What is a product owner in the context of an Agile organization?

The cocreators of Scrum placed a lot of emphasis on the #productowner role because in their minds, this individual would largely act as the CEO of the product and in terms of accountability, the buck would stop with them.
So, if you're thinking of picking someone from the team and making them a product owner just to fill the accountability, it's worth rethinking that strategy.
