- HongisBored so he spent a day at Balestier Plaza with Jiejie. We found a barbershop that looked straight out from the 80s, and had some kaya toast that made us tear.

Always great to know a bit of history of the area from the Malls. The sparkle in the eye of William the Barber shop owner. When he talked about the ear;y days of mall. Can see that he really treats the mall as part of him.

It’s good to hear that you are mixing Hokkien in your videos. A bit sad that dialect is dying off in our society especially for the next generation. I enjoy listening when people are communicating in my dialect, Teochew. 😅
I actually hope to learn Teochew, since that’s my dialect. But have to more effort coz not commonly spoken
@@HongisBored It will be quite easy if you able to speak a little bit of Hokkien as some of the words are quite similar. Can start from listening to Teochew songs like “Di Gor Liang, Di Gor Zhou…” 😄👍

There was a Bonsai nursery in one of the small roads along Balestier. My mothet deposited two bonsais with them for maintenance. My mum didn't go to collect for some months and suddenly that nursery disappeared and swallowed my mums bonsais
So sad! Anyway I didn’t know there was this maintenance service for bonsai. That’s rather fascinating.

I visit balestier when I am at novena. It just a walk away, frankly I never visit balestier plaza but the shaw plaza beside it. Shaw plaza is new and cozy. They have a King Grouper Fish soup there that is so yummy. If you notice, there is not much hdb flats around balestier, only shophouses, boutique condos around. Smile

My visits to this plaza was 35 years ago when I was very sick and people recommended Dr Lee Suan Yew (LKY's youngest brother) who runs a clinic there. Thank goodness for the fate in looking for him, otherwise I might not even live till now and watched this video. Hohoho! Anyway, the kaya toast looks yummy indeed and it's so affordable .. btw, I also don't fancy Ya Kun. I like the conversation with the William the barber and kinda empathsise with him. Lastly, I had a good laugh at your "silliness" regarding the words on the entrance/exit doors.

Balestier also have 2 very old school bread bakeries - Sing Hon Loong & Sweetlands, esp. the first one. Also mny Tau Sar Piah stalls esp. Loong Fatt. Also vry old Lam Yeo Coffee Powder factory sells asst. types of coffee.

Yes agreed kaya toast is nice, prawn mee is nice too. As balestier oso have those ya kun, kiliney, toast box. But this is not only cheaper but nicer. Prawn mee is oso nicer than the whampoa, but prepare to wait 30mins~1h during peak. Food portions is big, can be share.

I just shared this with my daughter, asking her to give the place a try and guess what? she replied with a photo of people Q-ing for food at the Prawnogrpahy place. She happens to be there waiting for her husband having his hair cut at one of the salon. What a coincidence. Guess that place is frequent by people staying in the area.
