MAGMA Greatest Group/Band of Our Time
Vložit
- čas přidán 14. 05. 2009
- A short clip of the French group Magma, jamming brilliantly on the final part of De Futura, from the EPOK 2 Mythes et Legendes DVD, offered by Seventh Records. Magma is a legendary group in Europe, currently celebrating their 40th anniversary. Shockingly, they have only a cult following in the USA, but those who like them are absolute fanatics. I describe Magma as follows: the energy of Otis Redding, the spirit of John Coltrane, the brooding depths of Bartok, and a melange of jazz fusion, hard rock, and classical chorale that creates a magic unique unto themselves. Listen to more of this group, and you will be amazed at the variety and spiritual depths of their music. De Futura Hiroshima is far from my favorite work (a little too dark, not all Magma is bleak!), but a good place to start for those who like to rock out.
If this doesn't blow your mind you haven't got one.
thewavingbear AMEN
ボブディランか~い
The most true statement ever.
It's mid
i don't have one because it got blown
For me, Jannik Top is the ideal bass player for Vander's drumming, his sound is just so heavy!
Luke Green He’s soooooo fucking good.
tunes his bass like a cello
FUCKING A
@Izno Iznogoud didn't Top do session work for Celine Dion?
Yh jannick is a sick bassist, but don't really enjoy his compositions as a part of magma as much as ganders - Though I agree he does suit the style, but I prefer philippe bussonnet on the whole
Wow! First day ever hearing this band! Wow! And yes! My life is getting better as of today.
This is a true modern art! It has best of classical, jazz and rock music. And they present it in such unique way, they sound as one...completely serving to music and coresponding to each other perfectly. Vander is yet to be discovered as composer and drummer....because he is ahead of his time.
See I hear Metal🤘🤘
@@MrSmallpoxSatan well, you can even hear metal...
I bet these guys are extremely congenial and down-to-earth people. You can tell they enjoy their art as much as they've enjoyed sharing it with us for 40+ years. Lives well spent attaining fulfillment through passion, it's a beautiful thing we're seeing here beyond the music.
You have no idea. I asked Christian if I could film him during a short concert/showcase of Offering in a shop I worked in 1995. He smiled and simply answered : "With great pleasure !". This guy is a galactic treasure.
@@chucku00 wow, that's really cool, the world needs more Mr Vanders in it
Well said!!
The drummer has connections to neo nazis is what I heard.
Went to see them in London 1987, Steve Davies sent me! So good I went again the next night!! BRILLIANT!! Never to be forgotten nights!
Steve Davies and his band are supporting Magma for two dates at The Garage in London next June. I just got a ticket for the second night, cannot wait !
if you know about these and most people don't... then you know they are one of the best bands of all time. Most drummers do a beat and do fill ins and rolls to fill in. This guy is doing the fill ins and rolls ALONG WITH the main beat. Who does that! Who can.
must be a big influence for "Ruins" band! i can hear the lineage
La plus belle chouette formation jamais réunis la grande classe merci Magma
I saw Magma in tbe mid-1970s at the time of the release of Mekamic Destructiv Commandoh, appearing in the middle of an all day special at tbe London Roundhouse headlined by Caravan. Unbeleivably intense, they had an effect ln the audience i have never seen before, many people blown away and overawed. More intense than King Crimson. Half hour so from Christkan Vander, duetting with himself comvbining falsetto vocals in his own space people (but very teutonic sounding) langhage, with a drum solo of high level technical mastery that seemed about 25 minutes long, all on a dark stage with one green spotlight on his wolf like face, then a 15 minute bass solo from Jannik Top, all glissandos and thundering full chords, and the rest of the set dominated by the extraordinary operatic vocals of Klaus Blasqviz, a tall man in a black beard and long cape with a vocal range fron high falserro to
the deep croak of a Tibetan monk, also playing a huge rack of metal percussion , gongs and bells. It was way too intense for people in the audience who were tripping!
I saw them again a week later at the Marquee Club on Wardour Street, a very different vibe on a small close club stage but equally intense.
Definitely not music for a snowflake! The strongest musical experience of any kind i ever had, followed closely by King Crimson in LA in 1999, the double--trio format.
Awesome Great throwback I remember Magma from Way Back Very Cool Band
I saw Magma in London in the mid 80's - I was in my 20's. They blew me away then and now, 30 years later, they blow me away still.
