Fantastic advice, thanks Mark and Megan! One thing I will add is that 3rd party websites are not comprehensive directories. The best of the best are often not on there because they don't need to be!

Oh can I add something? I love the idea of checking with your concierge at a hotel. As a hotel guy I want to add that if you aren’t staying in a hotel that has a concierge. You can walk into that swanky high end hotel and go up to the concierge and ask (even if you aren’t a guest ). If they aren’t busy with another guest, I bet they can help with recommendations and even book your tour. Just don’t forget to give them a tip :). The concierge is going to be the best in class hospitality person

Just be aware that the concierges are getting a cut of the ticket price, just like Viator and Get Your Guide. Plus, they are much more likely to recommend a tour that they get a commission on rather than a tour that they don't.

      @@CaptainPicardy great point!
but if you are at a loss for finding someone at the last minute. they usually don't steer people wrong.. I have actually had good experiences.. in San Francisco the concierge at the Intercon, got my family a tour with one other family in a nice comfy van for the same price as the big ole bus tour

Thanks, booked a tour yesterday, for when I'm in Rome, via Viator...checked the tour operator that they book for, googled them, and found out it was $10 cheaper to book the excursion directly via the company, cancelled the original booking and rebooked with the tour company directly, assuming Viator takes 30% of booking price it's win/win for company and customer...very useful indeed!

Using a Local Guide is something that Harriet and I take advantage of when traveling to places that we know little about. It's always a good thing to support the local economy .
Word of mouth . hotel recommendations, and you Mark help to find the right guide for you. A great subject to continue to explore. Thank you, Mark, 👍👍 Jim , Harriet and Yuki

I love using guides. In some cities, I have gotten tours through Viator or the like and if I liked the guide, I would ask them if they would be interested in providing a private tour. They always say yes and I find that these are the best tours. In NYC recently, I had the sublime pleasure of taking a tour with Megan, which is the first time I have booked a private tour directly. She did a great job and provided a really interesting tour. She has a vast knowledge about NYC and is able, on the spot, to personalize the tour to cater to your interests. It was a wonderful, free-flowing conversation that was a very enjoyable experience. I highly recommend her services.
She also offers discounts if you have a corgi and you bring it along or if you share pictures of it (just kidding).

I've taken Viatour (Rome to Pompeii) and Free Tours by Foot (London free walking tour), and both have been excellent. For solo female travelers, be wary of booking with a guide ... just general security advice. Also, be sure that a local guide is "certified." In my local city, for example, there are multiple local guides who are long on promises and short on actual knowledge ... generally, they rip off their clients.

I wonder if local universities have any resources. Like, maybe the Music Dept. At University of Vienna can steer you to great composer tours that cater to music and history nerds and have knowledgeable guides who won't just repeat the common myths.

So if you book directly with the guide vs the search engine, will the guide give you part of the 30% that they save?

Going through a third-party company offers some protection against payment and other types of fraud. Those companies also offer exposure and booking services that the operators don’t have to pay for. If you can find a reputable guide directly, that’s great, but it’s not entirely fair to frame the booking sites as a rip off or somehow less ethical. (Not incidentally, squeezing them out helps guides who have a heavy media presence and so are easy to find, but may not be as good.)

What should happen is that the police arrest the guide and take your testimony, then there is a trial and the guide is sentenced to some appropriate punishment
