- Join Steve and Scott on their John Muir Trail journey. For those of you planning a JMT journey of your own, hopefully this video is helpful in learning some of the terrain, possible campsites, preparation and resupply and permitting options. Most importantly, I hope you all enjoy the beauty of the Sierras as much as I did.

Thank you so much for filming this absolutely breathtaking video of your journey on the JMT. The scenery was just incredible, and your photography was brilliant, absolutely wonderful. I love water, and there are very few videos that show the amount of stunning waterfalls and rivers that yours has. Thank you so much! I've started this comment so many times because your video literally took my breath away and I wanted you to know how much it has meant to me. Disabled and from the UK I will never see the JMT myself, so thank you for filming the beauty of the trail as wonderfully as you have!
Sorry for the late reply. I have been busy with work lately and don't get on CZcams much these days. Your comment means a lot to me. I originally planned to make this video for my family, but I am so happy I shared it on CZcams now. I'm so glad that it has had a positive impact on you and others. Your comment captures a main reason I made this video, to share the beauty of the outdoors with others that could not be there with me; initially my family, but now so happy to include others. If you have not already seen it, the other video that is most similar to this one is The Mineral King Loop, A Backpacking Documentary. I did that one with my family in 2021. And, you are the first on CZcams to hear, I am close to posting my hike from last year on the North Lake South Lake Loop with two of my best friends. That loop covers part of the JMT. I am making that video similar in style to my JMT video. Thanks for watching and take care! Scott
Great video of a famastic trip.
Thanks for a great video.
Thanks for watching, Mike! Glad you enjoyed it.
Great video. I never did the whole JMT in one shot, but I did many portions at different times in the 1980's. Brings back memories of good times.
Thank you, Gary. Definitely good times. An experience I’ll never forget.
Great video; we did it the exact same route, in late August 2019; it was perfect timing; two weeks of relentless hiking with heavy backpacks, stopping only at VVR. Proper training really paid off.
It was an adventure of a lifetime.
Congratulations!
Happy hiking!
Congratulations to you too on your hike! 2019 was a big snow year. Did you encounter any snow at the higher elevations? Thanks for watching!
@@outdooradventurefilms1436 not much; there was a little around Helen lake/Muir pass and small patches at Forester and Whitney.
August is the best month to do it, there’s little or no snow and temps are not as cold at night. I didn’t pack an extra layer and got really cold on the last two nights inside YNP.
@@franciscogarza8273 Interesting what you said about being cold in YNP. My two coldest nights were at lower elevations. I had freezing temperatures overnight at McClure Meadow and then another cold night at Crater Meadow. Oddly enough, warmer temps at the higher elevations.
@@outdooradventurefilms1436 sounds familiar; it was a strong cold front on 9/10-11 what made for a couple of 20 degree nights.
Oh my goodness! I had to stop the video and comment again. I had planned, before I left home, to camp at Rose Lake....but, when I got to that junction, I just freaked myself out about going off the JMT. I was already solo, and wasn't brave enough to be super-solo. Lol Your camps have been fairly close to mine. Again, having fun reliving the hike!
Hi Rose, Thank you for watching! Yes, Rose Lake is definitely going super-solo:). There was nobody there and I had to really search to find my camp tucked up in the trees. I also heard a pack of coyotes while I was up there, so it was a little eerie. It is beautiful though. The sunset at Rose Lake is what I used as the thumbnail for this video. The fishing was good too. I'm glad you had fun reliving the hike! I had fun reliving it while putting this video together.
Thanks for sharing this adventure! Great quality 👍
Thank you for watching! This was my first attempt at a video, so I'm glad you liked it.
Excellent cinematography!
I have always wanted to do the John Muir Trail but my knees wouldn't let me. I have been to a few of the areas you were at and have fond memories of them. Thanks for that and this wonderful film.
Thank you so much for watching, David! I will always have fond memories of the trail and hope to revisit at least parts of it.
Great video! I spent 5 days fishing between Marie Lake and Mono Hot Springs. Walking around and fishing Rose Lake with nobody in sight is amazing!
Yes, I had a great time fishing on the trail. I only wish I could have done more. Rain and lightning got in my way a couple days. Fishing was great at Middle Rae Lakes and Rose Lake!
