Just a few years after this song was recorded, my wife’s father died unexpectedly. They were extremely close. He was only 44. She was only 24. After we went to the funeral, we were sitting in the car and I turned on the radio. This song began playing immediately. My wife broke down again, telling me that this was her father’s way of saying goodby and that it was OK to move on. I’ll never forget that moment and this version will always be my favorite.

She’s the writer...great song! She gets all the royalties when people cover it. Whitney Houston covered it. Dolly heard Whitney’s cover while driving & had to pull over. She said it was so beautiful, she started to cry. The guy that just sat down next to Dolly, is Porter Wagner. Dolly was a regular on his show. When she decided to leave this show and go on her own. Mr. Wagner was not pleased. So she wrote this song for him.s As a way of saying goodbye.

Dolly Parton was on the Stephen Colbert show not to long ago. She mentioned she wrote songs for other people. He asked her, if any of her songs were covered by another artist and became bigger. She said that was a very good question. The perfect example was her song “I will always love you”... she referred to it, when she sang it, as her little song. She then went on to say when Whitney Houston sang it. She said...she took my little song and made it big and beautiful.
      She felt so honored.

Who is that? You ask. That is Porter Wagoner. He had a TV show that was on every week for many years in the 1960s and 1970s. He "discovered" and promoted Dolly Parton on his weekly TV show. He was her mentor, promoter, and greatest fan. After 7 years she decided to leave and go off on her own. They argued about it because Porter didn't want her to leave his show. She wrote this song to let Porter know she was leaving. When he heard it at rehearsal that afternoon he cried. She sang this to him on live TV that night while he was 10 feet away. That's the video you reacted to. He said, "You sang that like you sorta mean it". She said "Well, I did sorta mean it". It was the last song she sang on the Porter Wagoner show. Years later when Porter was in the hospital dying, she sat beside him in the hospital with her guitar and sang this to him. They loved each other very much, though they were never lovers. After this aired in 1974 the song hit the top of the charts. Eight years later she sang it in the movie "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" and it hit #1 again. Twelve years later, in 1994, Whitney Houston sang it and it hit #1 on the charts for the third time. It seems that almost all blacks only know about Whitney singing this song and have no idea that a white woman, Dolly, wrote it and took it to #1 twice a generation before Whitney ever heard it.

In 1966 or 67, Dolly became a regular performer on The Porter Wagner Show. They fought like cats and dogs (Dolly's words). When her contract was up, Dolly was ready to move on. Porter wanted her to stay, even going so far as to tell her she owed it to him. She wrote this song in one night hoping it would explain how she felt and how grateful she was to him. She sat him down and sang it for him. But he was just too angry. She left the show and went out on her own. Porter actually sued her for the rights to the songs she wrote while under contract with him. And he won the suit. Her songs were legally his. Years later, Porter was sick and broke and mostly forgotten, except in Nashville. He was selling all those songs that he had won. Dolly Parton bought all her songs back from him. Dolly has a beautiful heart full of compassion and forgiveness. She felt no sense of justice or revenge. After buying the songs from him, she gifted them back to him. Even though I loved this song first by Dolly Parton, I also really liked Whitney's version. Whitney Huston's mother, Cissy Huston was one of Elvis Presley's backup singers called "The Sweet Sensations". Cissy Huston later had a stellar career as a gospel singer.

Dolly wrote this for Porter Wagoner who gave her her start in the business. She was leaving his show to go out on her own and wanted to thank him. He initially was ok with it but turned sour on it and her when his ratings slumped without her. But when he was in dire straits and needed cash, he put his entire music catalog up for sale. She bought it and then gave it back to him later as a gift. When he was on his death bed, she would sit with him and sing to him. I Will Always Love You was a number one hit in three decades in a row. 1970s when she wrote it and first recorded it. 1980s when it was on the soundtrack of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. And, then in the 1990s when Whitney Houston covered it and took it to number one. Recently, it was honored in the multi-star video, Forever Country: Artist of Then, Now, and Forever @. She once jokingly said, "Whitney can have the credit, as long as I get the check."

