Unfortunately that's accurate, there's lots of people who are incredibly smart as kids and read a lot and then get hung up on something else and end up on drugs.
Gretchen calls it "a tendency to over-commit". It is a trait more common in people that we realize. And it is greatly misunderstood. A lot of people see this trait negatively as a potential to become an addict. Though that may be correct, these people are also positively inspirational because they have incomparable determination and perseverance.

She is definitely smart enough to test out of her classes, I think considering that she doesn't need to be in them her parents and the principal could probably grant her special permissions maybe..?? There were some classes I didn't have to take in middle school/elementary school and in high school sometimes I was allowed to spend class time in the library (though it didn't happen that often) (or like, as often as I wanted) --but also some schools also have really low expectations and almost expect kids to skip classes? I remember one day I accidentally missed class because I was in the library, I ran to apologize to my teacher and he was surprised I even bothered to apologize--in the other side of that coin very specialized schools (i've heard) are very accommodating for kids with special needs, weather it's cause they're advanced or behind for their grade. (But I agree with the other person, she probably goes to most of her classes most of the time)

You mean she has a mental disorder? That's difficult to diagnose as a kid. She may have the makings of one. Actually a lot of the time highly intelligent people [who may lack emotional intelligence, lack a development in social skills, and may even fall closer toward one side of the spectrum of autism than a regular person] may be mis-diagnosed. I have read some of the tendencies and symptoms of certain mental disorders and didn't really think them to be at all alarming. But when it becomes a case where self-harm or harming others is involved, coupled with a lack of empathy, that's dangerous territory for anyone.
I'm the library kid of our local library. I'm always there, reading, and nobody talks to me. Only difference is that I like to read outside as well, so I don't spend all of my time inside.
