Why is Guyana Hindu?

Hinduism, especially Ramayana and Bhagavada Gita, helped the Indian indentured laborers survive in Guyana for 175 years of extreme hardship. This illustrates the positive role of collective identity in security a community’s self-esteem and survival. Good leaders stuck their necks out over many generations and resisted pressures and inducements to sell out. This courageous leadership helped the Hindu community’s preservation of rituals/festivals as a method of collective survival and engagement with the mainstream. Guyana offers important lessons for USA leaders who sell out their Hindu identity to get ahead in public life.

And when Rohan Kanhai hit Sarfaraz Nawaz for 28 runs in one over in the same World Cup, I wished to God that he should be in India's team; where our little master Gavaskar just did not understand the meaning of One Day cricket. It was only in 1978 that I came to know that Rohan Kanhai is a Hindu and that the British took Indians (Hindus and Muslims) as slaves to Guyana to work on the sugar plantations.

Vikram Razdan.. Hi Vic. They were not taken as slaves By The British to West Indies ,Fiji ,Mauritius . They were given false promises and fooled. They were told that these lands had huge "GOLD Nuggets" lying along the road sides. It's A land of Milk and Honey and they could earn huge monnies and send back home etc etc.
Once there they were virtually enslaved. They were brought under Agreements. Indentured Laborers. But the Agreements were made with subsidiary Co's that The British Died out to avoid legal Actions Against the British.

There are two main reasons why conversions happen. One is when we don’t know about ourselves and the second is when we don’t know about the one who is trying to convert us. If we fix these two things I am definitely sure that we will be successful in not getting duped by mischievous people from abrahamic faiths.

In the year 1981, I got a chance to go to Gyuana. I was working with Merchant Navy, and our ship landed at the seaport of Georgetown. Our ship was to load raw sugar from there to France. To my surprise, I noticed Hindi songs being played on radio. First of all, I thought that device could be a tape-record, but it was a radio. I asked that gentleman how is he getting those songs from the other end of the world. He told me that there was a radio station in Surinam, and people there speak Hindi. When I settled in the United States, I met many of the people from Guyana, Trinidad. India was under the british rule, and they brought the Indians to work for them in different countries, like South Africa, West Indies, and Fiji. People of Indian origin still speak Hindi. When Panama Canal was built, so many Indians worked there. In New York City, I visited the Shiva Temple, which was built I believe on 110th street north of Northern Blvd. in Queens. People from Trinidad and Tobago, and Guyana have built that temple. Most of them are very soft spoken. Indian people in all these countries have gained political powers, such as Prime Minister, President etc.

They celebrated Diwali as an auspicious day, but with a service from the pastor. In Indonesia, Hindus were converted to Islam by the Arab traders in 16-17th century; they still celebrate Dusshera with Ram Lila, but as a cultural event. Another really inspiring video,Rajivji! When Hindus in Guyana have worked so hard to preserve and remain connected to their Dharma & Cultural heritage,it will definitely encourage Hindus back home here in Bharat as well as in US-Canada to connect to and take pride in celebrating their Hindu Cultural Heritage openly and assertively! 🙂🙏

I had visited George Town couple of times. And was proud to see Hindu religion being practiced halfway across the world.

Ram Ram. Wow your story is exactly the same. Our forefathers also did the same. Brought Ramayan Bhagwad Gita and Mahabharat. Still very much alive today. Not all Indians became Smith. Our people had sathsangh under trees. Then when allowed they bought land, built temples and schools their own homes etc. Today we still have Hindi Shiksha Sangh where we promote Hindi. We have daily sathsangh online because of covid. We observe all hindu festivals. Ramayan week. Gita week etc.We took part in the international Ramayan. Proud to be hindu. भारत माता always dear to us.
Thank you brothers and sisters of the diaspora.
    Thank you for this similarity.
Take care lots of love lfrom South Africa 🙏🙏🙏

Inspirational story. Here in South Africa we have a similar story. Though many families circumed to conversion out of ignorance, immense gratitude goes out to my parents and forefathers for keeping our traditions alive for us.
