This is actually a tribute to Jonghyun on how he contributed greatly to the beginning of Taemin's identity as an artist. "Base to the Ace" is screaming it loudly.
Remember that on their debut, Taemin didn't really have any part in Replay because he could not sing well yet that time and it was Jonghyun, together with Onew, but mostly Jonghyun who taught him how to sing. That's why as he developed his singing voice you can hear Jonghyun's footprint in his voice. :)
A korean music critic even said back in 2020 that the "Base to the Ace" part is a pledge of Taemin to his brotherhood with Jonghyun and that it's a song that will just capture you from the start to the end. :)))
it really felt like that when i heard the song for the first time. it’s like, jonghyun as the base teaching him to be the ace. he knew that taemin could be THE ACE of kpop, and now that he is the “ace”, coming back to his base is a humble thank you for our angel. i think that this song would be released even if jjong still was between us, probably if he went to military service lol, because taeminnie is really that soft on the inside, it’s really clear when he went in superm, acting like a mom lol. they all are. that’s why i love them.
Taemin literally never disappoints. This song was a genius idea for Want's outro and it's been one of my favorites ever since but I never expected him to make it into a full song. Identity is honestly such a masterpiece. The lyrics and the way it's made is genius. Only a few artists hold this unique creativity about each and every one of their songs which makes them special. Taemin is definitely one of them. He's my favorite male solo artist period, not in just kpop. Identity is one of those songs you can vibe to and go to sleep to. I rarely find duality like this in songs. I am proud and happy to say Lee Taemin is my ultimate bias in kpop.
I'm commenting because seems like you really understand about the song. I actually not a smartwols so, I cant really define the meaning of a song which has so much hidden meaning (the way I think Identity is). Taemin always emphasize whether on interview and concert that he wants to show his Identity. I got it. But for identity itself I expected it's about his inner conflict he's been dealing with throughout his career and how it shapes his identity right now that he tell to us through song explicitly. Explicitly. But imo there's too much (I presumably) think are hidden meanings on the song. The "Ace to Base" part itself makes me even confuse. Because as I said, I expected it's just all about him, but as we all heard "Base" ofc Jonghyun comes to our mind, and makes me think... hmmm why ? (In a way, I expected it supposed to be self centered song, but why the word "Base" comes out spesificly "why only him?". (It's a complicacted question I hope you understand my confusion, and I want to ask your opinion about what the song means. your opinion is very much appreciated)
@@kiminoseidei I’ve seen the lyrics once or twice and from what I’ve seen, Identity is about him crawling from the bottom (base) to the top (ace) That’s why I think “base to ace” was included but I still think it may have been a Jonghyun reference as well. I also think it is about the entertainment industry making him this “ace”, but in reality, it isn’t sunshine and rainbows. He wants to show that he isn’t perfect and that he has something he wants to get out or express. That’s why I think the lines “Burn me hotter” and “Beyond the glare of the light, Still the same, Put it back in me” were there. Kind of like him telling SM, The Entertainment Industry, and maybe us as fans to put a certain part of him back that’s missing now that was taken away. (Maybe Jonghyun? Jonghyun is sadly gone and even though he knows it’s impossible, maybe the meaning is to bring him back.) The lines “The emotions that are still left, Slowly making eye contact with me” could also add to this theory because he has so many emotions balled up. One of his closest friends/brother-figures died, I know there was some type of thing between him and Naeun of Apink (not drama but a lot of people think he truly loved her), and he’s been working non-stop lately with himself and SuperM. Overall, I think the song is a mix of him going from the bottom to the top, his feelings of loss and love, and also him being able to find some way to cope with these emotions internally. I figured this with the lines “Oh, finally a relaxing breath” and “Everything is after dawn again”. Basically, Identity is a way to define himself and to share his story at the same time. It’s honestly quite magnificent.

That's really an enlightenment for me when you explain about raising on "Bace to Ace". I couldn't relate to that because i dont even undersgand the lyrics before that part. Really interesting!

actually, taemin wrote this song with the reference of his past experiences, not trying to be rude since i’m also a fan of shinee but jonghyun isn’t included with this one at all.
this song was meant for him being a trainee on sm’s “base” and debuted with the title of being “ace” because of his hard work.
Yes. The 4 released their first albums with similar names ACE (Taemin), Base (Jonghyun), Face (Key) and Voice (Onew) in order of release date. Minho has a couple of singles out but I cannot find a first album.

