***ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
When I saw that my water softener is full of water I knew that wasn't normal. This is my forth year using a water softener and I had never seen water sitting above the salt before.
I'll walk you through some simple water softener troubleshooting that I did and eventually we do find what caused the brine from not draining from the water softener. It could have been any one of the troubleshooting problems I show you but in the end it was the venturi valve gasket that needed replacing.
So if you are asking yourself...how much water should be in my water softener brine tank? I think this video will help you.

Excellent video! Nothing you suggested worked, then I found out about what’s called “salt mush” that had clogged the bottom of my unit. Pain in the a** but emptied all the water and salt, cleaned the storage tank with warm water, put in fresh salt, recharged, and solved everything. Your video helped with the diagnostics and assembly. Thank you!
Derick that's what im going through tonight im.going to finish it off in the morning
After adding the warm water did you just add the salt and statt the recharge cycle?
I have the exact same water sofener.I knew I was having the same problem as yours, but still I hadn't checked the salt level in about 4 weeks. The water line was at 5 and the salt was at 2. Decided to order order a new venturi unit and float system since my w/s is about 17 years old but then I found your vid and decided to follow your lead and disassembled the old systems, cleaned them and reassembled everything. Drained the water, added salt and ran a recharge cycle and it worked! Well I've got extra parts coming that I'm sure will come in handy later. Liked and subscribed.
Great to hear! Is your water softener still working good?
My softener looks a lot like yours, and had almost 2 feet of water above the salt. I just siphoned the water out into the drain and will now start checking the things you recommended. Thanks.
So recently the shallow well pump housing was cracked and sucking air big time for awhile. I eventually spotted it and by that time the water softener tank was nearly completely full of water up to the 7 mark! like holy hell! So I scooped it all out replaced the well pump. Going to try cleaning the screens, check for plugged hoses, float ect. This is all after a deep freeze also. Ice destroyed everything! Thanks for the video!
I am probably about to ask a really stupid question. Just to be clear I did look through my manual and did not see😂 Also on Google all I can find is putting salt in the tank. When we purchased our home it came with this exact water softener which does not drain properly. I did notice there was salt in the well AND tank. Is there suppose to be any salt in the well or only the tank? Thank you for the clarification.
Just wanted to say thank you so much for the helpful videos. I cleaned the Venturi and did everything I felt like I could to maintenance this thing before I did a recharge. After the recharge our water went from 15 down to 7 hardness which was a big improvement. Also the softener cleanser did an excellent job! Now all I need to do is to get this thing to drain properly and we will be golden🙂
Thank you, this explains what is happening to my softener completely. There is water in the bottom of my softener and causing a salt barrier, I wasn't sure how much water should be at the bottom, now I know.
What is the name of the new washer gasket? And where can we get one?
Great video. I have the same water softener system and I am not using any salt. It looks like a little bit of water in the tank too.
Thanks, great video! Excellent descriptions and detailed steps to troubleshoot.
Thanks and good luck with your water softener!
I have some problem... ordered the gasket. Wonderfull vid
Another GREAT tutorial, Roland! Very informative. Glad you got it fixed up, My Friend! God Bless! Much Love!
I'm so happy it worked and we are back to normal. Another job behind me :-D
great video roland.. tons of ppl like us.. inherited the softner and have no idea what it does lol.. this.. will help.👌✔
We inherited this one as well with the house just over 3 years ago. Only 2 minor issues in that time, one was a salt bridge developed.
Yessir 😆
Thanks for the video.
I have the same softener and problem.
Where did you get your parts?
where did he get the gasket?
Until I got my new gasket, I took the black gasket and used a hair dryer set on warm, not hot and it was useable.
How high does the water level have to be I got the same water softener as ur I clean mine out this morning thank you
Water should lower than your Salt. You should not see your water above your salt. Make sure your float and valve are not sticking in the fill position. Ceramic piece if you have one is above the Rubber stopper so the Stirofoam is floating freely on the fiberglass rod.
@paullarue4896 thank you
Great video thank you do you have a link for that washer
Show me! How did you get the float/tube out? How did you get it back in? How did you get that gasket out? How did you get the cover off to get to the gasket?
You have to remove the venturi first it will give you a couple inches to move the float/tube
@@stephanemeuyou9901 i wish you would show the steps you followed to remove the old gasket. Also, where to get new gasket?
how did you get the float out of the tube
When you pull that black tube out, how do you get it back in without having a pile of salt rocks inside of it?
I've done everything you did, and you're right. It doesn't look worn but, that's what I'm gonna try next. Luckily I live close to a plumbing shop so maybe I wont have to wait for ordering one. I'm also having a problem with the rubber seal on the bottom of the float. It keeps falling off.
