- The Dallas Mavericks had one of the biggest 2024 NBA trade deadlines with the Daniel Gafford trade and the PJ Washington trade. With the intent of building a competent roster around Luka Doncic that can compete for a championship, getting Daniel Gafford supplies them with a big man that can fit seamlessly alongside Luka Doncic. With the addition of PJ Washington, Luka has a versatile defensive power forward that can space the floor and create for himself off the catch. The Dallas Mavericks needed to make moves, and Grant Williams allowed them to go and get their guys. In a difficult Western Conference, PJ Washington and Daniel Gafford might be just what they needed.

No. PJ shoots even worse than Grant Williams and by all accounts I've heard from Hornets fans he's fat and lazy on defense. And let's be real, Kidd still isn't going to significantly cut Powell's minutes.

They've gotten better in the paint, but they're still at least 3-4 years away from a legitimate run for a ring. At that point Luka might want out. And I'm a Mavs fan.

The mavs were the 2nd biggest trade deadline winners behind the knicks. The mavs getting pj washigton and daniel gafford were great pickups especially with gafford. They desperately needed to improve their backup center play and now they got one of the most underrated centers in the league imo
I would say first impact wise

Their defense is number 2 in the nba when Luka,Kai,DJ,Green, and lively are on the floor together. It’s when they are on the bench that their defense falls off. So this was great for the Mavs as it gives them defensive depth now.
P J can really be a pick n pop threat they will have a top 10 offense with the new lineup aswell

Yeah it’s crazy cuz Stevenson ended up being the most valuable piece in the championship run. Just seeing the names now you wouldn’t have thought that.
Finally, someone who gets it on this platform. You are 100 percent correct on why grant had a higher 3-point percentage dude was always wide open then his shot left him for some reason, rumor was he was not used to playing heavy minutes there for he got tired and shot took a hit. PJ and Gaff going to have so much space it's going to be exciting to see how they grow here in Dallas.

I would start josh green over DJJ. More consistent 3 point shooter, better passer, faster, and josh is usually guarding guards and luka is usually guarding 4’s so we’re not inherently small with josh

As a Lifelong Local Mavs fan I can personally say this is by far the Deepest roster we have ever had... once we get Exum and Lively back fully Healthy this team is going to be SO scary. I promise you nobody wants to see us in the playoffs, we are going to be such a tough out... we finally have 2 full legit units now. This is a Dangerous Squad. Luka, KY, Hardy,THJ, Green, Exum, DJJ, Washington, Kleber, Lively, Gafford. Thats 11 deep and all of them have the skills and talent to start. So many lineup and rotation options for this Squad now. So excited for this 2nd half and teams Future now... we are about to be Lob City 2.0 with Lively, Gafford, DJJ, Washington and Green

Give Luka screen and roll lob threats and rebounders and they can beat anyone. Some media members are far too negative on Dallas... They can score, they just need rebounding and defense. Lively/Gafford at the center rotation will be great.
thats what been saying. the mavericks offense can beat anyone when we take care of the ball and rebound at least competitively with the other team. luka and kyrie are excellent closers in the playoffs as well

Three months later into this experiment so, voice from the future, this article was dead on.... they have done and brought everything you described to a "T"! The only thing you didn't see was Gaff as a starter..... and both guys are the type of players who might not score at all and still have a plus over/under rating because they reek havoc on other offenses..... and when they do score, it's a bonus but, for PJ, he is clutch even when his shot is off.... needless to say, they are two more reasons why the Mavs will now play for a Chip against Boston... Good work, sir!!!

This played out Game 1. Furthermore the team is locked up contractwise for the foreseeable future.
It's interesting to see how certain players can become stars in the right environment with the right team and coaching.
All the pieces are there.What mavs needed the most was to get those 5 rebounds more per game, that block more, make passing harder and to just go at the rim when Luka was doubled. I dont even think defense was such a problem , their starting 5 defense passed the eye test,less so when Green/Lively and DJ were not on the floor. Now in theory PJ and Gafford fill that void and its on the coaching staff to implent a sistem
Finally the Mavs made an awesome move.

If we get Dinwiddie without giving anything up, mavs can run small ball or play big . Imagine this lineup: luka, thj, Washington, lively , gafford. Or small ball: kyrie, luka, Dinwiddie, Washington ,lively. That gives us insane versatility just picking those 3 guys up.

Grant Williams 3 point percentage is kinda inflated because he was shooting around 60% the first month of the season. Over his last 40 games he's shooting 32% from 3.
only 11 on offence because half of the season most of the team players was injured and missed a lot of games and same on defence D Lyve also was missing games

As a wizards fan, I think you are overestimating, how good a defender Daniel Gafford is, he jumps up everything, and he isn’t very physical.
Same for rebounding as the starting Center for the wizards, they are one of the worst rebounding teams in history
