  • Happy Thanksgiving!
I'm taking advantage of the holidays to edit and post some old footage. Here's a hack I performed on the cheapest mag drill I could find to make it serve my purposes. Can you guess what project I was working on?
Link to the mag drill I purchased:

by doing this have you made the annular cutters not able to be used now, they would sit so high that you would have ot build in a stand now to get them to go all the way to the bottom. or get really long angular cutters...

I wouldn't use a drill chuck to hold anular cutters, there is too much torque on the cutter. We always used the anular cutter direct in the arbour and held in with the grub screws. And you could always get stub length drill bits to go directly into chuck. Also is less of the dovetail now engaged so it's now less rigid.

Thanks for providing some experienced insight. Good points on both counts. I may invest in the proper cutters and stubby drills in the future.

How could you not know about standard annular cutters before you buy a machine specifically designed to use them? More expensive models from Vevor and others, allow the motor to move up and down in the dovetail slide. The lowest end models don’t.

The depth of my ignorance surpasses all understanding.

@@RickRose no. Unfortunately a lot of people do this. They see something they think they can use. It gets them somewhat excited and they don’t look beyond that. I don’t understand it.

Problem with raising the motor on the dovetail is you've increased the moment arm distance, which basically means its a longer lever fighting against the magnet. The magnet may be strong enough to to take it, but I'd be curious to know if you've had issues with the drill coming up on you after this mod?

No issues but I've only used it in a horizontal, tabletop scenario.

Throw the standard chuck in the garden. A mag drill's intended use is anular cutters not standard twist drills. You are over complicating the use and principle. Cut the drill down

I hear what you're saying. I made it work for my intended purpose, but I don't doubt there was a more proper way to go about it. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

Just get a 2" Annular Cutter Extension Arbor That will fix your problem without having to make changes to height adjustment.

You just made your drill Top Heavy, your going to regret that, shorten the drill bit be easier! Your stuffed if you want to use Annular Cutters.

Yes that's right. I'll have to reverse the whole process. I've been told newer models are made to easily switch back and forth.