We very much enjoyed your documentary, thank you for providing this wonderful video of your adventure. We (my wife and I) are planning on a 2022 NOBO hike and we may add on about 3 or 4 days for various side excursions and/or fishing. Happy trails to you and your family!
Hello again Gerhard! Once again, thanks for watching! I think that's a great idea to add a few days. Take your time and enjoy it. I wish I had more time for fishing. Weather got in my way a little bit. I caught a few though. I didn't make it over to Bench Lake, but I heard the fishing was good there too. Best of luck to you and your wife preparing for your adventure!
Great video. I think we were several days behind you and we had to leave the trail over Duck Pass due to smoke etc. Glad you made it through.
Thank you, Jim! I'm sorry you had to leave the trail. We were very lucky as far as our time table. Early in the season, we were worried the trail would not be open due to COVID and then we finished right as the fires were really growing. We started August 2nd and finished August 27th. I hope you still enjoyed the time you were out there. Thanks for watching!
Great job
Thanks for sharing your adventure! Great footage and photos, especially the bear. Glad your buddy got to finish with you! New sub.
Thank you for watching! Too great of an adventure to not share! I see you have some great adventures on your channel too. I look forward to checking them out. Thanks for the sub!
I just had to stop the video and say "Thank YOu!" I did the JMT 2020 NOBO solo starting at Horseshoe Meadow, but went over New Army Pass. I am loving reliving the trail with you. (I started Aug 20, finished at Happy Isle on Sept 11.)
You're welcome!! Thank you for watching! New Army Pass looks like a beast. I would like to try that route sometime and see Cottonwood Lakes too. Congrats on finishing the hike!
Thanks for sharing your story. Good job on the video and trip. Bummer about your friend having to get off trail. It seems that delayed you itinerary a bit. Looked like it might have been 14 to VVR cutoff?
I’ve got a NOBO permit from horse show in Early Aug this year. Contemplated a 12 day carry but have since jumped on a shared mule supply. The supply will force rest early at Charlotte so not leaving there until later on Sat or first thing Sunday. My wife must exit on the following Sunday from VVR. Hoping to arrive by Fri but that might be a grind! Good job on th3 fuel. I did 11 days in the Winds last august and used three 3.9 ounce canisters. Breakfast with coffee and dinners with a cuposoup and hot cocoa so I wasn’t being stingy! Ran out on my last day with a third bonus coffee! Good luck on your next trip!
Thank you for the comment. Yes 14 days to VVR. The ferry to VVR was not running anymore due to the low lake level. Most people used the Bear Creek Trail as a shortcut. I didn’t want to miss a single step of the trail, so I went all the way to Mono Creek and walked in to VVR on the trail along the north shore. Then I lucked out in getting a water taxi back. Yes, I brought the big fuel canister. If I had it to do again, I would bring the 8 oz and replace it with a new one at MTR. That’s great you get to bring your wife for part of the hike. You two enjoy your hike! Scott
great video - thanks for sharing - planning your exact route for this summer - at age 74 this should be interesting
Thank you for watching, Robert! This was a great route. Great to hear you are out there at 74! That is very inspiring and I hope to be out there in my 70s as well. Enjoy your hike!
Wow, what an incredible hike, the scenery was breathtaking, I'm in the uk and too late for me to travel too far now, but I love the JMT, so thank you for such a wonderful video, awesome! Music tracks were great too!
Good on ya Robert!!!
Thank you, Jilly. Sorry for such a late reply. I just saw your comment buried under the main comment. Yes, the JMT is beautiful. I've never been to the UK, but hope to make it there some day. Thank you for watching!
Loved this video thank you!
Thank you, Kathy. Glad you liked it!
Nice 👍👍
Wow this is a beautiful film, love seeing those marmots. But boy is the JMT rocky looking, few trees, is mostly above where they grow. What do you have to do to be ready for something like this? I'd be swimming in Rae Lakes, looks pretty. I hike about 30-40 miles a week, and am pushing for longer, and steeper climbs every week it seems, from where I live in Orange County. Bummer your bud had to exit the trail though.
