Here's a mistake that I did, although it was a good mistake but people probably should never do it.
I adopted my boy from an adopter, who got him, thin, welt on his back from a cover, welt on his nose from the halter, been left out in the paddock for 7 months. He came from a harness racing stable. 11yo Standardbred gelding. Green to saddle, raced for 8 years. I went out to go see him and got him because
I felt so sorry from him,
I was actually in tears when I saw him. Now dont get me wrong, I still have this sweet hearted giant, I ride him and he is my heart horse, but you really need to think before you go and buy a horse out of pitty for them. I got lucky and he turned out to be an amazing horse, but not all horses are like this and I should not have brought him because i felt sorry for him. Even though I love him so much i just got lucky.

If you know the horse will be a good fit then get them, or if you’re someone like me get them no matter what lmao, but I see what you’re getting at. You should never buy a horse in a split second decision just because you feel bad for it (unless it needs rescued and you can foster. Only exception) or just because you want a horse (I woulda been guilty of this one but thankfully my parents made me wait lol). Good point tho a lot of ppl don’t think ab this one.

I bought a 8yr old Morgan mare the only thing she knew was dragging logs to a portable sawmill,I paid 500.00 for her she was so powerful from logging her muscle development was off the charts, she became a legend in the backcountry,in the arena ,there was nothing she couldn’t do ,rope ,game ,I had so many miles on her back ,we literally became one ,she had enough heart for a dozen horses,we got caught in a snowstorm overnight on a elk hunt, she broke trail for hours in deep snow ,that allowed the other camps to get out too ,we were together for 36yrs when I made the decision to put her down ,it was because she let me know it was time ,after the vet gave her a dose ,we both went down to the ground,I still get choked up thinking about her, friends always tell me I should write a book about our adventures before I die,I miss you,til we meet again BUFF rest up partner we got eternity ahead of us

Gettiing scammed is honestly the biggest thing, that happened with me. We even brought a trainer that loved that horse and did a vet check that day too. For me I do personally have a limit on older horses when purchasing. Yes a horse can act like they are 8 but when they are 20, thats when they start to decline. Like Arthritis pops up etc. Personally, if I was a highschooler so to speak, and is in 4-h or in an Equine team Id personally like one thats 12. You'd want to spend the time when they are both young and old in my opinion

At the beginning of my search (which is still ongoing), I was very strict about not wanting greys but honestly, I've started looking at a few greys that were the perfect match, going off what the owners said, besides being grey. So I became more open-minded and stopped being so picky about not wanting greys. There's actually a really nice grey gelding I've got my eyes set on now, even though I didn't want greys. I am a more advanced equestrian, maybe not, particularly in the riding aspect but I've been around horses most of my life, I've had jobs as a stablehand at different barns and ranches. I definitely want to accent what you said in the beginning. If you aren't experienced around horses DON'T GET YOUNG HORSES.

I've been doing western horsemanship for 9 years and I've been riding for 9. I've been showing for 5 years and I've been pretty successful. But, I want to start reining and competing in it as well.
So, my mom contacted a nearby trainer who is willing to help us buy a horse and we can board at their barn. I'd get one lesson free with the trainer per week, and they would train the horse throughout the week too.
The trainer said we shouldn't spend under $10k. I'm worried that I won't be able to find what I'm wanting in our price range (10k-12k).
    Here's what I'm looking for:
    Finished reiner
    Gelding
    7yo-10yo
    Not super picky on color
HAS to have good confirmation and movement
Responsive to my cues (leg, seat, hand, voice)
    Calm, collected, doesn't spook much.
    Loads and hauls well.
We would obviously do a vet check and make sure there aren't any underlying health issues that the seller didn't tell us about.
But yeah, I'm looking for something very specific, so fingers crossed we find something!

  • @haleyvoll9554

Hi, Hannah! so i recently bought a horse named Wren, she is 6 years old and is still a bit green. I, am just starting my 3rd year of riding in the spring. but the thing is, that my coach (Megan, the owner of the barn where i ride) was willing to train her. And the owner of Wren (Brooklyn) who was selling her is really good friends with my best friend (Ellie) whos horse is at Brooklyns barn. and they have personal connections, so Brooklyn would never suggest selling Wren to me the first place if she knew Wren wasn't a good fit for me. also over a couple months i have been helping Ellie by cleaning the stalls where she rides her horse willow, which is the place where Wren is. so I got to see Wren a bunch of times before she was even for sale. Brooklyn saw that me and wren had a connection, because usually when people got near her she would pin her ears back and grind her teeth. But she wouldnt do that with me whenever i went up to her. so, when Brooklyn put Wren for sale, I was really interested. what i'm trying to get at is, was it a mistake to buy Wren? even tho we had a connection, and she was getting trained by professionals before i would ride her? and Brooklyn was also friends with us so she would never sell a lame or drugged horse to me. Brooklyn also did some liberty with Wren before she sold her so she wasn't totally green. i just dont want to feel like i made a mistake everytime i go out to see my horse. -Haley