This song is hauntingly beautiful. It’s the perfect track to end Act 2 as Taemin discovers his identity. Whenever I listen to this, I imagine Taemin undergoing the process of rebirth as he leaves all the scars and his pain behind while Jonghyun watches him proudly from afar (Base to Ace reference). (His newly-found identity then became ‘Advice Taemin’ later on, the one who doesn’t give a fxck about his image as an idol anymore.) That prolonged instrumental section, the lyrics, symbolisms and metaphor he used, damn, it feels heavenly, otherwordly. Taemin is such a genius artist. Thank you for your hard work Taeminnie! ❤️
Yes and now that we got through guilty era and he’s leaving sm to pursue his own self this is a huge deal, I definitely see identity as the end of an era and guilty as the end of an era as well-I love that about advice he truly doesn’t give a fuck and guilty he will expose everyone who ever hurt him. Am I the only one that got super emotional after listening to this song? Like I'm really not the type to cry over a song especially a kpop song but something about this song really strikes my emotions for some reason

My 1st time, when I heard and saw him was with _"Goodbye" ("Sayonara Hitori")_ and _"Flame of Love"_ , I was deeply depressive in that days, but still he made me cry and fall in love with him & his incredible talent, art, creativity.
Lyrics, melody of his songs also explain perfectly my own feelings and experiences I got through life.

@@Krismonidavi I played both songs at the same time and they harmonized so well, I'm pretty sure they're recorded in the same key and with a similar tempo, it's like Taemin wanted to record an extention of Jonghyun's song.. if I have time I'll try to make a mash up of them

But now Taemin has found his own identity and advice is him carving his own path and not caring what others say and guilty is him exposing anyone who ever hurt him and now he is leaving sm and going To take a new path. Identity was the end of an era and acknowledgement of how far he came and who helped him on the way. We don’t have to associate Taemin’s songs with Jjong Anymorr because his new songs aren’t about that. NGDA was him working though his grief and healing and identity was about how he found his artistic identity and Jonghyun helped him and an acknowledgment of that and that’s beautiful.

My favourite among this album
I’ve been on a Taemin kick (again!) with the recent news of him leaving SM now is a good time to reflect on his career.
Anyway I’ve seen debate about this the song is 100% about Jonghyun helping him find his identity he wouldn’t have put base to ace otherwise
No one is talking about the “eyes that used to shine past tense, gloomy scenes filling his mind (depression or he’s been through something hard, it also ties into the dark imagery on black rose) he literally says “I’m not over you”. Also after the base to ace line he says SHINY EYES like obviously he is referencing his group because it’s part of his identity.
Identity is like him growing into his true self and identity and acknowledging everyone who has helped him reach that point and letting go of the past. The entire NGDA is about coping with grief and moving forward (yes I will talk about this when I make the video essay) and Advice is the start of his new identity. Advice is him breaking it down and not caring about his image, taking things into his own hands, and Guilty is the exposè, no wonder SM didn’t promote it. I’m so glad he’s going to leave.

So i'm a fan of taemin but not shinee so can anyone explain why you're talking about jonghyun in the comments, how is he connected to this song??
So, "Base" is the title of Jonghyun's first mini-album and "Ace" is the title of Taemin's. Other commenters have suggested that "base to ace" may simultaneously refer to both Taemin's pain over losing Jonghyun to suicide in 2017 and Taemin's own struggle to rise to the top in the entertainment industry. Also Jonghyun is such a mentor to Taemin. They shared the same passion, I always love their musicality. I believe their bond is much deeper than everyone would think. Jonghyun's very supportive to Taemin, he even delayed his own concert in order to attend Taemin's very first concert in Japan. He wrote songs for Taemin too. He's always vocal in supporting him, often on social medias. He declared himself as a president of Taemin's fanclub and as his mom lol they are indeed adorable. They often shared their thought during their talks. They were also roommates too so imagine how much they talked to each other. Jonghyun plays a big role in Taemin's life, just like Taemin inspires Jonghyun too :)

He probably won’t say wether it is, as he is kind of cryptic on song meaning and he has made songs before I think are about him but he never said anything. So we won’t know.
