SURF'S UP is an animated action-comedy that delves behind the scenes of the high-octane world of competitive surfing. The film profiles teenage Rockhopper penguin Cody Maverick (Shia LaBeouf), an up-and-coming surfer, as he enters his first pro competition. Followed by a camera crew to document his experiences, Cody leaves his family and home in Shiverpool, Antarctica to travel to Pen Gu Island for the Big Z Memorial Surf Off. Along the way, Cody meets Sheboygan surfer Chicken Joe (Jon Heder), famous surf promoter Reggie Belafonte (James Woods), surf talent scout Mikey Abromowitz (Mario Cantone), and spirited lifeguard Lani Aliikai (Zooey Deschanel), all of whom recognize Cody's passion for surfing, even if it's a bit misguided at times. Cody believes that winning will bring him the admiration and respect he desires, but when he unexpectedly comes face-to-face with a washed-up old surfer (Jeff Bridges), Cody begins to find his own way, and discovers that a true winner isn't always the one who comes in first.

The fact that the trophy scene was improv is the most iconic thing ever
It literally sounds like they’re just talking, being themselves. The characters match them so much. This movie is so perfectly made.
Most was improve love it. Wish more movies were like this where they just be themselves. Just like the movies grownups. They were just themselves on set and did whatever they wanted.
We need a chicken joe standalone movie, maybe even a chicken joe origins.
I remember this movie actually and it's pretty fantastic, the animation is very realistic with some nice character designs, a memorable story and some relatable characters, this could be they're best film yet and I didn't know Shia was in this movie, the man with that famous meme, wow, this is unexpected.

Shia LaBeouf as Cody Maverick is underrated. Too bad we didn't hear his voice in Surf's Up 2. But if we ever had a Surf's Up 3, then sign him and Zooey up again, Sony!

@@your_moms_house110 He's like, had a lot of ups and downs. Sorta gone insane like a lot of child actors do. He seems to have mellowed out now though, and is pursuing projects he wants to which is nice to see.

One of the best casting in animation history
When we get a glimpse of Shia's face when acting with Jon and Zooey, you see this nice sample of Shia's actual acting show. He's a great actor.

Ah, it makes so much sense that Shia would do this movie... A lot of it was ad lib! He's so good at that. Did a lot of improv on Even Stevens, as well.
I don't care what people said about this movie then or now, it's underrated is as underrated does. It's made up but realistic, a documentary but not being boring, plenty of action but also relaxing to watch, simple straightforward story but still strong subplots. And the animation holds up incredibly well almost 20 years later. It's a shame the sequel was not hyped up more and released in theatres, it could have really gotten this one more appreciation it deserves.

Just hearing Cody talk, I immediately thought of Shia's comedic timing and banter. I searched who voiced Cody and I was brought here. IT IS Shia. I knew it! He's a really good actor. He's got a signature way of talking that identifies him.
