- Let's take a look at the BMW i3s, the refreshed version of BMW's popular premium, compact, city car. With more power and a number of updates, is this the future, is the future now, when will the electric world be fully upon us?
Kicking off with a walkaround of the exterior and interior to look at the updates to the BMW i3s over the regular i3, then it's time to explore some tight and twisty roads to experience the drive on a road test. Finally let's go in more detail around the dashboard and displays inside the small electric car.
Thanks for watching, Tim

The I3 is underrated. Been driving them a lot during my visit to the capital city in my country. They are very fun to drive and the acceleration is amazing!
I Agree...it's underrated. People forget that it's been in production since 2013. That's a long time for a pure EV and IMO it's still very cool. BMW must have learned a truckload about EVs from this platform.
My wife and I love our i3. A great daily car to throw around. Two things you didn’t mentioned. First there is no center console. It makes it so much easier to get on the driver seat without getting out of the car. Second, you can actually move and fold the seat forward with the ledge at the back of the head rest so you can get in to the back seat much easier.

Thanks for the review. Though probably the best car for me living in Seattle it’s just not my cup of tea. To me that dash look like a cheap LED watch & I want passion in my cars, I see none here.
You're so polite Tim hahaha can feel the "WTF is this!?" in your voice HAHAHA :D
My neighbour has one of these and just drove it yesterday, I thought it was excellent. it lacks in range, but I think in time that will change. great design. very cool car. perfect for urban use.
You really can’t say anything negative about this car until you drive it. Amazing little city car
I've just ordered one for myself for Christmas. I can't believe that Tim has reviewed this great little car with all the hypercars he gets to own and drive. ☑️
Schmee your the man! You put out so many vlogs, I can't keep up! Got to love it!!!!
I believe the front seats fold forward for easier rear seat access.
Thank you Shmee , for doing a video on the coolest small BMW. I love the i3. I wish I could buy one
TuTto ApPoStO a FeRrAgOsTo ma va in figa dio cane

Thank you :)
Love your videos ! Keep it up
Squaaaaad checking in!!🙋🏾♂️
Yes! I love the i3 but not many others seem to be fans, glad you've done a video on it now shmee!
R.S also love it, even the “normal” one it’s amazing ! The version with the REX it’s the perfect daily imo
The reason why electric cars are so popular here in norway (and the i3) is because you doesn't have to pay VAT and one-time fee when buying the car, toll-roads, free parking in the city, you can use bus-line and so on!
If the city is built for them it is a great idea. Unfortunately in Australia in most places they would just get run over by a B-Double truck . that is if you could even find a power supply to recharge. Our government is next to useless when it comes to adopting technology. We still have some non air conditioned electric trains and the temperatures have reached 42 degrees c lately outside. Let alone inside a tin can.
Wow, really?
Norway is actually really good on that, even on a random mountain pass you can find Tesla/electric car charges.
Great video tim. Also this is a great little car :)
thats a "Shmall" car
My family has had an i3 for the past 3 or 4 years. Such a quirky and fun car! I love it
Shmee you have excellent format I love your video peace and love😃😃😃😃

Great video
Another great video. 🦅🦅🇺🇸
Shquad!!! Greetings from Portugal !
love your vids !!!
Thank you :)
Fascinating test Electric Cars are very interesting and a real eye opener
On 2nd for commuting..... Such a joy to drive and so well in its build quality.
All these people slating, I bet most drive diesel shopping trolleys! Mine costs me £3 to charge and it is quick when you want, very easy and relaxing when you want. Really great car.
Drive i3s, leafs, teslas, hybrids and diesels - both EVs and ICE have their uses. Most folk can't afford a new car be that ICE or EV. However, the i3 is a very good car but so is a 17 year old aluminium Audi A2.
My parents just bought 2 of these. His and Hers. They love em.

