  • A quick look at a type of nock you may not be familliar with, they are a `tanged` nock sometimes called an insert nock, which goes into the shaft rather than over the top of a cone on the shaft. These ones are made from bone and horn, we have a few left over, a mixed bunch, we are selling them off in our SALE page below, one bargain lot only, once thay are gone they are gone!

These nocks do look ideal for bamboo arrows.

You could easily make a guide/jig for the tangs, it would have to be shaft size specific though.

    Never seen these before.
Is there a historic relevance? I quite like doing the self nocks with the horn insert (on the rare instance I build wooden arrows) using fake horn, cause that is what I have. Are these better?

Horn/bone has been used for years as nocks, particularly in the Victorian era for target arrows.

Is there a benefit to this sort of nock?

Yes. They look nice, they are stronger than plastic, less plastic is good, more period authentic for those wanting to do that etc.

eww plastic nocks.. EWWW. I am never gonna put plastic nocks on arrows i make. I need to try some horn nocks

There are many advantages to plastic nocks, speed of application for one.

Richard Head Longbows i feel like they can totally ruin a potentially traditional looking arrow. what are other benefits would you say?

Plastic nocks made the sport more accesable to those on a budget, a small outlay for a taper tool and a couple of pounds for a bag of nocks people cna make their own arrows or just maintain th eones they have, without them people would either have to buy pre-made arrows or be using horn that is much harder to use and apply.
