Today on Steam Culture, Brent talks about the world's largest steam powered pump and how it helped the Netherlands reclaim land that was once underwater. The majority of the Netherlands sits below sea level which presents the problem of flooding. Through the use of windmill powered pumping (and later steam powered) the Dutch were able to remove the water and use the land.

there is some great steam engines and pumps here in the Netherlands
the "Ir. D.F. Woudagemaal" is a world heritage site, and the largest still functioning steam powered pumping station in the world.
-4 tandem compound, reciprocating steam engines, with poppet valves:
Single acting high pressure cylinder, 0.5 m diameter.
Double acting low pressure cylinder, uni-flow exhaust, 0.85 m diameter.
Stroke: 1.0 m
500 Horsepower, 373 kilowatt
-8 horizontal, double suction, centrifugal pumps: 500 m³ per minute, 125,000 GPM, 180 MGD:
rotational speed: 95 to 115 rpm, impeller diameter 1.70 m.
they have open days, and do scheduled tours all the time. and you can even visit it when its actually pumping. its enough of an event here that they mention on the news when ever they start heating up the boilers.