#1 is me half but hear me out! I have alot of experience and have been riding for 10+ years, i also have had taken care and lead multiple young horses and even was the first person to ride multiple 3/4 year olds. Also taught some everything from the start etc. So i think this is the right choice for me PERSONALLY, my trainer of six years also agreed we’re a great match and I really am in love with my babygirl. So keep in mind #1 is not meant to everyone, it’s for the green horse green rider people and that is indeed a wrong thing! :)

  • @Faeyeful
    @Faeyeful Před 4 lety

Being very tall myself with a even taller husband (195cm / 6ft. 4in.) we kinda need to look for a certain height. I don't feel comfortable on horses below 165cm, at around 170cm i start to look "to scale" and feel seated well on the back. Same with the age. Being 33 and 40 our first horse will probably be our only horse in our life, so we are trying to find a nice horse around 5-10 to life fitting to our horse life with us. :) Maybe there will ever be a 2nd but very likely no 3rd (except maybe a driving horse). So I am a little bit more picky when it comes to what I am looking for, but also willing to travel a lot further (12h drive is okay) and wait (looking for 12 months now cause most just didn't feel right or click). Now I found the nearly perfect one (well a mare, not a gelding I was hoping for) but Covid ruined the buy. :(

awesome video! I used to take care of a rather large horse for three years when I was around 11 years old. It was, by far, the nicest horse I have ever had the pleasure to meet. He did not do anything outside of what he was supposed to do and was very lowkey with the other horses where I had him for a while. Now, he is dead, which is really sad. I want to get a new horse now that I am older, and would like to know where it is safest to buy one? I live in a farm, so space is not really a problem. Is it okay to make a space for them that is not too fancy? The horse i used to take care of for someone else did not have the best place, but it worked out for us and he seemed to not mind

So I am not exactly in the market for a horse right now, but I have found a quite young Fresian/Appaloosa mix that has really caught my family’s eye. We would be doing EXTENSIVE background checking and research before making any decisions, but this particular green horse has tons of trail miles on him already, and apparently does very well alone on trails, which is unusual for someone who is only 5 years old. I could totally provide a link to this guy’s Ad if anyone would like to throw in their sense about it as well! I am definitely not a green rider, but at the same time, I definitely can’t handle any kind of horse. I’ve been riding for around 5-6 years consistently, and am very confident in my ability. Any advice for the situation? Another important thing to note is that this horse is also out of state, so I would be likely having my trainer check him out virtually if we decide on anything

I know it's not the most practical thing to look for a horse of a certain color. In my case I'm looking at paint horse geldings. I know that my options would be more open if I kept it at paint horses rather than a specific color of paint (ex) buckskin paint). There are a lot of paints and other western breeds in my town, so that shouldn't be difficult at all. I think paints are 40% of the horse population in my area. I'll probably look into other horses, especially if they have exceptional training/temperament.. I'd be very happy with basically any horse, but It's gotta be a paint (as an artist who literally paints horses all day) it would make the most sense if my horse looks like it has paint splatters on him. I know my reasonings might not make sense to you, lol.

My first horse was 1 when I got him. We just broke him a few months ago and I was the second to ride him (his 4th ride) and i can tell you he was not a calm horse to break he flipped his first two rides. So I don’t agree with green plus green makes black and blue. I’ve been riding a few years but I’m still obviously not as good as other people.

Hey! I'm late, but I need some advice. I have a 16.3 hh TB, never raced, only track trained, he is a 14-year-old gelding, and he is very healthy! He competes in novice and jumps, but he gets a bit lazy sometimes, but that's just his nature. I was planning on retiring at around age 20-24, and eventing through Preliminary maybe even advanced level. Do you think that would work?

It depends on the horse. Some 5 year olds have a lot of experience when some 5 year olds haven’t been started yet. It all depends on the horse and situation(:

Usually, beginners opt for the cheapest horses, they might be pretty, they might just... not want to spend a lot of money.
I regret deeply buying my horse now, voodoo.
He was a rescue, i bought him because i loved Arabians at the time.
pardon my language, but he's turned out to be a complete shit.
As a beginner, i wasn't ready to mentally handle that. And that's what so many beginners do not seem to understand.

  • @seekingtheFathersway

the only reason i'd d turn down an old horse is because I wouldn't want to buy a 15 year old and then only have five or so years before it's dead.