Thank you :)
shquad here!!!!!
Zippy electric vehicle with a dose of practicality and luxury at its finest. Had the chance to drive it as part of the extended test drive with the range extender. Loved it though it looks like a furby on wheels from the front.
Been in one of these , but not the s version . Great little thing i loved it.
Great vlog
Love that BMW i3s with range-extender, in Spacep0d white of course. :D
Most people miss the point of this vehicle. Compact dimensions, great visibility and rapid acceleration and zero fuel being burned whilst stuck in traffic add up to an awesome fun daily driver from suburbs into any CBD . Nothing to stop you putting a petrol engine car of your choice in a garage for weekends. I test drove one of these and a Volt. The second hand BMW was 45,000NZD the Volt just 30,000NZD. Passengers preferred the ride in the Volt and it was cheaper the Volt won . Sceptics need to drive an EV, they are just the mutts nuts for stress free commuting.
It finally looks better! Greetings from autobahN POV videos :)
the cute bicycle brakes
Good to see you drive more elec vehicles
Hi Tim - I have one of these and I love it. My kids love the back as the windows are quite low in depth (lower than the driver/ passenger windows) and they love the better visibility. Gareth the dentist from Glasgow
I want this as a daily. Love new tech.
I think it's fabulous. Interior, drivetrain and all.
Hi, Tim, I've been thinking of the new I3s and the first thing that stands out is how silently it goes and the stately acceleration that the car is capable to provide you in any situation!!! My strong bias on this car is very strong and I can assure you that this model will be chosen by many people who want enjoy the driving and at the same time saving the environment. The one thing that I'd like to get off my chest is that if you hadn't been so busy travelling around the world, would you have thought to buy one of these?
Cool video
Awwww what a cute little car 💕🚗
Thank's for these review! I drive a first gen. i3 as my daily and i can tell you, that thing is nice and makes a lot of fun every day, but even more if the roads becoming wet with the small(155er) winter tires on the back... You know what i mean ;-)
Nice ride
I've only ever Driven the bmw i8 super hybrid car.
But I'm sure This bmw i3s is a fantastic drive.
The i3s looks really good in real life, the BMW dealer had one of the two in Norway.
Squad Present!
The futur is coming 🙌🏽 🇩🇪 thank you BMWi #iLovei3S
I can't believe how much this bugger works!
What we need on electric cars like this is a giant speaker on the front which yells "Get the f**k out of the way!" If the front sensors detect people who may not have heard the car coming
We could built-in a PA system so that you can talk to people outside the car? ;)
Shmee150 would be useful when you head through a drive-through McDonald's
I think this issue is rather overstated. At least in the US, where diesels are uncommon save for some trucks, engines are so quiet that you can barely hear them, and certainly can't hear them above tire noise of an approaching car. Hearing a Tesla drive by is identical to hearing just about anything else drive by.
Mitchell Steindler . Agree it is still an area of debate and now electric or "quieter" cars are on the rise on our roads I have yet to hear any statistics saying that these cars are any greater danger to the public that traditional loud cars. That being said, perhaps the data has not been accumulated over a long enough period
I'm not sure why I found that so hilarious. hahahaa, i'm dying
I have the old one 2014. Greatest car ever
Paul von Düsseldorf any issues out of your 2014 model?
Even Matt Farah had a lot of good things to say about the i3. It really surprised him
Hi guys I’m shmee ..Hello 👍🏽😅... great video
Thank you :)
Tim, your videos have been just outstanding as of late....when will your mates return to make some appearances? All the best in this holiday season. (Mike in Ohio)
There is a new video with Ben coming up tomorrow :)
I love my i3!! Brilliant car😊
They're great commuters. I'm on my second lease in Los Angeles!
Just got one they are amazing town cars ...sport button makes it into an amazing gocart v.fast 😀
I'm using a drivenow i3 from time to time - and this car is fantastic. Like the outside a lot, the ride is excellent. If I just could afford one...
EV cars will come down in price when they are more mass produced.
Is there a way of opening the back doors without opening the front ones first?
I’ve been looking for this color combination in a used one forever. I haven’t been able to find one at all.
Seems to me that just about every single person who tries the little i actually likes it, especially around town. Just one of those cars that makes people smile. Personally, I like the whole hemp and wood thing going on and I'm really looking forward to seeing what comes next from BMW in this market sector
Cool. I live around this place :D
Shmee, your thoughts on lotus evora 430 GT ???