Thank you for watching! Yes, lots of marmots at the upper elevations. The JMT is pretty high in altitude, but there is still a bit of diversity. I usually camped in the trees every night in case there was inclement weather overnight. But yes, the passes are all pretty much above the tree line. Rae Lakes is beautiful. The Rae Lakes Loop is a great introduction to the JMT. If you are hiking 30-40 miles a week, you are doing great! My cousin and I never did more than that during our training. I was doing some other workouts such as light weight training and some running. We usually do one big training hike before our trips; usually San Gorgonio or San Jacinto. Those aren't too far from Orange County. Thanks again for watching and for taking the time to comment!
I really enjoyed your video! We did the JMT in 2019 which was a huge snow year so the rivers were much higher. I have to give you credit for continuing on solo after you buddy had to bailed. I am not sure that I would have been as committed! Love the video.
Steve and I did the Rae Lakes Loop in 2019, so I do remember that being a big snow year. 2017 was also a big snow year. We did the High Sierra Trail that year. Yes, the nights at camp were a little lonely once Steve had to bail, but I still really enjoyed the trip. Thanks for watching!
so cool congratulations
Thanks Bradyn!
I am planning to hike the JMT in August. 10 years ago I had to bail during a really high snow year.
Hi Roberta. I'm so glad you get to try it again. August will be fine as far as snow, especially for this year. Have a great trip!
Nice! Thanks for pointing out where you where as you went, and where you were staying each night! I have a NOBO starting September 7th, and going to try to finish in 15-16 days, but allocated the 7th-26th juuuuuuuuuuust in case I do a lot of CYOA!
Awesome! You’ll have an amazing journey!
I'm going NOBO out of Horseshoe Meadow on 9/12/21, but I doubt I'll catch you :) I also enjoyed the video and will be watching again to jot down all the campsites as possible stops for my buddy and I.
NOBO on Sept 6th... but just got SOBO out of Happy Isles Sept 21????????? Regardless... ENJOY!!!
@@johnanderson8096 Well then, we'll be passing each other at some point!
I know you all will enjoy the trail and hopefully run into each other! Happy Trails!
Scott looks like a great trip. Where did you resupply.
Hi Rick. I resupplied at Muir Trail Ranch and Red's Meadow. We didn't want to take the extra day or two to hike out to Onion Valley and back, so I carried 12 days of food from Horseshoe Meadow to Muir Trail Ranch. After that, it was about a 6 or 7 day food carry from the last two stretches.
@@outdooradventurefilms1436 Scott thanks for the info. I’m planning my 2022 JMT hike now and found your film helpful. What’s next for you.
@@rickcosgriff8268 I'm glad you found the film helpful. Thanks for watching! As for my next trip, I'm bringing the family (my wife and two daughters) on the Mineral King Loop in July. I originally wanted to take them on the Rae Lakes Loop, but permits were all snapped up. I hear Mineral King Loop is difficult, so I had wanted to do it on my own first. I know they can do it, but hoping it is enjoyable for them. You'll love the JMT! Are you planning southbound or northbound?
Great Video! What did you use to film the video? Did you use a tripod?
Thanks, Sharon! I originally was just making a home movie for my family, so I didn't bring anything fancy. I just used my iPhone 8+. I used a small flexible tripod made by Jobi for some of the shots. Thanks for watching!
What happened to your buddy that he had to leave the trail? ( Was it something back home he had to deal with or ?)
Hi Rob. Sorry for the late reply. He jammed his toe real bad coming down Forester Pass. Luckily he was able to join me again at Red Meadows. Thanks for watching!
good stuff. would have loved to not had the music. but im sure some like it. prefer asmr'esqe
Great video and and very informative. But BG sound is a BIG (can't stress enough) is turn off. Can't hear what you saying and constantly had to keep pressing mute button and unmute button. I wish BG sound is kept to low ALL the time not just while you talking. and I wish your voice is at BG sound level.
Besides, I wish CZcams gives that option of muting BG sound.
Thanks for the feedback Menalto! This was my first attempt ever at making a video, let alone for CZcams. Initially, I did not intend to put it on CZcams. It was definitely a learning experience. Are you talking about just the natural background sound being too loud for my voice or the screwy audio when I tried to reduce the background noise? I'm guessing a little of both. Yes, I learned my lesson on this trip. I need to be closer to the camera when talking, especially near a creek. I do really appreciate the feedback. Thanks for watching!
@@outdooradventurefilms1436 wow.. for 1st video, you did a tremendous job. no doubt. appreciate your efforts. (because information you giving is really valuable)
@@tedmenalto1712 Thank you!