      Dolly's is sincerity, a message.
Whitney's choice to do it as a power-ballad is kind of a bit odd if you think about it given the lyrical content.
but I also prefer Dolly's voice in general to Whitney's. Whitney is one toned belting.

You have likely heard many Dolly Parton written songs and just don't know it. She has written songs that have been hits for both male and female singers in almost every genre. Celine was only 6 yrs old & Whitney was 11 yrs old when Dolly compose, recorded, & took this song to #1 in 1974 and topped the charts again in 1982 when she re-recorded it as part of the soundtrack for the movie "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas". Then a decade after that, Whitney did a cover & put her own spin on it, as part of the soundtrack to the movie "The Bodyguard" with Kevin Costner, which was Whitney's first film & acting debut....
Dolly did this on live TV, in front of a live audience, decades before autotune or computer aided technology existed. She is also a prolific songwriter, a smart & savvy businesswoman, and most importantly she is an incredible philanthropist. She has a program that gives out free books to children until kindergarten age to help give them a head start on literacy & education. Back at the start of this crazy pandemic, she contributed around one million dollars towards research in finding a vaccine. She literally saved the life a young child actress on a film set they were working on). I think I'm safe in saying that Dolly is one of America's national treasures. She is a living legend & beloved the world over for her music, TV shows & movies, books, & major studio films, etc.
Many folks assume Whitney wrote or recorded this first. One of my favorite pastimes lately is watching CZcamsrs react to finding out that Dolly is the originator of this beautiful love song. :-)
Please go further down this rabbit hole with the following samples of her vast library of music: Jolene (Dolly wrote this song the same day she wrote I will always love you), Coat of many colors (her most autobiographical song), Islands in the stream (her famous duet with Kenny Rogers), & 9 to 5 (she wrote it for the movie of the same name, that she was in - it's a funny movie).
I've always preferred Dolly's version over Whitney's. Maybe it's because I heard Dolly's first & grew up with it (I'm 53 now). To me, it's a sweeter, more melancholy song; as it was intended to be a goodbye to her then partner, Porter Wagoner. Whitney's version is more of a in-your-face powerhouse ballad, belted out with her incredible voice to better suit the dramatic & emotional tone of the movie...

Porter Wagoner's reaction to his show tanking after Dolly left was classic music industry bs. He tried to sue her, spent thousands of dollars for nothing. And then Dolly bought his entire catalogue and gave it back to him. That woman is an angel. For her to be so forgiving to someone who came at her like that. We need to take lessons from Dolly Parton.

Dolly wrote it. It was famously covered by the late Whitney Houston, (which made Dolly a sh*t-ton of money), and she has written more than 3,000 songs. I have met her twice, and she is just an absolute genuine doll... (And drop-dead gorgeous!)

Dolly Parton wrote this song. I didn't know Celine covered this? The cover that was all over the place in the 90's was done by Whitney Houston. Most younger people believe it was her original and some get defensive when they find out that she, in fact, covered the song and it belonged to Dolly all along XD

Whitney Houston actually remade the song in 1992 for the movie The Bodyguard.

Its was personal, she loved Cole Porter & not romantically, we all know love is real & personal but love for a spouse is different from a friend, sister, mother, brother, etc. but ALL are deep but different degrees ...He wasn't happy about her leaving and when he got older he didn't have the money to buy back his own written music or something to that effect & when Dolly got wind if this she fork out a lot of money to buy them back for him...
That tells you all you need to know about what kind of friend Dolly is & how she doesn't forget where she came from and those that helped her with her come ups...she got true grit!

She is the original singer and songwriter. Look up her songs and success. Unlike many performers..she has kept her profits from success and she is very generous. Her wealth blew me away but it means nothing compared to her as a person. She gives so much away

Hi, I enjoyed your reaction to Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” by calling Dolly the
Queen! You realized your mistake when you read the
    History of the Song written
    and published by Dolly in
    1973/1974.
I fell in love with “ I Will Always You” while Dolly was singing to Burt Reynolds in that scene from “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” Movie.
I knew Whitney Houston sang the same song in “The Bodyguard”, but I didn’t know Celine Dion also sang “I Will Always Love You”.
I will always prefer Dolly’s Version over Whitney’s Version of “I Will Always
    Love You”.
