Real leather will feel soft and flexible, but it will also have a grainy feel. You also won't be able to stretch faux leather, but real leather can be stretched. Lastly, real leather will feel warm, while fake leather feels cool. Leather has a distinct, oaky smell, while faux leather does not.
    How can you identify leather?
Image result for leather real vs fake
To identify genuine leather, look for a tag labeling the product as real leather, genuine leather, top or full grain leather, or made with animal products. Run your fingers across the surface grain to feel for tiny imperfections, which usually indicate real leather. If you're still not sure, smell the material.
    Which leather is real?
Image result for leather real vs fake
Real leathers are generally categorized in three leather grades: Full-grain, top-grain, and split grain leather. Full-grain leather offers the highest quality and costs the most whereas split grade leather offers the least quality and costs the least. Click here to find out more about leather grades.
Does real leather have a smell?
Real leather: If you've smelled real leather before, you know it has a distinctive “leathery” smell - it has a natural, organic, skin scent that cannot be accurately manufactured. How to spot fake leather: There is no reliable way to fake the smell of real leather. Faux leather smells like plastic.
Is it worth buying real leather?
The answer is, real leather can last decades if treated well. Faux leather, on the other hand, has about a third of the lifespan of authentic leather. It also won't develop lustre or become more soft and comfortable like real leather. But, instead, faux leather looks more worn out as it ages - like most fabrics.
    Does real leather crack?
    Image result
Authentic leather is made of animal hide, which naturally needs to be maintained and moisturized to keep it elastic and durable. Even so, leather of a poor quality tends to easily become dry, crack, and unfortunately peel.
Why is Italian leather so good?
    Image result
The premium leather that Italy is renowned for is the full-grain, vegetable-tanned kind. Removed from the outermost layer of the animal's skin - the most durable part of the hide - full-grain leather has an unaltered grain structure and is subsequently extremely robust.
    Is real leather expensive?
    Genuine Leather Is Expensive
The material used, however, is the simplest way to distinguish genuine leather. Genuine top-grain cowhide or sheep leather is costly since the process of finding the right animal hide and converting it into wearable leather is time-consuming.

I have a faux jacket that looks exactly like the "real" one here, i actually take very good care of my clothes, so literally the only downside of all my faux jackets is that the collar will peel sooner or later, even the ones that haven't been worn much started peeling, which is too bad because the rest of the jacket is in perfect conditions lol

Does this take into account Pull Up/Crazy Horse leather? To my understanding it also lightens when pinched or stretched because of the oils and waxes. I own a 100% confirmed full grain crazy horse cowhide and it lightens when pinched and stretched.

I wouldn’t do the fire test by my $500.00 leather jacket (even if it’s $150.00), or even my $79.99 fake leather jacket, either. I, however, might try it on a thoroughly worn out leather jacket, or a fake leather one. Just subbed!! Your friend, Jeff.

In Mexico we went to a leather shop and the owner actually did the burn test on one of the jackets we were looking at to show us it was genuine leather. He actually put it on and then put a lighter up against one of the sleeves. He said that if it's real leather, a genuine leather shop won't have any problem with you doing the test. But if they do have a problem with it, then don't pay the price of real leather because it's no such thing. We bought the jacket.

    NOPE. NOPE. NOPE. NOPE.
The first test was bullcrap, the “scales” or pattern depends on what leather you are using and what cut of that leather you are using, as well as what side you are using.
The fire test is bull too for the most part, leather is fireproof to an extent but I wouldn’t recommend you take an open flame to top grain leather as it may affect the feel or fibrous textures.
Some things are true like the water absorption but that doesn’t always mean real or fake leather.

It’s really hard to tell sometimes. Some faux jackets do a really good job looking like the real, and some real can have faux characteristics if pigmented or smoothed out with protective coatings.

Then honor the animals by only buying second hand leather jackets. Your not supporting the industry, and your making use out of the material, otherwise it would likely just lay around somewhere, functionless and deteriorating. In Some cultures, things like leather or fabrics made from plants have a level of spiritual significance.
A good coat deserves a good home, no matter the material. But you can have a good coat without supporting any of those industries, just buy from thrift and pawn shops.

Other than certain furs, no animals are slaughtered for leather, it is a biproduct of the meat industry.
A cow sells for around £1,200 at market. The raw leather is worth around £30

No it doesn’t. They don’t kill or hurt animals for leather. It’s just a byproduct of the food industry. Stop buying faux leather. It causes more harm to the environment, because they use synthetic materials.