Shmee when are you going to drive a Nio EP9? You did a video about the car last year but it would be cool to see a new video about that car. Haven't seen someone driving it yet. After all it set a crazy time on the Nurburgring so it should be something special.
They are not offering drives anymore.
Good review Shmee150, albeit a few years on now. The i3 is an ingenious and iconic EV, although they will stop production as of 2022. Please can you review its unofficial successor?; The Boldly styled, effervescent BMW i4!💪🏼💥
Doors remind me of the Mazda RX8.
6:58 Shmees guilty pleasure
The dealbreaker for me is that it’s only a 4 seater, five seats would have been nice.
Please do a video around Christmas on how you and your team are doing a video/anything related to the Shmee150 brand!
6:57 hahaha that reaction....
Good vid but charge Time is ? Boot space is ? What's under the bonnet? And I imagine. Very reflective dash console in windscreen ?
How does it feel acceleration wise compared to say a VW Golf GTi or Focus ST?
The B-pillar is built in to the rear door.
The ordinary i3 is a blast to drive (but not the prettiest). The i3s will be better, but the looks remind me of the sports version of the Audi A2 they did back in 2003!
It's an awesome car. My wife drives this and it's a blast to drive, quick, well built and all carbon fibre. Not for minimum wagers though.
Is the difference between 94ah and 120ah very noticeable? Should I throw in extra cash for the 120ah? I'm not a person who drive far between home and work. I don't do long trips alot etc...
Can you do an Ikea trip in it? You probably should negotiate a long term loaner for trotting around Frankfurt.
Think you’ll ever give the X3 M40i a go?
When will the Shmee score start
We have had this car for 2+ years. It is very common now in the USA.
Hopefully our future is much, quite literally speaking, better looking.
Luckily the future is not about the looks... ;) It is a lot more about car ownership, car sharing, new ways of transport and new kinds of propulsion.
No argument there, Shmee. Subscription based everything is definitely sticking around. However, I don't let a chance to mock the i3 looks go.
This car looks much better in person. The proportions work much better
Berry middle of the road
Keep to the super cars looks like you where falling asleep to🙈🍻🍻
Getting one i3s feb. 2021 :D
You mixed up kWh and kW @3:07 Kilowatt hour (kWh) is a unit of energy, in this case battery capacity, while Kilowatt (kW) is a unit of power (we usually say horse power) as we know it from car engines or now electric motors, but it's for example also used to rate the power of chargers. Very common to mix those up, but it's good to be aware of it, because it can get confusing when talking about EVs and one talks about battery capacity or range and the other one about engine performance and the other one about charging speed.
i3s
94 Ah/33 kWh
135 kW/184 hp
Good thinking :)
I believe the public will eventually get used to the lack of noise from e-Cars, and at least there will be less congestion sounds on the city streets (and people on their DAMN PHONES will pay more attention!)but suspect classic muscle cars will either have to go through a conversion process or pay through the noise for petrol. 17:14, the area with the support strap, I'm curious why BMW wouldn't make this for extra storage, it just looks like a unless gap with an i3 plaque.
Show the boot space in future
Why did you not show boot capacity
I considered one of these but used. So, the Sport version ist really any different than the basic I3 as far as performance. Its more of an appearance than performance
It looks like they glued three different cars together.
After my f80 m3 it will also be an i3s
The V pillar is the back door
my friend has an i3 and i dont get the hate for the car. His whole family hates it except himself. I love the legroom in the front and it looks definetly better than the other electric compact cars
Nice vid
Thank you :)
You haven’t even watched the video :)
There are no A sides in the interior of an i3 - it is all B sides (surfaces) due to the environmental considerations and solutions initially developed for the i3. The summary of the study used to develop the interior materials and solutions cover more than 80 pages and has been used in at least University in Germany. Somehow even the latest Lagonda concept is trying out natural materials to replace leather while keeping a luxury feel. On the good side it seams that most new EV´s do in fact drive well, enough that it gets mentioned by the Journalists driving them, of which most are pretty spoiled. ;)
I am admittedly a Tesla fangirl but I am seriously considering this as well. It's adorable! My husband hates the doors because every time a passenger is in the back wants to get out, you HAVE to open your door to let them out. I can get that I guess. I have read that it is hard to find the skinnier wheels and that they are expensive as well. Still on my list though :)
Think of it as a 3 door hatchback with better access!
Wheels or tyres? Quite easy to find tyres now even the 20" ones.
The absence of the B pillar makes it look like a big car.
Do a garage Tour!!!! :)
