Re: the etymology - The name of the perfume, XERYUS, has no etymological connection to the Greek mythological deity, Nereus (ΝΗΡΕΥΣ), a primordial sea-god, also known in some sources - notably Homer (no, not THAT Homer...) - as, “The Old Man of the Sea”. XERYUS was actually inspired by the Ancient Iranian rendition for the name of the Persian King (or, “King of Kings” - “Shahashan” in Old Persian) Xerxes I (c. 518-465 BCE). He was the fourth monarch of the Achaemenid dynasty (reigned c. 486-465 BCE), famous for his attempted invasion of Greece in 480/479 BCE (he commanded the Persian forces at both the celebrated Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BCE, against King Leonidas of Sparta and his “300”, and at the naval engagement of Salamis in the following year, where the Persian forces were finally defeated and permanently withdrew from the Greek mainland). Together with all his other accomplishments, Hubert de Givenchy was a keen student of history; at the time that he commissioned this new men’s perfume for his eponymous House, he had been reading Herodotus’ History of The Persian Wars and, inspired by this epic historical account, chose to give the original XERYUS (launched in 1986) the name of the proud and haughty Persian King, ruler of the greatest and most powerful empire of his time. M. de Givenchy wished to convey a sense of oriental exoticism with his new creation, so he opted for the more obscure and mysterious-sounding version of the name (which closely approximated the Ancient Iranian original) rather than its better-known Hellenized version, Xerxes. “Xerxes” is a transliteration derived from the Greek rendition of the name, ΞΕΡΞΗΣ, which is itself a corruption of the original Old Persian form, XS(h)ARYAS(h)A; the etymology of the name in Persian is, “ruler over heroes, or master of warriors”. Xerxes I is also famously represented in the Biblical Book of Esther, where he is identified as “Ahas(h)erus”, the Hebrew version of the name, which is also connected to the Akkadian, “XIS(h)I ARS(h)A and the Aramaic, “XS(h)IRS(h), as well as to the Egyptian, KHAS(h)AYARUS(h)A. ADDENDUM: XERYUS came a few years in the wake of similarly ancient-themed mainstays of ‘80s “powerhouse” male perfumery, like Chanel’s ANTAEUS and YSL’s KOUROS - but no Greek gods or heroes here: only a Persian King of Kings...
I had no clue until recently, I liked a bunch of perfumes from different brands, majority were from Annick Menardo, no clue, but now that I know I'm thrilled for her work, seems that everything she touched is an awesome fragrance, I loved this one, I got it when I was very young because my brother hated it, kept it and used it until being in my 20s and loved it!
Interesting take. Great review as always. I think this was a more playful version of the original. The original bottle design pre formulation juice is truly beautiful.

I'm 22 and I used to wear this in 5th 6th 7th and 8th grade I just bought a bottle on Amazon after purging it this long! This is what I wanted every year for four years for Christmas
I still have a tester sample of this since when I was kid just to trigger me memories with the hope that some day I will decide to buy it!To be honest I never took it seriously until now....I finally bought it and along with it some of my favorite past memories.Ok maybe is not a mastepiece but even I still remember it among so many brands through all these years means that it is something unique and special.A romantic hot oriental smell that can lured anyone nearby like the sirens the sailors in Greek Mythology.
I can't believe you reviewed this fragrance.. I had this in my college days and still have it now ...girls loved it then which made me use it more. .. not a classic put holds a special place in my heart ... keep the reviews coming.. great work as usual

Hey Steven you have reviewed what I call "the Red Monster": I get insanely long sillage (24+hrs) and tremendous projection (I can fill a room if I overspray) with this beast. I usually go one spray on each arm and one on my chest and that's it.
Very nice scent! I have not found anything similar yet in the fragrance game.

it happened again.. i smelled this in the store and didnt care for it.. then when i got home i couldnt stop smelling my arm i loved it so much.. i have to get it.. lol does that ever happen to you where you dont like something at first but then you love it.. that happened to me with A Men as well

I dont agree with U! Xeryous was awful! I couldnt stand this smell - it was sooo agressive! Xeryous Rouge is one of the long lasting fragrancec Ive wver used. Amazing smell and very unique
I've just seen that this has got a makeover and added to the "Les Parfums Mythiques" line. Do you know if Givenchy has a history of changing the formulation in these circumstances?
This is the second review that I've disagreed with you. You seemed to be preoccupied with the Jacomo de Jacomo wannabe called Xeryus. Let go of that 80s fragrance and enjoy XR for what it is - a soft citric, spicy, tonka beany fragrance. So creamy and soft after 2 hours.
And you need to get ahold of the vintage formulation. The reformulated version (what you have) is smokey and metallic...such a disappointment that it doesn't smell like the original release.
I love Givenchy Pi and Pour Homme. I really want to try Xeryus Rouge.

I have xeryus the original not a lot of reviews or people have it. You may not know but they originally named it with a k play on curious but YSL sued for the similarities to their Kuros. Question my spelling I don't have that.

Hey Steven, i dont know if you have the original Xeryus (vintage version in the black bottle
with the black cap) but i hear you mentioned it in this video. This was sorta my signature scent back when it first came out back in the mid 80's during my clubbing/partying days and it was love at first sniff for me (I still own a bottle to this day and i hope to continually own a bottle). I would love to get a "professional" opinion on this juice and it seems that I have never seen one on Tube review of this "sleeper" scent. Lavender/amber/violet/oak moss beast with a touch of leather. It is
really a great fragrance, though probably dated...this is probably a hate it or love it type scent but i love it.

From my understanding the original formulation is vastly different than the one you picked up.
I wore xeryus back in the 80’s but never tried this one.

It was discontinued for a long, long time. Trust me, I used to hunt bottles of the origanal down until it was clear they went off and smelled bad. Funnily enough, the last bottle I got in mid noughties was not EDT, but splash on and that smells good still. I stopped looking for it for years after. Now it's available everywhere it seems. So quite when they re-continued it, or how it now smells, I don't know. Tempted to get a new bottle and see.

I know the perfumes who make these flankers are trying to make money and I can admire that but at the same time it's a waste of money on their part along with anyone who might be nieve enough to make these purchases. This is a homerun fragrance. I have yet to encounter a women that wasn't drawn in by this scent. I was approached by 3 women today inquiring to what I was wearing. I will admit I don't like to tell as I have a secret mix that apply 3 xeyrus to 1???

Best review on this fragrance - very well done! I agree with your explanation of its notes and how it smells. And you are correct this does not have the best projection. The only thing I disagree is to me, this is very unique. Although it's not the most complex there is something very intriguing about it... perhaps the cactus. I currently have it in my winter rotation your review convinced me to try it in the summer. Out of my 200+ fragrances this is one of a few that I bought a backup bottle just in case it gets reformulated.

I’ve never been a fan of this one along with Pi . It’s got a weird sweetness, cloying . It’s pungent but this one falls short on my tastes 😕. I like it but not quite to consider a further purchase. But the OG Xeryus 👌! That’s a SCENT!
