Should we start preparing for Russia's collapse?

  • "Compare the picture we saw today of President Zelensky in Izyum, surrounded by soldiers... to the guy who is who has never been near his troops since 2014, except on a victory day parade and stays at the end of a long table from even his closest advisers, what a contrast."
We need to start preparing for Russia's collapse as Ukraine's offensive keeps up momentum says Former US Army Commander in Europe Ben Hodges.

All of these deaths are a result of the "resistance" in Russia trying to get inside of Putin's head and make him more paranoid. These are people well within Putin's inner circle being assassinated. Russia's been in terminal decline for decades now. Their demography in particular has just been horrendous. Sooner, or later it would come crashing in on itself. The war in Ukraine was one last desperate grasp at holding things together and for Putin to buy more time to stay in power. The problem with these kind of moves is that they're huge gambles which if you lost things come crashing down faster. A gamble that Putin seems to have lost. What really got him is that he seemed very unaware of how bad corruption has hamstrung his own military and the Ukrainians will and ability to fight. Funny enough one contributing factor to the sinking of the Moskva was that emergency equipment was under lock and key because people kept stealing it. I've never been sold on Russian military might, but I always figured Ukraine would be something they could handle, the most they could handle really and they couldn't even manage that.
What is ironic is that the Russian backed insurgency in Donbass and Luhansk has likely gone a long in preparing Ukraine. Ukraine in a lot of ways is like a little Russia. It has a lot of the same demographic issues as Russia, in an economic rut and plagued by corruption arguably worse than in Russia. Russia's transgressions have forced them to get their act together in terms of their military. Instead of facing a smaller, poorer and weaker version of the Russian army they found an army determined and battle hardened by years of fighting.

And the danger of Russian nuclear weapons getting into the hands of groups more hot-headed even than the Kremlin cannot be overemphasised. The Russians still have huge amounts of forces in the center of the conflict area, and some of them (Wagner group and others) are pretty nasty characters. They seem to be incompetently led at the higher levels, but they are still nasty characters to deal with. There is also still a huge amount of supplies and manpower to the south, not even counting Crimea. The southern offensive is currently trying to take less than a third of the southern area, and even if or when it succeeds, will have a hard slog getting across the river and retaking more land.

They are scrapping the barrel, taking basically everyone and offering large sums for short service. Either way, Putin had too few troops to start the war with, lost a lot, and have trouble to even replacing the losses. So we see troops that are fighting for 6 months and lose more and more their combat effectiveness. Worst of all you can't replace the better-trained troops, the lost officers and Russia never had an NCO like western troops. As usual, EU nations are grumbling about the costs of the war without acknowledging that Ukraine is shedding blood to keep the West safe. No matter what. Scholz and Macron say in public, they are hypocrites who have not stepped up to the plate to help Ukraine. All they want is to stay in power. For now, the only thing that scales (which also happens to be safer and greener) is nuclear.
We are in the current mess because Russia got such a huge war chest from selling gas to “green” Europe. We are in this mess because we were too scared to lose the Russian gas.

I don't know the exact scenario that would lead to that particular outcome, just like how you can't be certain of the scenario that you mentioned. What I questioned isn't the outcome I want, but I'd rather have our leaders be prepared for that contingency. If our leaders seriously considered the possibility that Russia would invade, they would have armed Ukraine, and provided other support much earlier, and that may have allowed Ukraine to defend itself without as much casualty it has had so far. All these military experts making predictions last year? Where were they when Russia began to move into Eastern Ukraine after Russia took Crimea?
Sure, it is good to hope for the best, but it is also important to consider the worst and be prepared for that contingency.
You just assumed that I am siding with Russia and trying to instigate some kind of an argument with you, just because I mentioned a possibility contrary to what you believe. For the record, I am NOT. I wish this war had not even occurred in the first place, and if our leaders weren't as shortsighted and as self-assured, they might have been able to take measures to prevent it.
Hardly anyone care what could have been done to prevent the war or what could have been done to at least reduce the deaths and destruction, people only care about winning and wanting to see Russia lose and collapse.
I am tired of arguing with people who in their fervent support for Ukraine pick a fight with anyone that question their belief. I am not picking a fight with anyone, I am only leaving my comments in hopes that people would think more about prevention of future wars, not taking sides once it occurs.

2nd rule of combat... Momentum can ALWAYS be reversed. One battle, no matter how well planned or executed has ever won a war. I would have thought a
former "general" officer would know that. Not saying Ukraine can't or won't win, just it is FAR from decided right now. 6 months ago these same "experts"
had written Ukraine off, i am SURE they are just a wrong about this now. Way to many people getting carried away with one single victory.
To quote Churchill, "This is not the beginning of the end but perhaps it is the end of the beginning." Mark my words, this fight is far from over.

Based on the pace of missile attacks, cruise missiles, etc.... Russia has literally blown thru their reserves. Ramping up the Defense Industrial Base takes significant time, Mobilization and actual training takes time as well..... and as the Starks say..."Winter is Coming". Ukraine's motivation and morale has to be thru the roof right now. Any mobilization or production ramp up by Russia is way too late. I look forward to vacationing in Crimea some day!

What is important to the US is getting Russia to be a democratic nation. If Russian SSRs do not remain as one, the US has security needs in far eastern Russia. The US does not want China to expand to the North Pacific. It important to help Japan get back their islands. It’s also important to the US that Kamchatka is not Chinese. The US may have to intervene to keep this area independent IF it is not part of Russia.

Belarus should still be a concern. Its seems that Lukashenko has gotten cold feet over the last 6 moths but Russia can still send troops through there into Ukraine. If anything to pull Ukrainian troops away from the fights around Kershon , Kharkiv and by extention the Dombas. I really don't think Putin has enough quality troops to pull anything off. They seem to be as bad as the Iraqis were. His last gambit is the winter and freezing out the EU with lack of natural gas but I think Europe as a hole are going to be prepared for it.. My worry is that if Putin really is sick with a terminal illness he may choose to use low yield tactical nukes. I'd hope that the Russians themselves would take care of him before it got that far.
