    When you are riding a train from London to any northern destination you see The Battersea power station 🚉 and until the 90's it was fully intact. It was a fairly ominous structure & now its part of a very hip new neighborhood.

    461 Ocean blvd was taken in the backyard just to the right of the swimming pool. You can easily see @1:50 into the vid, that window he's in front of on the cover is the back right side of the house with the green covers over the windows now. The shape of that porch and the windows above it are all still the same. The tree he was on is just gone. The rebuilding of the house didn't change that part at all. Geez. that's one of the easier ones lol.

    The Pink Floyd Animals / Battersea cover from 1977 - one of the most iconic rock album covers ever - was also the biggest photoshop job ever (long before there was such a thing) - and just like the music on that record - it just worked.

    Great video! I love the fact that in the movie Children of Men, the Battersea Power Station is featured in it and they've got an inflatable pig floating above it as a nod to the Pink Floyd album, a nice touch.

  • @murkywalters297
    @murkywalters297 Před 3 lety +1

    Something more that I read in a book about Hipgnosis- they wanted the pig in the sky to be real, and they took some shots of it before it broke free, but the sky was clear and boring. They later took some shots of just the power station with a more dramatic sky. After all the trouble, they ended up cutting and pasting the pig into the better sky scene anyway.

    Its true i guess, Zeppelin's first album cover some would still say, was Jimmy pages prediction...forshadowing his future with his band. Going down in flames.. I could see the parallels with all the bad karma and eerie thing's that went on with them. Still a cool album cover, simple and cool.

    5:04 Great album cover location video, Frank. Regarding the Hindenburg disaster illustrated on the iconic Led Zeppelin cover, I have a 16mm reel of the disaster (B&W, silent) which was probably used in a school for historical educational purposes.
    There was also a movie made, 'The Hindenburg' (from 1975), which provided an interesting conspiracy-laden take on the disaster and it starred a lot of top actors of that era including George C. Scott, Ann Bancroft, etc. although the movie had very mixed reviews. Still, it captured the luxury and elegance of the airship and featured the original black and white footage which included the infamous "Oh, the humanity!" quote from the reporter covering the disaster as it unfolded before his eyes.

      I'm with you that one..to me that is a top ten classic album cover...I remember all the Credence covers from when I was a kid ...I was birn in the 80s but even into the 90s my friends parents still had their record collections.
      Anyway my best friends mother and father owned a bad ass record player that had like six speakers with it and all those buttons and knobs to turn up each speaker and play around with the sound.
      My friends mother ended up giving me that record player in 1998 when I turned 18 and Gave me some albums that she had doubles of...willy and poor boys was one of them and Fleetwood Mac rumors was one of them and many more.
      Sorry for the misspellings I do t have time at the moment to go back and fight with my phone to correct what it autocorrected.

    I remember there was a lot of controversy about the first Led Zeppelin album cover, due to the deaths involved with the Hindenburg accident. Shortly before that album came out I remember seeing the film footage of the accident and the impassioned voice over by Herbert Morrison. 'Oh the humanity!" As one of the Construction Managers on redeveloping Battersea Power Station, I can tell you that those iconic chimneys were all demolished due to safety concerns, and shorter reproductions built - these are the ones in your modern photograph - hard to tell the difference. Apple Corp. will move into the Power Station when complete along with many Retailers. The surrounding buildings will be predominately residential apartments. A new Underground (subway) will serve the site. A new ‘flying pig’ was made for publicity, I don’t know where it is though. A number of well known people have moved in already.

    • @aarfeld
      @aarfeld Před 3 lety

      @@redzeppelin6 Quite possibly, but I think that the real issue here was that the property values there have climbed considerably over the past nearly 50 years, and later owners wanted to add to the house's value by expanding it. It was a rental when Clapton and other artists stayed there in the '70s. Criteria Studios, which is a short drive away, might have even held it on a retainer for out of town clients working at their studio.

    True story.... when I was growing up in England, I live near the area where the building with the four big chimneys which at the time I didn't know the name of the building until years later anyway whenever I would go to school and back,I would see those big chimneys you would see them from miles.However on one particular day I was walking home It was not a school day I just minding my own business on that day, and I would see the same old building with those chimneys but then I would see something very Odd and strange right between the big chimneys..... was a flying PIG!!! I thought it was the strangest thing I've EVER seen.at the time, I've never heard of pink Floyd until two years later at that time a song called "another brick in the wall"came out and it became a big hit for them but I didn't make the connection between building, that band and especially that flying plastic PIG until two years later when my family moved to America to live with our extend family and getting used to the country, and the area and places like that, I'd be visiting various places,I just happened to walk into a record store that day so I started to just brose around looking into the record rack and would see a bunch of pink Floyd records and to my surprise, I come across one particular album of theirs where the album cover is of that building with the flying pig and I thought "WOUW" what do you know so I looked carefully at the record and found out that the name of the album is called "ANIMALS" and it was originally released in 1977,it was amazing so to this day whenever I would tell someone that I lived across the street from that building that years later I would find out that it's the BATTERSEA POWER building, they would say "wow, that was awesome" I own a copy of that album to this day along with other pink Floyd albums obviously so whenever I look at at that animals album cover it's a constant reminder of that day that saw a flying PIG in the sky!

      Don't mention "Stairway to Gilligan's Island" to Jimmy Page. The song made him mad as hell.

    Try the street where David Bowie stood on the cover of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars. The address is 23 Heddon Street, London. It's completely changed and the only thing left that is recognizable is the street lamp on the building outside the door.

      I was considering that one for this video, but passed for the reasons you noted. That said, may still be interesting!

    I believe the pig was actually pasted on after the fact because they were having weather issues, and the pig broke away. They just took a picture of the station with the best Skyview they could get, and added the pig later.
    I also read that the entire cover is essentially a collage, because of the weather not producing the exact aesthetic view Roger wanted, therefore pasting the pig and the tower on top of a Skyview. This isn't far off from what hypnosis does anyway, so its possibly true.
    This was my first exposure to, and favorite record by, Pink Floyd. Got it at a yard sale for 50c around 93. It was in perfect condition and I guess no one was that bothered by records at that time. I was only 12.

    That castle you show at the very end in Northern Ireland is also the basis of what they used for Greyjoy's Castle in Game of Thrones (although heavily photoshopped)

    1:52 the building on the left with the darker brown roof, chimney on th right is OBVIOUSLY the spot. The curvy palm tree is even visible, as is the sun room area directly behind Eric...Its literally right there. It says 451, but that has got to be the building.