Hoping it works for you!
Thank you for this video!!!
You're welcome 😊
Great tutorial! Was your water softener flashing an error code before you repaired it? I have what looks like the same model and im getting ERR01 on my display.
when you make the video my sugestion is, when you show what i need to do to check the lines ect. please show us what you are talking about. when you showed us a few things you said I already did that & it looks good, nut we don't know how you did it.
How did you get the tube with the numbers back in with the salt still in the tank? If you do have to take all the salt out how do you get it all out because the casing of the water softener is so deep to get to the bottom?
I changed the gasket following the instructions on this video and recharged the system but still have water in the brine tank even more water in it.
I also checked the floating valve to see if there is anything wrong but didn't see any error.
What should I do next to fix this issue ? Any suggestions would be very much appreciate it.
Also can there be salt in the bottom of the tube with numbers on it?
As these videos are watched for educational purposes, we miss the steps you already did or are unable to show. But thanks for your efforts.
Best tutorial I have seen
Thanks
A bit confused. Watched manufacurer video on mantanence, they said add salt until you see no water. So how much water is normal?
In mine only aninch or two of water
at 2:40 regarding "ByPass" direction , I think "Push in for ByPass", "Pull out for Service(softwater)." The video shows opposite, but it seems the direction he said correct to me. Please confirm if all model/ brand are the same "ByPass" direction. Thanks.
Great video. Thank you!!
You're welcome 😊
Great Job!! Thank you, Sir
You are welcome!
Good job Rolly!
Thanks again!
Really interesting, I have no idea what this thing is for, is it some type of filtration for the house water supply? 👍❤
thanks, we add salt into the tank and it creates a brine along with the water to soften the hard water that comes into the house from the ground. There is too many minerals in the well water. Its hard on the pipes, clothing, your skin etc.
@@GettingItDoneRepairs The brine water is used to clean the softener resin and stone. The stone and resin are what remove the minerals and what not from your water to reduce hardness. The stone and resin are essentially a water filter.
My problem : motor gear was broken and not shifting between modes to empty the reservoir. Motor needed replacement
Also do not tie the recharge output hose to the overflow hose because they both go to a drain. The recharge hose pumps water and if its tied to the overflow hose in a T to the discard tube it will just pump water backward into the unit and cause it to over flow. The overflow can just dribble into a bucket. The recharge hose has to drain into a sewer drain.
Yeah, I have this problem. I use a T junction.
Hello. That hello me alot. Thanks!
I'm curious if you can advise me. I had the same problem and tried all the steps and turns out I replaced the whole venturi part. Thankfully, the water is drained from the tank, however, the water is not "wet salt" and is completely dry so I'm not sure if the water is filling up. Also, the water in the house is still hard, which hints me something is wrong but I am not sure what exactly. Any idea?
Thanks. Very helpful
I let the salt level go to 0 in my ge water softener, then the tank filled with water. I refilled the unit with salt pellets and the ge water softener still fills up with water like up to the 7 level.
I still have no clue where you sent my gnome I even rewatched your video twice ? 🧙♂️
I sent it to Chris Dixon White North Forge. I looked last night as well, I guess he hasn't make a video yet.
@@GettingItDoneRepairs Thanks I will have to go get him I don’t believe I have his channel yet.
@@frederickschwartz1873 I know he was doing some schooling. Likely busy.

Thx!
I need to order that gasket for mine, could you please tell me where you ordered it from, and the name and number for it. Thank you

Great video and helpful, thanks so much!!

@@GettingItDoneRepairs where can we get that gasket?
Where can I find that gasket?
My water softener, same model, lost all it resin. Not sure why. Cleaning up my lines today.
That happened to me with my last unit. Resin clogged every faucet in our house.
I had hardly no water pressure in my house so I bypassed my sears water softener and now I have good water pressure again. What could be the cause of this? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
Not sure, but it sounds like you have a blockage somewhere. I would check the venturi and the hose that goes from the venturi to the salt tank.
I have the same issue. Low water pressure with the softner on. Pushing the bypass, I have better water flow. Salt level has not gone down and I have hard water stains in my shower and dishwasher. Were you able to find a solution? I hope it worked out. PLEASE let me know. Thank-you
Do you know the item number of the gasket?
I have a whirlpool whes40 and I have trouble shooter everything I can but can’t figure out why it’s spraying out water during only regen where the drain line plastic meets the machine not the actual drain tube ?? Please help
Interesting video.
Thanks Teddy!
It would be nice if I could find a video on my system. I have a brine tank with a osmosis unit. Water is full in brine. I've done everything to try to figure it out.
