  • Wired2fish sat down with pro bass angler Keith Combs for a rundown on his go-to crankbait setup, ranging from the rod, reel, and line, with a discussion on critical attributes of each.

    • Seaguar InvizX Fluorocarbon Line, 12- to 17-pound: wired2.fish/Se...
    He starts on the importance of a good reel, which needs to deliver long casts for crankbaits (especially deep divers) to reach their maximum dive potential. In addition to a conventional Curado 200, he uses a Curado DC (Digital Control) when casting light crankbaits into the wind.
    He prefers longer glass crankbait rods with a moderate taper (tip to butt flex) for castability and keeping bass hooked. Fiberglass loads superbly on the backcast -- this stored energy supports making precise short casts, and bomber distance casts alike. And the flex is excellent at moving with the fish to reducer tearing out hooks.
    Lastly, Combs uses a 15-pound fluorocarbon for the majority of this cranking. He'll drop down to a 12-pound test for light baits and up to 17-pound for the biggest deep divers.

    A scorpion mgl imported from japan is a tiny bit more expensive then a 200k, but with the mgl spool, is a lot more controlled on the casting, and it's exactly the same reel, just with a different color scheme, and bushings instead of bearings in the handle shaft. After getting a scorpion mgl, i liked it so much, i spent the money to import a scorpion mgl replacement spool to swap in on my curado k.

    Don’t sleep on the 7’ medium glass. It’s pretty sweet for square bills

    Nice info...I was wondering what pound test florocabon leader i should go with on 20 pound braid??..its for my soft plastics and I just walk the bank around neighborhood ponds...thanks for the always informative content👍

      Rule of thumb is to have your leader lighter than your main line. But tbh 20 pound braid is so thin that the leader might be more visible and have more water presence than your braid. Check out some gray and black colored braid and you’ll be fine, especially in ponds

      You don’t even need a leader, if it’s super clear go with 15-17 but 20 braid is good

    Is it a MH moderate glass rod?

    i'm not experienced with deep diving crankbaits but considering gearing up to go for it mainly in the 6xd size depth . Seems in all my reading and videos (aside from this one) everyone experienced with this deep cranking urges longer rods primarily for increasing the casting distance to maximize time and coverage at the bottom/ strike zone . You mention this in your video, moving up to that 7'11/8'0 length with the 10xd, as if the 7'2 was fine for the 6xd and 8xd?? I'm interested in how much distance you think you may be sacrificing to fish the shorter rod? I do see that the recommended lure weights and lines size range is identical between the two MH rods.

    Hi. I don't understand what better: full spool of fluor or braid with fluor leader ( how long)?

    • @samh7805
      @samh7805 Před 4 měsíci

      all depends on your preference. Having leader always gives you a higher chance of losing a fish because you have an extra knot that can break. What braid with fluoro leader provides is that extra castability, as well as being able to use heavier fluoro than what is possible for your reel. If you use a baitcaster, tie straight full spool of fluoro. If spinning, go braid with the leader because having a full spool of any fluoro over 8-10 pounds will be a horrible experience with spinning gear.

      Care to explain? Because as a new’ish angler, it’s my understanding that manufacturers have a slightly different rating for their power and action. So a mh can feel like a m from two different companies. Also mh glass is different than mh carbon. Length and line also plays a huge part too.

    • @GwenStefaniGuild
      @GwenStefaniGuild Před rokem

      Medium heavy is perfect for cranking, especially when it’s a moderate action. I like the 7’6” zodias medium heavy myself, I use it for all my baits that dive over 15ft. I use a 6’10” medium Expride rod for smaller cranks, lipless, jerkbaits, square bills

      @@GwenStefaniGuild does anyone know how well the 7'2 glass can handle the deep diving cranks like the 5xd and 6xd. I have a buddy who gave me the older 7'2 glass with a mod. -fast action but haven't yet tried it out. I'm sure the 6xd would fish with less body strain on the 7'6 than a 7'2, not to mention a longer cast with the longer rod.
