    I was one of those people that would walk in and out of the Korean grocery store. I'd grab green onions and grapes from the fresh section then packaged ramen then Pororo seaweed snacks because my kid LOVES them and rush out! This has really helped. I used your list to shop last time and my taste buds have been super happy ever since. Thanks so much for this. Only problem, now I'm addicted to goguma!!!!

    1. Korean chives is also known as Allium tuberosum, which is used in many East Asian cuisines. Some people call the plant Chinese chives or garlic chives or Nira green. Personally, I would use the scientific name, but if I have to use the common name, I would use "Chinese chives" because the plant originates from China, and "Korean chives" merely because I will be using it in Korean cuisine.
    2. Danmuji is also a Japanese food.
    3. Kimchi is uniquely Korean.

    Back home in Louisiana. I had gone to visit my Cousin who had moved to a different Parish while there he told me about this grocery store that had been reopened by a Korean couple. I am the kind of person who is open to try anything. They sold the standard Cajun and regular American food but they had hot food to. I had never had anything Korean in my life. They had these Korean style egg rolls and this soup That was just amazing.

    I think that perilla grew in my backyard in Tennessee; either that or some kind of pioneer basil escaped from an herb garden; it has a purplish underside, and a sweet licorice/basil aroma. It strikes me as a bit icky, but I think I would eat it, now, just to experience it. One doesn't usually eat one's lawn in the US; that probably has something to do with my attitude....

    If you're in the Chicago area, there are a few Korean grocery stores in Niles that you can check out. I'm not sure if they're still in business (I moved away in 2008 and have not visited since 2012), but there were two on Milwaukee Ave. One was called H-Mart and the other was called Assi. While I myself did not visit either of them while I was living in the Chicago area (I lived in Northbrook), I had friends who did and had good things to say about both stores.

    Great channel I just happened upon it from clicking off of a culinary school site. No idea why Korean food channel came up but ok. I watch foodies like Mike Chen, Best food channel with sonny where he started filming in Vietnam then hit all the other Asian countries and then there’s Mark Wein and my all time favorite Maangchi. I have never been to a Korean restaurant and I was never too fond of hot spicy foods but seeing the street foodies trying a a lot of diff Asian fooods and people like Mark weins the food ranger and Mike Chen eating at REAL Korean bbq and the lettuce wraps and kimchi I thought I would give it a try. So I watched Maangchi and tried kimchi for the first time. Now I must admit. I bought a small jar the only size or variety our store Kroger’s had. It was vegan. But I enjoyed it. I was surprised. I live in a little country town in Ohio BUT we have a HONDA OF AMERICA car factory here so we have a “little” diff varieties of Asian foods. Not a lot especially when it comes to veggies and as u are aware u need a lot more veggies that r almost impossible to get here. There’s a lady in Canada who is from Thailand she was born there and her family is still there grandparents ect. Her channel is Pailin’s kitchen or Hot Thai kitchen, And she went to culinary school and lives in Canada now. She has a cooking channel and thank goodness for her because she has almost the same problem that I do as far as grocery shopping so she will give ideas on what u can replace certain food items with other available food items. She’s luckier in the sense that they have more Chinese immigrants so they carry more Chinese foods. I like some authentic Chinese foods but I’m not a big fan of the Chinese 5 spice. I don’t know if it’s becuse of the star anise or what it is but it’s very strong for me and even if I only use a little I can still taste that star anise. So anyway I’m excited after finding ur channel and watching a few of ur videos. At first I was depressed because I knew I could not get a lot of the Korean food to use to cook with here. Well for some reason I decided to google Korean markets and a couple popped up in Columbus oh not too far away so hopefully I’m gonna hit them up this week sometime and see what they carry. So I wrote down everything u have on this show and I’ll start there. I couldn’t even get any fermented bean paste to make miso. Our store finally started carrying a white miso and a red miso I have no idea what the difference is but I guess I’ll find out. So if I can get the products I’m going to try some of ur receipes so don’t be surprised if u start seeing a lot of comments from me in the near future. Thank u and stay safe

      Woah thanks for your long comment! That is interesting that you found us by clicking off of a culinary school site, but I did go to culinary school, so maybe there's some kind of weird connection there. Technically, I wouldn't say our channel is a Korean food channel, but we did a season of our cooking show dedicated to Korean food, after I was inspired by a trip there one summer. So you will find a decent amount of Korean or Asian-inspired recipes too if that's what you're looking for. Our channel is actually dedicated to teaching beginner cooks how to gain kitchen confidence, so I'm glad this video helped you gain the confidence you need to do some Korean ingredient shopping! Thanks for taking the time to say hello and let me know more about you.

      +sarah lee Oh that's a nice tip... b/c I always just throw out the outer peelings... but that would be a good way to be extra resourceful. I usually just throw half an onion into my broths.

    Fabulous video you really helped me with a lot of questions I’ve had. I do have one question you didn’t cover in this video, Where do I find fish cake balls (I’ve on youtube videos in the street food stalls so many are differently colored & shaped) for Tteokbokki? I’ve only been putting in the typical rice cakes in my recipe as you can tell I’m trying to learn all I can about different cultures by their foods & making them for my family & friends. My way of bring our worlds a little closer. Beautiful informative video I really enjoyed it 💖

    • @ChefJulieYoon
      @ChefJulieYoon  Před 5 lety +1

      You should be able to find them in the Asian market in either the refrigerated or frozen section. I usually get the kind that are not colored, but it's up to you! Glad you found this video helpful.

    • @cherriberri7161
      @cherriberri7161 Před 5 lety

      Chef Julie Yoon thank you just confuse what to use I even seen some on CZcams that are flat & cut into squares then added to the Tteokbokki maybe you can do a quick segment on fish cakes?

    • @ChefJulieYoon
      @ChefJulieYoon  Před 4 lety

      For Tteokbokki, the flat ones cut into squares is what I'd use. For odeng soup, I use the kind that comes in different shapes on a stick. Other kinds with chopped up veggies mixed in sometimes are used for stir-fries, but really it's not that big of a deal whichever one you use. They all taste pretty similar and can be used in multiple applications.

    Buy “Sempio” brand, the most popular and the safest, either hot pepper paste or fermented bean paste or ssamjang. Most of Korean use this brand. Dont choose cheaper brand. If you pay extra couple of dollars, you can taste good food for a few months.