Their intensity, their authenticity is unmatched in my opinion. A little bit of a cult so I'm a little wary :) but I still am in awe of them.
How is Magma a cult? lol
I am still recovering from a Queen Elizabeth Hall performance, late 90s. Craziest, most affecting thing I have ever seen and heard.
Genius Vander. Totally possessed, completely 'in' the moment. It's because of this that I say this is more than music. This is evidence of reaching a transcendental state through sheer focus. I've been fortunate to see other musicians reach this state on stage, it is a beautiful thing to see.
There`s never been a video on CZcams with a title that would so accurately reflect the content.
The greatest band of our time, pure artistry, Human emotional communication and expression in its highest form in a musical context.
One of the great things about Magma is they prove you don't have to be incredibly loud, distorted, or downtuned to be intense.
Much like Zappa, Christian Vander pushes the shit out of his musicians, but doesn't ask of them anything he's not capable of doing.
Zpa
can't be more agree with your comment; this band is out of this world. Saw them like 30 times live. Long live Christian Vander
Its my life since 1973 and it will be for the rest of my life "the" music
Vander is adsolute percussion its like if Buddy Rich had a cosmic twin , the intensity of Vander and MAGMA is astonishing, exuberant, prog, fusion, Berg, Bartók, Wagner , every prog band you've known including King Crimson. God I wish peeps would open their ears to MAGMA, wow!!!!!!
Think I just did. Late to the party. Here from "Dupree's Paradise" by Nasal Retentive Orchestra 2007
If Vander is Buddy Rich's "cosmic twin" he must have changed his mind about matched grip on the drumsticks, Rich had very negative views on it compared to the traditional drumstick grip. As a drummer myself, I never agreed with his arguments against a matched grip. BTW, I have loved Magma/Vander for years, it is great to see them still going strong.
Incredible Musicians in an Incredible Band, in a musical world they created. Epic!
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is amazing :) I don't have much else to say, this is beyond my language
Thats why he invented Kobaian.
I hope one day I can be as passionate and possessed towards something like Christian Vanders is towards the drum set
LOL
Where are all of the people who have been listening to Magma since the 70s? I want to hang out with them and hear what they're listening to now.
I only discovered them 6 years ago.
I DID hang out with a couple members of Magma, in 2002! I believe they are, in fact, aliens. They came to our hotel room, and smoked ALL of our weed. Which was a fuck ton. And we thanked them for it.
I was on their 50's anniversary gig in Renne's Opera, Jannick Top's son was on the bass, it was a mystical experience.
The first Magma record I heard, Udu Wudu.
One of their best
I saw them on this tour, there was an air of reverence that permeated the entire evening. Christian Vander and Magma are indeed the most important band of our times. Musicianship of the highest order by every member of the band, it didn't take me long to realize that I was in the presence of greatness.
How did i make it to forty and never hear of this band?! Amazing!
hahaha I love jannick top's laugh at 0:40 like "lmao here we go" lol
Nebëhr Gudahtt, the great preacher, sent me here
My best friend turned me onto Magma when I was 16 around 1982. I wish I could afford to see them live in Europe. If they ever came to the US, I have never heard about it. Incredible band. There is nothing like them.
No band as mighty as MAGMA.
🔥🙌🏻🔥
The greatest band that ever walked this planet.

Prodigieux, incomparable, transcendant. Merci Christian, Jannick, Klaus et tous les autres.
in awe! 😀
hear that bass drum? that's what my heart is doing right now.
I lived in France from 1969 to 1978 and Magma was awesome!
I had the privilege of seeing Magma live once. It was the best concert I've ever seen. Unbelievable intensity, precision, stamina, and probably the most original band I can think of, all using standard rock music instrumentation.
Saw them maybe 30 times since 1976
Always astounding.
@@jpslebassiste With a name like yours, you must be a fan of Jannick Top! I know I am...
@@gnomechonky I am ! Saw him with Magma in 1976, it was a life changing experience

How many Magma fans know of Univeria Zekt? Magma went undercover in 1972 and released an album titled "Unnamables" under the guise of Univeria Zekt.... Just curious how many knew of this? This album is in the free music archive, and is played a couple of times (#1 and #17) on "Jul's" Progkast podcast
