- I made this simple Bridge Doctor at home - inspired by the commercially available and well made JLD Bridge Doctor - for my 12 string Dreadnought Yamaha FG-420-12.
This is a follow up video to whatever repair work I had already done - seen in this video (to remove the top/belly bulge): • Acoustic Guitar Belly-...

very well done, I have Martinez with a belly bulge not worth the expense of buying the bridge doctor but I will give this a go.
@@jamesrichardfield-mitchell4447 Thank you. Yes, give it a shot. I did it because it wasn't worth spending top $ on my old guitar - but still wanted to keep it in good playable condition.
Thanks for diy inspiration!
@@et_kokemus thanks for your message. My best wishes to you in your projects.
Good fix Prem. I appreciate the videos since I just bought 1975 Ibanez Concord 684 with some belly. As you did, I am humidifying with some weight on the belly and will see what happens the next few days. I like your homebuilt Bridge Doctor and may have to follow you on that well. Good bless.
Hi Mike! Thanks for your feedback. That 684 is a classic - although I've never seen one. Yes, give it a shot. God bless you too.
Excellent. Yes, the cost of the JLD feels is pegged at a premium level! This can be made and tried. ThanQ you, Menon.
A quarter inch Dowel,
¾” Wide Doctor bridge,
3.5” height,
Good going!
Thanks so much for your feedback, Suresh. Yes, quiet often many (simple) items are overpriced. A bit of trial and error DIY gets the job done. If it's a very expensive guitar, better to first try it on something that won't bother us if the DIY goes bad....and that's exactly what I did.
You arer giving me an inspiration to solve the bulging of my FC 100C.
@@s1bee please try. I get inspired by many, and I just pass it on. 😀
@@PremMenon I was thinking of making a poster with that guitar, hearing that it can not be repaired. Then bounced on this bridge doctor thing and soon found the cost so good to think other ways. Just took the dimensions of the doctor block and was to reaffirm everything and found you. Already ordered two blocks of pinewood and a pack of dowels. Let me try. I will be back here.
@@s1bee that's awesome! I look forward to hearing the outcome. Try capturing that on video, and post it. The way I work is: I don't beg anyone to subscribe or give a 👍. I'm happy if my work is an inspiration to at least one person....to try it. That's the motive behind all my videos. Wish you the best!
Wonderful innovation, superb, going to try it out, thanks for sharing.
Idea is not mine. I just built it. Thanks for your feedback.
Wow! Thanks for the upload - very inspirational and helpful
Thank you for your kind words.
I spent 3 hours walking round my local hardware store looking for "elbow grease".. I take it you only get that in Canada 🤔
😂 LoL that's a good one. Thanks for checking it out. 👍
It’s usually in the same aisle as True Grit.
@nickdryad 🤓
Great stuff
Thank you!

Hate to be a Debbie downer but that block will split based on the direction of the grain in that wood. I think that's why the original bridge doctor uses the nylon screw spacer. attatchment.
Thank you, Rob. I learnt it the hard (practical?) way. After it cracked I realized why a nylon spacer was used. Did have to make another one, and that's still holding. Nylon is recommended, though.
Depends on how much that end of the wood "U" can "bend".
Thanks for your feedback.
What is the length of the dowel?
@@mojoefelix depends on your Bridge placement with reference to the guitar end. Better to have a 9" long, and cut as needed.
Nicely done Prem!
Thanks for your feedback.
Hey Prem, thank you for sharing the video, great job and detailed explanations!
I see at 9:07 that the rod seems to be pushing against the body, not the tail block, or is it just the block that has such a weird shape?
Thank you for your feedback, and for checking out my video.
It's the tail block.
@@PremMenon Thank you! I'll try to build one myself for my 12-string guitar tomorrow.
@@pace_of_mind yes, worth trying. My best wishes to you.
@@PremMenon It worked like a charm on my guitar, there is still a bit of belly left, but the bridge does not look so scary anymore!
@side_gig wow! Glad it worked for you, and thanks for your feedback. I guess, let it sit for a few days with that tension, then re-adjust as needed. As long as everything is holding well, and the action as well as the intonation are good, it's a success!
Pine wood is soft! The grain is weak in the direction of the force you are applying! This will fail at some point! The grain of the wood needs to be at 90 degrees for full strength !!
Thanks for the useful feedback. I'll re-do with a better wood soon. That was just an experiment....still holding.
Goodjjob uncle
Thank you!
did Bridge Doctor survive until now?
@@amicchi1081 😀hahaha....valid question. Yes, it's still in good shape, and the guitar too. Thanks for checking it out.
@@PremMenon oke thanks, i Will try it to my guitar at home .. i Will make it . And install it
@@amicchi1081 okay. Do let me know the outcome. It definitely helps. I saved my old guitar from the landfill..... because it was not economical to get a pro neck reset etc....and this worked out well for me. Good luck!
Should I detune the acoustic after i used it even it has bridge dr. already?
Normally I don't, unless the plan is to keep it in storage. Ideally, wall guitar hooks are the best.
Thanks for your message.
Thank you🙏🤟
