There's not many people that can say they've seen the F14 Tomcat flying at an airshow here in the UK. Well I did back in the 80s, and it was an awesome display at the RAF Greenham Common Air Tattoo. Right at the beginning we had a short runway takeoff with the Tomcat going straight up vertical, no kidding, I will never forget that amazing display. Great video!!
One of a kind airplane! They looked so awesome in that delta wing sweep back config! I was always amazed that such a large aircraft could do the things it did, in all the different regimes of flight. There will never be another fighter like the Grumman F-14! I can only dream how cool the super tomcat wouldve been!
I love the Tomcat buy you can t say that nowadays airshows are not as good or even better than this one. Have seen demo of the Grippen? Rafale? Su 37? It s another level and the rythm is insane in comparison witht the Tomcat. Hear me well...I like the Tomcat a lot but performances wise, it is outdated.
The thing we are missing is the power. Tomcat had more than double the power of the legacy hornet, and in this video it really looks like it. All of the fast jets I've seen irl, most powerful was the eurofighter, and that is only just above half the power tomcat has. Tomcat is a magnificent plane, and the size makes it even more a wonder. The thing was cutting edge technology back then, and would probably be as good as the other 4th gen fighters now, but the operating costs were too much. Which sucks. I personally love tomcat over any plane, no matter what. Yes, those 5th gen fighters are impressive, but tomcat is just next level. Yes, maybe gripen can outperform the thing. And yes gripen is also a beauty. But I am still really sad that there is no tomcats in flying condition on display in the western world.

Especially sine the upgrades were already planned and some had taken effect. The F-14D had the same radar as the world famous F-15E Strike Eagle, and it could out carry the F-18 in ordnance, and have a longer range. The engine upgrades were going to give the Tomcat 32000lbs of thrust per engine, around the same as the SR-71's engines, this would also enable it to super-cruise at Mach 1.3, and give it much greater efficiency. It was a big mistake retiring these.

F14 Tomcat forever! Let us all petition the Navy or even the Air Force, for a more advanced version of F14 (Super Tomcat), that is designed with stealth qualities in mind. Such a design for this airplane was already in the works by Grumman, but unfortunately the program was not pursued by the Navy! However, if the American people really ask for this jet back, the Navy or Air force shall probably listen to the nation's request to rebuild a modern and stealth version of this beautiful aircraft, and put it back to service.