I have the Whirpool WHES30 that looks just like this one you serviced. In normal use the brine tank has no visible water even when the salt is at 1 to 2 level. Does it fill with water to make brine only when a regeneration cycle starts?
good question! I also would like to know.
My understanding from the 2 years my unit was functioning is there should be no water visible in the tank when it is idle.
What do you do with the wet salt? Mine is like slush
I scooped it out and through it away.
you should show how you removed the float
It just pulls right out of the tube.
How to get the clip back in???
I have the same unit and it's holding water. The tube you mention at 2:12 is clogged on my unit. I cannot blow air through it. Even when disconnected at the other end. How can I clear it? Thanks!
not sure maybe let it soak in hot water for a while?
I cannot remove the float from the salt level tube as the black hose from the siphon isnt long enough, how did you get around that issue?
You will have to disconnect it at the venturi
Or just run it completely out of salt then you can take that black big tube out real easy
I’ve got a charger water systems softener. Where is the Venturi valve on mine?
I don't know. This is a Whirlpool
My water softener is completely filled all the way up to 7 and the salt is only at 2 it did take about a week for me to get it fixed how do I remedy this
how did you remove the brine well? you did not show it in the video!
I didn't remove the brine well
@@GettingItDoneRepairs The thing you call "the tube" is, according to the manual for my GE water softener, the brinewell. How did you get "the tube" out?
Why so much mold around?
I have a new whirlpool water softener motor For recharging keep running all the time
Where do you but that gasket?
Online plumbing parts stores
After you put the venture back you didn't tell how to remove waters out of tank.
Hey big fan, i was following your video and i was having trouble with the water tube [black tube] min 4:47 i think its called the flot tube . i checked both ends they were clean but the air wasn't going thourgh.
You must have some salt build up inside the hose somewhere
Mine was full of thick salt, stopped using. I emptied it all, put just a bit to the 1 and it's been there for weeks. I did the dissemble from one of your vids, cleaned it all, still not using salt. Any suggestions besides a new water softener?
Without seeing it I can't really say
How do you pull the black float tube out of tank without all the salt collapsing over hole at bottom? Is the black tube inside another tube?
I removed most of the salt from the tank.
You have to remove the black hose from the venturi assembly, then pull the black hose into the brine tank to get the float assembly out of the black cylinder tube.
Would have been great if you videoed while doing it , not after you did it , so we can see exactly what was done
Very good video. Thank you
Thank you
Tried all that you mentioned, and still have water in the tank. Ugh….
bro is that black mold spots all over your bypass valve hahah?! : ()
Good video but you didn't show us how bad the old gasket looks like!
Actually you can hardly tell.
During the brine draw my unit fills with water continuously until the float shuts the water off. Bought and installed new but the unit never worked from day one. The company I bought it from never returned my calls. I guess I’m out 800$
For a second i thought you were Obama
I have one of those, mine works great as a trash-can !
North of hwy7?
Yes sir!
@@GettingItDoneRepairs lol. Love it!! Thanks from the Kawarthas
The salt level was below 2 and now after you said it was fixed, the salt level was just below 3 😁
Where can I order that gasket part
I have the opposite problem, I don't have water going into my softener tank
must be plugged up somewhere
Part number?
Venturi Rubber Gasket Seal #70
World Valve Part #7204362
My softner (Whirlpool) water was almost to the top and brine well had lots of salt in the bottom. I replaced the flat gasket, pumped all the water out of the tank and moved all the salt below the well. Problem solved.
Looks to me like u just added salt to it. Went from level 2 to level 3...
"I already did that"
Yeah, show us next time. Not helpful
My water level is like 2’ above salt level 🤣😄😁
Need to show ALL the steps...not just point at something and say "do this"!
It's self explanatory
@@GettingItDoneRepairs agree
Skill issue
This is This and This is That and "I Already Did It" Almost EVERYTHING YOU DID WAS OFF CAMERA !!! So You Didn't Show Much At All !!!
@@researchtruth9896 maybe you need to watch a couple more times, so you catch on. Maybe watch it in slow mo
The issue I have with your video is that very often you point at something and keep saying "I already did this", so if you already did it before the video was even filmed, what are we supposed to learn from you? I would have like to have seen what you did rather than hearing you already did it.
Those are things you can check along the way.
This is what you do, I already did it, so I won't show you 👎
Guess it depends on water softener. Mine maintains water level just above salt. If you do not have water in your salt how is it making the brine to clean the filter tank. Something very fishy here.....
I believe it fills up during the recharge in order to make the brine, then drains when idle.
Those cheap big box water softeners are a waste of money .If you are on budget ,go ahead and buy one .
did all that and nada
