I saw Insomnium live last saturday (after seeing Brymir, Battle Beast and Epica on the same day). I had not listened to them much previously, but must say their melodies are beautiful and I found their music somehow hypnotizing. I'm am certainly a new fan of theirs.

This song has everything I love in metal: Folk part, beautiful female voice, heavy riffs, brutal growls, tasteful solo, some acoustic parts, beautiful melodic part with growls and clean vocals and great lyrics. Am i missing something? Don’t think so, it has everything. So happy to be able to see them live in Barcelona in 2 weeks.

I discovered insomnium in 2014, when they opened for Epica during their concert to present their album The quantum enigma. From that moment Insomnium became one of my favorite bands too.

Insomnium is by far the best death melodic band un the world with the most consistent discography. They just don't have a bad album...so you have tons of songs to choose from. Try While We Sleep, Starless Paths, Twilight Trails, Pale Morning Star. Just to name a few :-)

Insomnia = Emotional roller coasters. They make you headbang and cry at the same time. They always combine beautiful atmosphere and melodies with extreme heavy guitar riffs and harsh vocals. Insomnium was formed in 1997 and their most famous songs are: While we sleep, Pale Morning Star, Heart Like A Grave, Down with the Sun, The Antagonist, The River, Winter's gate album. Guitarist Markus Vanhala is known as guitar god and main vocalist has incredible and well controlled harsh vocals and he can deliver different kind of emotions trough his vocals, so it is not just noise or shouting. The have archieved reputation of "epic melodeath band" long time ago, but yet many people have never heard of them. Their newest EP -> "Songs of the Dusk EP" is pure gold, but newer material is closer to Black Metal than Melodic Death Metal. This band belongs to my top 5 metal bands list for sure!!

Fun fact: Cartoon Metal band BELZEBUBS is at least 80 or 90 % all about Insomnium members. They have amazing music videos and music as well.. like "Cathedrals Of Mourning".

"With Anno 1696, Insomnium takes us into a world of sadness and the last crumbling remnants of hope, anger and morbid lullabies. This is a time of unrest. The witch-hunt is in full swing across Europe and horrific witch trials have even reached the remote and majestic landscapes of Finland and Sweden. Welcome to 1696. Welcome to hell."

If I've got it right, or anything that direction, one of the band members have studied history in real and he find a book from 1920's where is the story of this witch in Estonia, who wanted to live with the wolfs and her destiny in witch trials. Then he got an idea, that what if she escaped to finland to live among the wolfs. He wrote a book about this and this album and book follows this story simultaneusly. In my perspective absolutely fantastic idea and flourishing example what knowlidge and creativity can accomplish together.

@@0oma0 The book you might be talking about is
Aino Kallas' 1928 novel Sudenmorsian (the bride of the wolf) which was a major inspiration for this album. Wait a sec, I'll find more about it

@@0oma0 "The Story from Hiiumaa (an isle in Estonia) is a novel by the Finnish poet and writer Aino Kallas, published in 1928. Set in 17th-century Hiiumaa, it tells the story of Aalo, the wife of forest ranger Priidik, who is transformed into a werewolf by the influence of the Forest Spirit, Diabolus Sylvarum. The Wolf's Bride is written in Kallas's archaic, old-fashioned and ballad-like style"

    • @sateentuoksu

@@0oma0 and who was she... Aino Kallas was born and raised in Finland. Her work was tinged with sadness at the death of her father in a drowning accident when she was 10 years old.
Later she married the Estonian Oscar Kallas, moved to Estonia, and they had 5 children. At that time, she studied Estonian history and wrote texts against the oppression of Estonians.
Between 1916 and 1919, Aino had an extramarital love affair with Eino Leino, one of Finland's most prolific poets, which also influenced her writing style.

@@0oma0 could be much more, but I think this is the last pit of my flooding 😁 , as this closes the circle to where we began our journey 😁 and encloses the pieces we found:
Later, Oscar and Aino moved to London for Oscar's work. "To counterbalance London's demanding social life, the family found an island off the coast of Hiiumaa as a summer home, which provided an inspiring working environment for Aino Kallas. During these intense creative years, she developed an original, archaic style, which she used in her works Barbara von Tisenhusen (1923), Reig's Priest (1926) and Sudenmorsian (1928), based on old Hiiumaa and Livonian themes. These ballad-style novels, considered her best works, depict a passionate, unreconciled love that brings happiness and fulfilment but leads to death."
