    • @baddog9320
      @baddog9320 Pƙed rokem +22

      I'm confused.
1st My Drill Sargent in the 80s were called Drill Sargent not by their rank.
Next you do know that there were Drill Corporal in the 80s right?
My Basic, one DS was an E5 and one was a E6 the only E7 DS in the company was Senior Drill Sargent. And we could call him Drill Sargent or Senior Drill Sargent.
All the others in the company were E5 and E6.
But the Next company over, Charlie, had a Drill Corporal.
      1986 Ft Dix.
Now Leonardwood you had to be E5(P) to go to Drill Sargent School. And even though it wasn't official. At graduation you were promoted.
Just like SF you could go to Q course as a E4..But before you donned the green beret you made E5, if not E6.
Now back in the 80s I don't know the situation on the Drill Corporals.
But the one in Charlie, rumor had it that he was a E5. And he had fun in the sheets. Now a few years later at Leonardwood. He would have been kicked off the trail.
Oh and Leonardwood and Ft. Sam ( ft Sam DS go through drill Sargent school at Leonardwood) they went by Sargent. No matter the rank. And I don't remember Ft Sam (mid 90s) being anything but E6. But I also don't remember senior in bravo school or Papa.

Why would he haze her? A lot of people dont realize that training instructors from any branch are not going to scream or berate you 100% of the time. Most of that happens in the first couple weeks in order to get you in the necessary mindset to thrive in basic.
When I was in boot, most of our instructors instructions and corrections were given in a level voice just like this. make no mistake they will light you up if you do something really stupid, or from far away, but once they close the distance on you, it becomes a personal correction.

Italian here! Its not common, but I believe it's a genuine mistake that can happen because of a faulty translation: most of the times, 'master' is translated as 'padrone' ('owner') which is the closest word to the original meaning; however, in the past it was sometimes translated as 'signor' which is just an old, respectful title, similar to 'Sir' or 'gentleman'.
Someone in the comment mentioned that she meant 'Maestro', but that is usually a title either for a musican or a teacher dealing with small children. From secondary school to university, teachers are called 'professore' or 'insegnante'.

He's being silly. She mis read his rank. "Master sergeant" is the next rank up in the army and would be the equivalent airforce pay grade. The navy also has a master chief petty officer and Marines have a master gunnery sergeant, though depending on the situation you might call these ranks gunny or chief and the airforce might be sir or sergeant. a drill instructor can often take this opportunity to humiliate a trainee but it's possible this is a training base and not basic training and he's just playing with nervous trainees. Perhaps when he hears her accent and realizes words might be difficult for her he backs up and turns it into something to laugh about.
Army tends to use a person's rank if possible but they might also want you to avoid being over specific especially for officer ranks where the extra adjective points out that you are the lower of that title. For instance to cann someone a 2nd lieutenant is less acceptable than just saying lieutenant because it is the lower of the lieutenants and making the extra effort to point that out doesn't really honor the person as much. The same goes for lieutenant major or lieutenant Colonel, you'd say "Major" or "Colonel" so his position might be drill instructor and his rank might be sergeant first class but if she was to come across a master sergeant he probably wouldn't be mad to be addressed as such if she were being overly cautious but "sergeant" is probably fine. Everyone with stars are "General" and again any adjective or precursor to general is lower than a general who has 4 stars. except if it's a rare 5 start where they hold the title general of the army.

This guy is off by quite a bit because we aren't in Basic for every long and once we're out, we'll encounter a lot of Master Sergeants in the USAF, Army and fewer in the Marines and even fewer in the Navy.

About time USMC did that for Enlisted Instructors. “Sir” and “Ma’am” terms are supposed to be for addressing commissioned officers only. That is age-old military tradition.

@@Ryan_Christopher I mean not really when you think about recruits in boot camp are not Marines, so the drill instructors are not enlisted Marines talking to junior enlisted Marines but rather Marines talking to civilians becoming Marines. So Sir/Ma’am is applicable in boot camp
