Also a lot on the crime and desperation of impoverished environments including the inflow of drugs leading to gang violence created a volatile hostile environment,ent that has been destroying itself slowly from the inside for decades.
My math teacher talks about this all the time, strangely I never knew what it was. He lived in LA and he had just gotten out of school when this was taking place (he was in 8th grade). He told us that it was the only moment in his life that he truly thought he was going to die. No police, no military, no nothing. No one to help a 14 year old boy who was completely defenseless. He said he saw multiple dead bodies and everything around him was on fire, let’s hope nothing like this happens again.

This day changed my life and my beliefs about people. I never felt what I did before that day. I know I can’t be the only one. There wasn’t a person I knew in Los Angeles who wasn’t outraged by the Rodney King verdict before this, after it hardly seemed to matter. It seemed clear to a child that the police used excessive force, their job was simply to conduct an arrest, they were culpable, they were the “bad guys” . after this my whole concept of good guys vs bad guys was affected. whatever the justification, anyone who would do that to a random stranger is clearly a “bad guy” and suddenly I was confronted by the fact that a significant portion of people don’t have the same morals or sense of right and wrong which seemed strange since at the time we were a predominantly Judeo Christian nation regardless of race or whether you were religious. I know this sounds crazy now that we’ve seen so much senseless violence and hate, I didn’t believe in evil people at the time, just people who did evil things in response to their circumstances, etc... Even if the police were told to evacuate this area, why couldn't they immediately close off Florence and Normandie? They could have closed both streets at a safe vantage point far from the main violence occurring at the main intersection. This could have perhaps prevented some of the assaults on innocent motorists unaware of the dangers in the area.

They owe it to the citizens of Los Angeles to at least monitor the situation and not allow innocent bystanders to enter a very dangerous intersection. Would it have been to difficult to enforce control through bean bags, tear gas or other non lethal means? At the very least close down access to Florence and Normandie Avenues from the perimeter. Amidat is right, it was incompetence and many people were severely injured and almost died because of it.
The most heartbreaking part is that even after all of this happened Rodney's first statement was that he just wanted people to get along.

This day changed my life and my beliefs about people. I never felt what I did before that day. I know I can’t be the only one. There wasn’t a person I knew in Los Angeles who wasn’t outraged by the Rodney King verdict before this, after it hardly seemed to matter. It seemed clear to a child that the police used excessive force, their job was simply to conduct an arrest, they were culpable, they were the “bad guys” . after this my whole concept of good guys vs bad guys was affected. whatever the justification, anyone who would do that to a random stranger is clearly a “bad guy” and suddenly I was confronted by the fact that a significant portion of people don’t have the same morals or sense of right and wrong which seemed strange since at the time we were a predominantly Judeo Christian nation regardless of race or whether you were religious. I know this sounds crazy now that we’ve seen so much senseless violence and hate, I didn’t believe in evil people at the time, just people who did evil things in response to their circumstances, etc... I hadn’t seen real life evil. These days the media would argue that somehow trying to murder random innocent victims to avenge people you are in no way associated with is somehow “social justice” but to me it still makes the individual a P.O.S. And those who support them intellectually weak and morally bankrupt.

Even if the police were told to evacuate this area, why couldn't they immediately close off Florence and Normandie? They could have closed both streets at a safe vantage point far from the main violence occurring at the main intersection. This could have perhaps prevented some of the assaults on innocent motorists unaware of the dangers in the area.
