I suppose this was a case where looks cool is more important than makes sense.
