    I had to take a black gorilla suit to a brown wookie suit this year, and I watched a ton of videos, looking for ways to bleach it. Obviously I found the same answers you did about bleach/peroxide. I had to use seven cans of fabric spray paint, in two different shades of brown, but it came out pretty well. Just thought I'd add that since you pointed out that you hadn't tried it on any colored fur, or from dark to lighter. Thanks so much for this video, it really helped!

    Pro Tip: Do all of your spray painting over a cardboard box, so you don't mess up your drive way.

    Air brush would be better but not everyone has one. I've used this spray paint method before. You do have to spray very light coats or it will clump up the fur. I've also lightened colors by diluting acrylic paint with water and soaking the fur in it.

    • @JWoDesigns
      @JWoDesigns  Před rokem +2

      This was made years before I owned an airbrush. I now color all faux fur via airbrush but I try to make tutorials budget friendly & accessible for most people. I haven't tried the acrylic paint soaking method, but I have seen some people try it with decent results!

      @@JWoDesigns Thanks for this. My partner just finished patterning and sowing and now we get to see how much the faux fur is blonde and slighting darker. And I was think maybe we can airbrush it to give it a lighter touch and of course have a reason to take things to the next level with airbrushing for gradients.
      Have you developed any methods since for cleaning/caring for airbrushed faux fur since? Trying to cover all the bases before I commit.

    Wow! Such a great tutorial! I'll have to keep this in mind next time I need to recolor faux fur. I have a light purple faux fur I got at a warehouse sale for super cheap. Since then it closed and now I need a red fur. Unfortunately I won't be able to use this method :(

    Will the fur be matted at all, or no? I was going to do this on a section of black fur.

    • @JWoDesigns
      @JWoDesigns  Před 6 lety +2

      If you keep it brushing the fur while it is drying, it prevents it from matting. Let me know how it works on black fur. I haven't really tried this technique on darker fur.

  • @wowowwowow1289
    @wowowwowow1289 Před 8 lety +2

    idk what your using it for. But its not a very good idea if anything get a airbrush spraypaint will wash out faster and it hardens into clumps

    • @JWoDesigns
      @JWoDesigns  Před 8 lety +1

      I'm just using this for cosplay. I've had it for about 6 months now & the color is still very nice & the fur that is colored is actually quite soft. I think brushing the fur while it's drying helps prevent the clumps. I haven't washed it since I know the paint will wash out.

    Has anyone done this with a sorta beige color? i have the Desert Tan Long Pile fur from Big Z Fabric and i need it to be slightly lighter.. also how would you go about cleaning this? would you have to redo it after a few washings?

    • @JWoDesigns
      @JWoDesigns  Před měsícem +1

      @nerdd0g_yeah I wouldn't recommend traditional washing methods by washing machine.
      Spray with vodka to deodorize or alcohol mouthwash. Spot clean with mild soap/detergent, brush area, air dry, or low on blow dryer.

    So I have a coat with a fur lined hood that's nearly perfect for what I need it for, but the fur is a brown and I need to bring it up to a more gray/white color. I'll need to mask off the jacket and everything but that aside, do you think this is an appropriate method for me? I'm just a little worried about the texture of the fur afterwards since it will be against my skin at some point.

    • @JWoDesigns
      @JWoDesigns  Před 4 lety +1

      That does sound a bit difficult. I would highly recommend trying to seam rip the fur section out and either replacing the fur with the right color or coloring it separately. Since it is such a large section of fur and near the neck, the texture will definitely be stiffer and coarser after using this method to lighten.

    • @ThatOneFemaleGamer
      @ThatOneFemaleGamer Před 4 lety +2

      @@JWoDesigns I was thinking about seam ripping the fur out as an easier alternative to masking the coat off. I'll have to see what prices are for faux fur at my local shop once they reopen (I happen to live really close to Mendels!). I do have some scraps of fake fur to test this method on though.
      Thanks!

    • @JWoDesigns
      @JWoDesigns  Před 7 lety +2

      It won't be as soft as it is originally was, but it's not that bad and brushing while drying really helps keep it soft.

    Do you think this would work just to make a shade of yellow slightly lighter?

    • @JWoDesigns
      @JWoDesigns  Před 3 lety

      It should! You may want to work in light layers and let each layer of paint dry to make sure you get the right shade since paint tends to slightly change colors when dried.

    And tips on dyeing a faux fur rug from navy to a pale grey? Can it be done? I don’t want it to be sticky or transfer coz people will be walking on it daily!

    • @JWoDesigns
      @JWoDesigns  Před 5 lety

      I would definitely NOT use this technique for a rug. The color will not stay due to foot traffic. There honestly is not a way to change a navy rug to pale gray especially since it is faux fur. Bleach will not work at all.

    im late but i have these fuzzy/faux fur leg warmers i needed in more of a pale/highlighter (ish) yellow and it came in more of a mustard yellow, is it possible to lighten it?? How??

    • @JWoDesigns
      @JWoDesigns  Před 2 lety

      Going to be honest, going from a mustardy yellow to highlighter yellow is very very difficult. It's easier to get white fur & dye them highlighter yellow than lighten from a darker yellow. My tutorial works most effectively on slight changes in color. I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help.

      Hi! I don't do fursuits, but spots on fur are best done with an airbrush. You can "paint" them on with the brushing method, but you may want to use an old toothbrush & dip that into watered down acrylic paint and then apply onto the fur.
